Notes: Abstract This work considers the effect of the choice of finite element basis on the conditioning and iterative solution of the algebraic systems obtained using high degree finite elements (p-methods). This issue is fundamental to the performance ofp-methods and to the increased use of iterative solution techniques both for standard finite element analysis and also in adaptivep solutions. The central ideas also apply to high degree spectral methods (global expansion methods).

Notes: A p-type finite element scheme is introduced for the three-dimensional shallow water equations with a harmonic expansion in time. The wave continuity equation formulation is used which decouples the problem into a Helmholtz equation for surface elevation and a momentum equation for horizontal velocity. An exploration of the applicability of p methods to this form of the shallow water problem is presented, with a consideration of the problem of continuity errors. The convergence rates and relative computational efficiency between h- and p- type methods are compared with the use of three test cases representing various degrees of difficulty. A channel test case establishes convergence rates, a continental shelf test case examines a problem with accuracy difficulties at the shelf break, and a field-scale test case examines problems with highly irregular grids. For the irregular grids, adaptive h combined with uniform p refinement was necessary to retain high convergence rates. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: A two-dimensional p-type finite element scheme for distributed parallel computation of viscous flows is developed. The approach is based on an element-by-element implementation of the Biconjugate Gradient Stabilized 2 iterative method coupled with a recently developed class of block preconditioners. Critical to the overall parallel performance is the parallel solution of the imbedded bilinear preconditioner. Performance results are presented for the 2-D driven cavity incompressible viscous flow problem solved using incremental continuation in the Reynolds number on the Intel Touchstone Delta. These results are used to validate a run-time model. The run-time model is then used to examine the scaling properties of the method over a range of p and h.

Notes: A high performance implementation is presented for three kernel routines commonly found in element-byelement preconditioned conjugate gradient finite element codes. These routines include forming the element stiffness matrices and loading vectors, or in the case of a non-linear problem, element residual vectors; and routines for applying element matrix-vector products. The present study considers tensor product elements of arbitrary mapping in 2-D, although the generalization to triangular elements and serendipity elements is straightforward. The implementation presented is most appropriate for high p type finite element methods, where the element matrices are relatively large and dense. This results in a set of high performance kernels for superscalar architectures, which otherwise may be memory bandwidth limited. Performance studies are presented for a representative superscalar microprocessor, the Intel i860. As these types of microprocessors are at the heart of modern workstations as well as several parallel supercomputing systems, this work is relevant across a variety of platforms. The resulting kernels yield both high performance on a variety of sequential architectures as well as a high degree of code portability through the basic linear algebra subprograms mechanism.

Notes: A p-type finite-element scheme is introduced for Navier-Stokes problems in a fully coupled stream function/vorticity formulation. The resulting coupled non-linear system is solved using a Newton iteration with incremental continuation in the Reynold's number. A biconjugate gradient (BCG) scheme in an element-by-element setting is applied to solve the linearized system at each Newton iteration. Pseudo-element block preconditioners produce a practical PBCG method, even for ill-conditioned systems arising from high-p elements in the case of Stokes flow. The problem at higher Reynolds numbers further limits p.

Notes: A parallel element-by-element scheme is developed for finite-element solution of elliptic boundary-value problems. It is shown that, for a broad class of computational grids, the solution algorithm is totally parallelizable. Moreover, the conversion of an existing serial EBE code to a parallel code is seen to be quite simple. The method is implemented on the Alliant FX/8 and Sequent Balance parallel computers and ‘speedup’ performance studies are conducted for a representative elliptic PDE in two dimensions. The present procedure can be applied quite generally to other finite-element applications, and the associated programs can be modified in a straightforward way to implement the method.

Notes: Vector and parallel algorithms for finite-element analysis using the element-by-element (EBE) data structure are developed. The algorithms are based on the EBE approach in conjunction with gradient-type iterative solution. The essential idea is to exploit the independent dense local-element matrix-vector calculations and reconfigure them to take advantage of vector or parallel processing capabilities. The ideas also are well suited to finite-element adaptive refinement computations. Specific algorithmic details related to the implementations are given, together with results of speed-up performance studies conducted on the vector and parallel architectures. The basic vector and parallel versions of the matrix-vector product for the EBE scheme are very straightforward modifications of the EBE algorithm, requiring little coding change.
