Notes: Summary A sporadic case of lower motor neuron disease with Lewy body-like inclusions is presented. A woman of 69, 6 months before death, had a history of muscle weakness and atrophy of the four extremities. Neuropathological examination revealed neuronal loss and associated gliosis in the anterior horns of the whole spinal cord. The cytoplasm of some of the remaining neurons contained Lewy body-like inclusions, Bunina bodies, or both. Spheroids and cordlike thickenings of cell processes were also observed in the anterior horns. A few neurons showed argentophilia of the cytoplasm. No tract degeneration was detectable in the white matter of the spinal cord. The present case and two reported similar cases may constitute a new subgroup of motor neuron disease.

Notes: Summary The spinal cords from seven autopsy cases of sporadic motor neuron disease (MND) and two controls were immunohistochemically examined using anti-bodies directed to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and to neurofilament proteins (Nf). CGRP immunoreactivity was observed in the posterior horns, especially in the laminae I and II, of all the spinal cords examined. In MND cases in addition, a considerable number of spheroids in the anterior horns were labelled with the antibody. In some spheroids, their entire area was homogeneously immunostained, whereas in others the immunoreactivity was confined to a focal area(s) within the profile of the spheroids and between these two forms of staining several variations of the staining patterns were seen. The anti-Nf intensely and homogeneously labelled all spheroids and there was no appreciable difference in the Nf-immunoreactive pattern, between CGRP-posittive and-negative spheroids. It is possible that the accumulation of CGRP in spheroids may result from entrapment of CGRP during the anterograde axonal transport causing loss of CGRP at the neuromuscular junction and producing weakness and atrophy of the muscles.

Notes: Abstract Chromitite xenoliths from the Takashima alkali basalt in the Southwest Japan arc are classified into two types: Type 1 chromitite in thin layers in dunite or wehrlite xenoliths; and Type 2 chromitite in discrete xenoliths which has an orbicular texture, previously documented only from podiform chromitites in ophiolites. Type 1 may be equivalent to layered chromitites in ophiolitic cumulates and Type 2 to podiform chromitites in the transition zone of ophiolites. This example of podiform chromitite from the Southwest Japan arc suggest that these podiform chromitites may exist in the upper mantle beneath an arc, where their formation is favored.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism of isotope scrambling was studied for infrared multiphoton dissociation of trifluoromethane-h (CHF3) and-d (CDF3) mixtures by a CO2 TEA laser. The CO2 laser was tuned to the R(14) line of the 001–100 transition, where CDF3 absorbs the light selectively. Although the highly selective decomposition of CDF3 occurred at low partial pressures of CDF3, significant decomposition of CHF3 was also observed with increasing pressure of CDF3. The selectivity (s) was found to depend only on the pressure of CDF3, a resonant molecule, but not on that of CHF3, an off-resonant molecule. The mechanism involving the formation of two kinds of vibrationally excited molecules, unimolecular decomposition (rate constantk 2 ),V-V energy transfer (k 3b), and collisional deactivation leads to the simple relationship,s=1+(k 2 /k 3b)/[CDF3], which can explain qualitatively the observed results. The ratiok 2 /k 3b has values of 20–200 Torr, probably depending on experimental conditions.

Notes: Abstract Carbon-13 isotope selectivities and specific decomposition yields in the infrared multiple-photon decomposition of CHF3 and CDF3 were examined as a function of wave number using a CO2 TEA laser. The observed maximum selectivities were 30 for CHF3 and 55 for CDF3. The specific decomposition yields in CDF3 were considerably larger than those in CHF3.

Notes: Abstract Difluoromethane CH2F2 containing 90–98% 13C was obtained in the selective IRMPD of mixtures of CBr2F2/HI, CCl2F2/HI, and CBrClF2/HI. In CBr2F2/HI mixtures, the intermediate product CHBrF2 resulting from the reaction between the initial decomposition fragment CBrF2 and HI underwent secondary selective IRMPD to form highly 13C-enriched CH2F2 in continuous laser irradiation. The intermediate product in the mixtures of CCl2F2/HI and CBrClF2/HI was found to be CHClF2, but no significant secondary photodecomposition in CBrClF2/HI mixtures occurred owing to the low absorption cross section of CHClF2 at the adopted laser frequencies and fluences. The observed decomposition probabilities and selectivities under different conditions with respect to laser frequency, fluence, and partial pressures of halogenated difluoromethanes and HI suggest that CBr2F2 is one of the better candidates for practical 13C separation by IRMPD.

Notes: Abstract The infrared multiple-photon single-frequency decomposition (IRMPD) of CBrClF2 was examined as functions of laser wavenumber, laser fluence, and partial pressure of CBrClF2. The initial step was the scission of a C-Br bond. In the presence of O2 the carbon-containing product was CF2O and its subsequent hydrolysis gave CO2. The initial dissociation was highly 13C selective at wavenumbers below 1014 cm−1. CBrClF2 decomposed at relatively low fluences as compared to CHClF2. However, the decomposition yield rapidly decreased with increasing pressure. In the large-scale irradiation experiment using about 8 J pulse at 1 Hz, we obtained a carbon yield of 0.41 μmol per pulse at a 13C-atom fraction of 17% for a mixture of 10 Torr CBrClF2 and 10 Torr O2, and a carbon yield of 0.17 μmol per pulse at a fraction of 29% for a mixture of 20 Torr CBrClF2 and 20 Torr O2. The IRMPD of CHClF2 gave a carbon yield of 0.18 μmol per pulse at 48% for 10 Torr neat CHClF2 and yield of 0.25 μmol at 52% for 20 Torr CHClF2. The large-scale irradiation experiment was also carried out for mixtures of CBr2F2 and O2. CHClF2 is the most productive of 13C.

Notes: Photodissociation processes of the doubly excited states of H2 into H(2p)+H(2p) have been studied using a coincidence detection of two Lyman-α photons. Coincidence spectra have been measured in the energy region of 29.0–36.0 eV. The intensity of the observed coincidence peak corresponding to two Lyman-α photons increases with increasing energy from its threshold which is about 29 eV. The main precursor of the two H(2p) atoms is assigned to the doubly excited Q2 1Πu state.
