Notes: An isothermal, steady-state, hot-strip rolling problem for rigid-plastic, strain rate sensitive and incompressible materials with coulomb-siebel friction contact conditions is considered. The corresponding penalty variational statement is given and a convergent finite element - secant-modulus method is presented. Two-dimensional example problems are solved and comparisons with the available experimental and numerical results are made. The influence of the friction coefficient on the contact velocities, stresses and equivalent strain rates is illustrated.

Notes: Abstract The structure of hadronic events fromZ 0 decay is studied by measuring event shape variables, factorial moments, and the energy flow distribution. The distributions, after correction for detector effects and initial and final state radiation, are compared with the predictions of different QCD Monte Carlo programs with optimized parameter values. These Monte Carlo programs use either the second order matrix element or the parton shower evolution for the perturbative QCD calculations and use the string, the cluster, or the independent fragmentation model for hadronization. Both parton shower andO(α 2 s matrix element based models with string fragmentation describe the data well. The predictions of the model based on parton shower and cluster fragmentation are also in good agreement with the data. The model with independent fragmentation gives a poor description of the energy flow distribution. The predicted energy evolutions for the mean values of thrust, sphericity, aplanarity, and charge multiplicity are compared with the data measured at different center-of-mass energies. The parton shower based models with string or cluster fragmentation are found to describe the energy dependences well while the model based on theO(α 2 s calculation fails to reproduce the energy dependences of these mean values.

Notes: Summary In submerged cultures of Claviceps sp. CP II, elymoclavine was synthesized only by the growing mycelium (phase P1), whereas cultures of C. purpurea strain 129 produced agroclavine after vegetative growth had also ceased (phase P2). In strain CP II, the peak of activity of malate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphatases was related to the time of maximum growth rate and alkaloid production. Citrate synthase activity paralleled the course of alkaloid synthesis. Strain 129 exhibited a further activity peak of the same magnitude during phase P2. ATP levels in both cultures corresponded to the pattern of change in enzyme activities. Strain CP II contained roughly twice as much orthophosphate and ATP in its cells as strain 129 and exhibited higher average activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. It follows from these results that alkaloid synthesis requires the processes of primary metabolism, even when it occurs after active growth of the culture has ceased. Cultures producing alkaloids oxidized at C-8 exhibit higher glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, probably because of a higher NADPH consumption.

Notes: Summary The boundary and the finite element formulations for the equations of elasticity are presented and applied to the problem of propagation of transient SH-waves in dipping layers overlying a half-space. When the finite element formulation is used, appropriate boundary conditions are imposed on the additional boundary dividing the half-space into a finite and an infinite region. These conditions ensure the transmission of waves across this boundary. When the boundary element method is applied, it is necessary to satisfy the radiation conditions. Theoretical seismograms for the displacement on the surface of the half-space are presented. They show that, for a specific case, the agreement between the two methods is satisfactory. The results can be compared with those found by the exact method of generalized rays in order to check the validity of the finite and the boundary element methods for the specific problem studied in this paper.

Description / Table of Contents: Melt copolymerization of trioxane and styrene initiated by a complex from Al(C2H5)3 and BF3 was investigated. The influence of the concentrations of the components is determined. It is shown that the composition of the copolymer does not depend on the concentration of the catalyst. A probable mechanism of the process is offered.
