Notes: Summary Exogenous glucagon or epinephrine were infused into normal overnight fasted dogs to raise circulating hormone levels to concentrations within the physiologic range. Plasma levels of glycerol and free fatty acids remained unchanged during the glucagon infusion, but rose significantly during the administration of epinephrine. Plasma insulin in the systemic circulation remained unchanged during the glucagon infusion and increased slightly during the infusion of the catecholamine. The data suggest that in normal dogs glucagon in physiological amounts has no lipolytic effect. The importance of the sympathetic nervous system in regulating lipolysis in normal mammals is stressed.

Notes: Abstract Exposure of voltage-clamped frog skeletal muscle fibres to silver caused a maintained inward current which could be carried by Ca2+, Mg2+ or Na+. Inorganic Ca2+ channel blockers and dithiothreitol (SH reducing agent) diminished this current, but a Na+ channel blocker did not. Thus, silver activates the Ca2+ channel by acting on SH groups in a Ca2+ channel protein.

Notes: Abstract Background: We evaluated interval changes of the internal structure of renal angiomyolipomas in relation to the doubling time on computed tomography (CT). Methods: A retrospective review of 42 renal angiomyolipomas in 10 patients who had been followed up for more than 5 months with CT was performed. The doubling time of each tumor was estimated. We classified the internal structures of the tumors into five types, based on the fat component percentage. We compared changes between initial and follow-up CT, and the relationship with the doubling time was evaluated. Results: The fat component increased more than the soft tissue component in 15 tumors (36%). The soft tissue component increased more than the fat component in only one tumor, in which an intratumoral hemorrhage occurred during the follow-up period. Twenty-six tumors (62%) showed no change. Most tumors with relatively long doubling times did not show a change in their internal structures. Conclusion: The growth of renal angiomyolipoma is due mainly to an increase in its fat component. An increase in the soft tissue component suggests the development of an intratumoral hemorrhage. RID="" ID="" 〈E5〉Correspondence to:〈/E5〉 S. Yamamoto

Notes: Abstract The Ly-4.2 alloantigenic specificity has been described as a possible marker for B cells in the mouse, as, on testing by the lymphocytotoxicity method, there was a restricted distribution of this specificity on lymphocytes. Using the highly sensitive method of immunoelectron microscopy with a hybrid antibody, it was found that only 5.5% of cells in the thymus carried the Ly-4.2 specificity, compared with 55.7% in the spleen and 20.9% in lymph nodes. This distribution suggests that Ly-4.2 is present on B cells, and confirms other functional and population studies. However, by immunoelectron microscopy Ly-4.2 was also detected on a few macrophages in the thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes. As with other alloantigens, the location of Ly-4.2 was found in restricted areas of various sizes on the cells bearing this specificity.

Notes: Abstract  The amino acid sequences of the human terminal complement components show extensive structural similarity to each other. In this study the C8β and C9 cDNAs of Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, were cloned and analyzed. The derived deduced amino acid sequences of the two terminal components were homologous to those of humans, in that the sequences of both species contained LDL receptor, EGF precursor, and two thrombospondin domains. Japanese flounder C9 was found to have a second thrombospondin region in the C-terminus, similar to that reported for rainbow trout and pufferfish. Moreover, these two complement component cDNAs of Japanese flounder had partial similarity to human perforin. These findings show that Japanese flounder C8β and C9 have similar structures, which supports the hypothesis that the terminal complement genes originated from the same ancestral gene. Collectively, these features emphasize the strong similarity among the members of the terminal complement family.

Notes: Abstract. A 72-year-old man presented with a mediastinal mass on chest radiograph. Computed tomography and MR imaging showed that the mass consisted of both fatty and small nodular soft tissue components, highly suggestive of an extramedullary hematopoiesis or a myelolipoma. A CT-guided needle biopsy was next performed and confirmed the diagnosis. We discuss the CT and MR imaging appearances of this tumor and usefulness of a CT-guided needle biopsy to avoid surgery in asymptomatic patients.

Notes: Abstract Thrombocytopenia was observed in 10 (2.0%) of 486 children with Kawasaki disease. In nine of the ten, the minimal paltelet count of 94000±38000 (SD)/mm3 was seen on day 6.8±2.2 (SD) of illness and the platelet counts were elevated to the normal level in 1–2 weeks. Thrombocytopenia in the nine appeared to be caused via coagulation-mediated platelet consumption, while the remaining child was diagnosed as having idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. One of the two who had severe coagulation-mediated thrombocytopenia of less than 50000/mm3 developed coronary aneurysms persisting over 1 year.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to evaluate the high resolution magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) as pre-operative angiography for the detection of ruptured cerebral aneurysms. MRA was performed on 1.5 tesla system using the 3-dimensional time of flight (3D-TOF) method. The field of view was 16 cm or 20 cm and matrix size was 192×256 or 256×512. Twenty patients with ruptured cerebral aneurysms and 35 cases of non-ruptured aneurysms (incidental aneurysm) examined by both conventional angiography and MRA were included in this study. All the ruptured aneurysms were operated on based on the information obtained from conventional angiography and MRA. Aneurysms smaller than 3 mm in size were difficult to visualize on MRA. However, most ruptured aneurysms were clearly visualized because they were generally larger than 3 mm. The image quality of MRA was satisfactory for planning surgery. Screening for non-ruptured cerebral aneurysms using MRA is controversial. However, in ruptured aneurysms larger than 3 mm in size, MRA clearly revealed the aneurysm, and MRA findings were informative enough to plan surgery. It is concluded that this noninvasive examination can be selected as a first-choice examination especially in cases of ruptured aneurysm.
