Notes: A method of analysing the X-ray diagrams of imperfect membrane lattices with degrees of stacking disorder between 2 and 6% is presented. The method is, however, generally applicable to partially disordered lattices of centrosymmetric membranes. This can also be extended to the case of asymmetric membranes occurring in one orientation only, or in pairs, back-to-back. The procedure allows the determination of the statistical quantities characteristic of the partially disordered lattices and the separation of the diffuse scattering component. As a direct consequence, the refinement of membrane electron density projections becomes feasible and an example is presented for erythrocyte membrane lattices. A one-dimensional model of the refined electron density profile of the erythrocyte membrane is used to calculate numerically the X-ray scattering for a partially disordered lattice of N membrane units. A residual of 15% is obtained with this model and the difference between the observed and calculated values can be minimized further with the proposed refinement procedure.

Notes: Water binding has a significant influence on the rheological properties of wheat flour suspensions. Wheat flour-water suspensions at concentrations from 60 - 95% wet basis were subjected to rheological and NMR analyses in order to ascertain the relation between the two methods. The rheological data obtained by the Haake RV-3 Rotoviscometer followed the Power Law, thus comparisons were based on consistency coefficient (a) and flow behavior (b) values. The NMR spectrometer measured oxygen-17 relaxation rates (34 MHz in water and in deuterium oxide) as an indication of water mobility. The data showed a general inverse relationship between consistency coefficient and water mobility. However, the data indicated three distinct regions, each showing a linear relation with water mobility decreasing as apparent viscosity increased.

Notes: Abstract The representation of biological systems by means of organismic supercategories, developed in previous papers (Bull. Math. Biophysics,30, 625–636;31, 59–71;32, 539–561), is further discussed. The different approaches to relational biology, developed by Rashevsky, Rosen and by Băianu and Marinescu, are compared with Qualitative Dynamics of Systems which was initiated by Henri Poincaré (1881). On the basis of this comparison some concrete result concerning dynamics of genetic system, development, fertilization, regeneration, analogies, and oncogenesis are derived.

Notes: Abstract A categorical framework for logical models of functional genetic systems is proposed. The logical models of genetic nets are shown to simulate non-linear systems withn-state components and allow for the generalization of previous logical models of neural nets. An algebraic formulation of variable ‘next-state functions’ is presented which can be used for the description of developmental processes.

Notes: Abstract The present paper is an attempt to outline an abstract unitary theory of systems. In the introduction some of the previous abstract representations of systems are discussed. Also a possible connection of abstract representations of systems with a general theory of measure is proposed. Then follow some necessary definitions and authors' proposals for an axiomatic theory of systems. Finally some concrete examples are analyzed in the light of the proposed theory.
