Notes: Summary A high affinity, low capacity 3,5,3′-triiodo-L-thyroinine (T3) specific binding was detected in the nuclei preparation from human corpus luteal nuclei by using an in vitro thyroid hormone binding assay. The bound hormone was effixciently separated from free hormone by the use of 40% polyetrhylene glycol. Under standardized assay conditions of pH 8.6 at 37°C and a 2-h incubation time, the binding in the corpus luteal nuclei was saturable with Kd 4.94×10−10 M with low maximum binding capacity (1.70 p. mol/mg DNA). Competitive binding studies with hormone analogues indicated that T3 binding to corups luteal nuclei is hormone-specific. Findings indicated a driect effect of thyroid hormone on the human corpus leteum.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-one mixed-ligand complexes of cobalt(II) and cobalt(III) have been screened for their antimicrobial, insect sterilizing and ovicidal activities. Three of these cobalt(III) complexes exhibit broad antimicrobial spectra, including against human bacterial pathogens, dermatophytes and plant pathogenic fungi, while one exhibits feeble activity against a human pathogenic bacterium. These results have been compared with the activity of the corresponding cobalt(II) complexes, which have been found to be inactive, while the free ligands show reduced activity compared with the cobalt(III) complexes. Change in biological activity induced by a particular complex appears to be dependent on the composition of the first co-ordination sphere. Two of these complexes showed 50% inhibition of the conidial germination ofHelminthosporium oryzae andAlternaria triticina. These results indicate their potential for use against human and plant pathogenic microbes. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of the cobalt(III) complexes were determined. Three of these cobalt(III) complexes have been tested for insect sterilizing and ovicidal activities onDysdercus koenigi F. Positive sterilizing and ovicidal actions of [Co(BSOP)(NH3)2]NO3 (where BSOP—H2 is the Schiff base derived from salicylaldehyde and orthophenylenediamine) were obtained. Possible mechanism(s) of all these activities are discussed qualitatively.

Notes: Abstract The results of spectrographic analysis of 500 bauxite samples from 25 deposits show that the distribution of Cr, V, Zr and Ga is completely randomised in accordance with the model of complex, polycyclic sequence of bauxite genesis, deduced by other workers on the basis of mineralogical and major element studies. The same process of residual weathering, which generates a systematic enrichment and fractionation of major insoluble elements causes a random dispersion, notwithstanding the overall enrichment, of the insoluble trace elements due to seasonal variations in pH and in direction of movement of the pore water.

Notes: Abstract Biosynthesis of alginic acid in presence of metabolic inhibitors by resting cells of mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa was studied. Among the inhibitors tested, arsenite exhibited very interesting results, while the others showed no remarkable-effect. Firstly, arsenite stopped alginate production from all the substrates during initial hours of incubation; secondly, degradation of newly synthesized alginates to smaller molecular weight fragments took place if it was added after a few hours of incubation with the substrate; and thirdly, uncontrolled synthesis of alginate started after several hours of inhibition. Presence of arsenite was needed for the initial inhibitory phase of alginate synthesis; but once the cells were capable of synthesizing alginate after initial hours of inhibition, arsenite may be omitted from the medium.

Notes: Abstract Phosphoglucose isomerase negative mutant of mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa accumulated relatively higher concentration of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (Fru-1,6-P2) when mannitol induced cells were incubated with this sugar alcohol. Also the toluene-treated cells of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase negative mutant of this organism produced Fru-1,6-P2 from fructose 6-phosphate in presence of ATP, but not from 6-phosphogluconate. The results together suggested the presence of an ATP-dependent fructose 6-phosphate kinase (EC 2.7.1.11) in mucoid P. aeruginosa.

Notes: A simple model for the free energy of mixing of compressible polymer blends is derived, based on the regular solution model. Its ability to predict phase behavior for weakly interacting polymer pairs using only the pure component properties of mass density, solubility parameter, and thermal expansion coefficient is illustrated for mixtures of polystyrene and poly(n-alkyl methacrylates) with n≤12. The model yields a clear explanation for the strong pressure effects observed in some of these systems, including the first reported baroplastic elastomer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have studied patients who have positive-patch test reactions to fragrance-allergic screening substances fragrance mix (FM) or Myroxylon pereirae resin (balsam of Peru) for immediate contact reactions to the standard FM, the constituents of the FM and Myroxylon pereirae resin. In the fragrance-positive subjects (n = 60), there were positive immediate contact reactions to Myroxylon pereirae resin in 56.6% and to FM in 11.6%. In a control group (n = 50) of eczematous, patch test-negative patients there were positive immediate reactions to Myroxylon pereirae resin in 58.0% subjects and to FM in 12.0%. The absence of a significant difference between the fragrance-allergic group and control group is in keeping with a non-immunological basis for the majority of the immediate reactions seen.
