    Notes: The vertical distribution of magnetotactic bacteria along various physico-chemical gradients in freshwater microcosms was analyzed by a combined approach of viable cell counts, 16S rRNA gene analysis, microsensor profiling and biogeochemical methods. The occurrence of magnetotactic bacteria was restricted to a narrow sediment layer overlapping or closely below the maximum oxygen and nitrate penetration depth. Different species showed different preferences within vertical gradients, but the largest proportion (63–98%) of magnetotactic bacteria was detected within the suboxic zone. In one microcosm the community of magnetotactic bacteria was dominated by one species of a coccoid “Alphaproteobacterium”, as detected by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis in sediment horizons from 1 to 10 mm depth. Maximum numbers of magnetotactic bacteria were up to 1.5 × 107 cells/cm3, which corresponded to 1% of the total cell number in the upper sediment layer. The occurrence of magnetotactic bacteria coincided with the availability of significant amounts (6–60 μM) of soluble Fe(II), and in one sample with hydrogen sulfide (up to 40 μM). Although various trends were clearly observed, a strict correlation between the distribution of magnetotactic bacteria and individual geochemical parameters was absent. This is discussed in terms of metabolic adaptation of various strains of magnetotactic bacteria to stratified sediments and diversity of the magnetotactic bacterial communities.

    Notes: The fates of the two different sulfur atoms of the thiosulfate molecule during anaerobic disproportionation by the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans were followed by isotope mass spectrometry. During disproportionation, 32S-thiosulfate was preferentially metabolized, and the residual thiosulfate became enriched in 34S. The sulfate formed was isotopically heavier than the inner sulfur of the consumed thiosulfate. Vice versa, the sulfide formed was isotopically lighter than the outer sulfur of the consumed thiosulfate. These results indicate that thiosulfate is cleaved to intermediates that undergo further disproportionation to sulfate and sulfide in a second step. These intermediates are probably elemental sulfur and sulfite. It is concluded that disproportionation of thiosulfate, sulfite and elemental sulfur includes a combined pathway.

    Notes: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most common cause of mortality and morbidity in adults under 40 years of age in industrialized countries. Worldwide the incidence is increasing, about 9.5 million people are hospitalized per year due to TBI, and the death rate is estimated to be more than one million people per year. Recently BAY 38–7271 has been characterized as a structurally novel, selective and highly potent cannabinoid CB1/CB2 receptor agonist in vitro and in vivo with pronounced neuroprotective efficacy in a rat traumatic brain injury model, showing a therapeutic window of at least 5 h. Furthermore, neuroprotective efficacy was also found in models of transient and permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery and brain edema models as well. In this article we review the in vitro and in vivo pharmacology of BAY 38–7271, the results from acute and subacute toxicity studies, pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism in animals and healthy male volunteers. In phase I studies BAY 38–7271 was safe and well tolerated when administered by i.v. infusion for either 1 or 24 h.As the doses of BAY 38–7271 in animals needed for maximal neuroprotective efficacy were significantly lower than those inducing typical cannabinoid-like side effects, it is to be expected that the compound will offer a novel therapeutic approach with a favorable therapeutic window for the treatment of TBI or cerebral ischemia.

    Notes: Abstract Sulphur isotope compositions and S/C ratios of organic matter were analysed in detail by combustion-isotope ratio monitoring mass spectrometry (C-irmMS) in eastern Mediterranean sediments containing three sapropels of different ages and with different organic carbon contents (sapropel S1 in core UM26, formed from 5–9 ka ago with a maximum organic carbon content of 2.3 wt%; sapropel 967 from ODP Site 160-967C, with an age of 1.8 Ma and a maximum organic carbon content of 7.4 wt%; and sapropel 969 from ODP Site 160-969E, with an age of 2.9 Ma and a maximum organic carbon content of 23.5 wt%). Sulphur isotopic compositions (δ34S) of the organic matter ranged from -29.5 to +15.8‰ and the atomic S/C ratio was 0.005 to 0.038. The organic sulphur in the sediments is a mixture of sulphur derived from (1) incorporation of 34S-depleted inorganic reduced sulphur produced by dissimilatory microbial sulphate reduction; and (2) biosynthetic sulphur with an isotopic signature close to seawater sulphate. The calculated biosynthetic fraction of organic sulphur in non-sapropelic sediments ranges from 68–87%. The biosynthetic fraction of the organic sulphur of the sapropels (60–22%) decreases with increasing organic carbon content of the sapropels. We propose that uptake of reduced sulphur into organic matter predominantly took place within sapropels where pyrite formation was iron-limited and thus an excess of dissolved sulphide was present for certain periods of time. Simultaneously, sulphide escaped into the bottom water and into sediments below the sapropels where pyrite formation occurred.
