    Notes: The synthesis of fluorescent nanocrystals is receiving a lot of attention for potential application in biological labeling as well as phosphors for field emission devices. Zinc sulphide doped with manganese (ZnS:Mn2+) is one of the most efficient electroluminescent phosphor displaying a wide emission band centred around 590 nm resulting from the intra-ionic transition in Mn2+ ions. We report a unique synthesis of zinc sulphide nanoparticles doped with manganese using a biocompatible passivating agent ‘chitosan’, with bright luminescence peaking at 590 nm. This high luminescence efficiency of the synthesized nanocrystals are ideal for quantum dot based bio-labeling applications. Synthesis of the nanoparticles was carried out by precipitation reaction in aqueous media of zinc acetate and sodium sulphide where manganese acetate was added as the dopant. The obtained nanoparticles were around 4 to 6 nm in size and were found to be stable for months of shelf life. The photoluminescence intensity did not degrade when the colloid was heated up to 65 oC for prolonged periods

    Notes: Abstract Using synaptosomes prepared from whole rat brain, the spontaneous, calcium-independent, and calcium-dependent release of glutamate and GABA was assessed. Time intervals of 1–30 seconds were studied. Spontaneous release of glutamate (but not GABA) was elevated by 10 μM NMDA or AMPA by thirty seconds. This stimulation was partially calcium-dependent. Calcium-dependent release induced by 30 mM KCl was biphasic, confirming previous findings. This release was stimulated at all time periods by the presence of 10 μM NMDA or AMPA in an antagonist-sensitive manner. These data suggest that glutamate and GABA are released from vesicular stores in rat synaptosomes and that some of this release is modulated by presynaptic glutamate receptors.

    Notes: Abstract With respect to on-line scheduling algorithms that must direct the service of sporadic task requests we quantify the benefit of clairvoyancy, i.e., the power of possessing knowledge of various task parameters of future events. Specifically, we consider the problem of preemptively sheduling sporadic task requests in both uni- and multi-processor environments. If a task request is successfuly scheduled to completion, a value equal to the task's execution time is obtained; otherwise no value is obtained. We prove that no on-line scheduling algorithm can guarantee a cumulative value greater than 1/4th the value obtainable by a clairvoyant scheduler; i.e., we prove a 1/4th upper bound on the competitive factor of on-line real-time schedulers. We present an online uniprocessor scheduling algorithm TD 1 that actually has a competitive factor of 1/4; this bound is thus shown to be tight. We further consider the effect of restricting the amount of overloading permitted (the loading factor), and quantify the relationship between the loading factor and the upper bound on the competitive factor. Other results of a similar nature deal with the effect of value densities (measuring the importance of type of a task). Generalizations to dual-processor on-line scheduling are also considered. For the dual-processor case, we prove an upper bound of 1/2 on the competitive factor. This bound is shown to be tight in the special case when all the tasks have the same density and zero laxity.

    Notes: Abstract Cobalt bis(oxalato)nickelate pentahydrate, Co[Ni(C2O4)2]5H2O and cadmium bis(oxalato)nickelate tetrahydrate, Cd[Ni(C2O4)2]4H2O have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, reflectance and IR spectral studies. Thermal decomposition studies (TG, DTG and DTA ) in air showed that both the compound of cobalt and cadmium produced the oxide, MNiOx (x=3 for M=Co; x=2 for M=Cd ) at 325 and 360°C respectively. DSC studies in nitrogen attributed only the mixture of both the metal at the end.

    Notes: Kinetic studies on the polymerization of n-butyl acrylate and n-octadecyl acrylate in toluene at 70°C with benzoyl peroxide as initiator are reported. High monomer orders of 1.55 and 1.75 were obtained for n-butyl and n-octadecyl acrylates, respectively. Though the initiator order in butyl acrylate polymerization was 0.5, the octadecyl acrylate polymerization showed less than square root initiator order. The activation energy for the polymerization of both the acrylates was determined. Autoacceleration was found even at low conversions. The autoacceleration was influenced by both monomer and initiator concentration. Molecular weight data was presented in support of the gel effect. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
