Notes: [Auszug] THE recent paper by Baillie et a/.1 resolves a number of long-standing problems in art-historical dendrochronology. One of the first uses of dendrochronology in the history of art dealt with paintings of the Dutch painter Philips Wouwerman who spent all his life in Amsterdam2'3. The panels were ...

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1. 2. An Fettsäuren enthält Kakaofett.

Notes: Summary Forelimb trajectory and the activity of eight muscles operating at the elbow, wrist and digit joints were compared during the contact placing reaction, during the swing phase of locomotion and during reactions induced by swing perturbations, to verify the hypothesis that common neural mechanisms are involved in these reactions. Both the patterns of muscle activation and forelimb kinetics during the placing reaction greatly differed from those during the swing phase of locomotion. Both similarities and differences have been found between the placing reaction and the reaction to swing perturbations. Similar latencies, patterns of muscle activation and trajectories have been found for elbow movements while considerable differences were seen in the movements of distal joints. Both reactions started with a backward and upward movement at the proximal joints which was accompanied by a locking at the elbow. At the distal joints, tactile stimuli evoked first a wrist ventroflexion during the placing reaction, whereas they induced wrist dorsiflexion to swing perturbations. A further difference between these two reactions appeared at the beginning of the extension which was highly passive during the reaction to swing perturbation and active during contact placing. These results suggest that some common, most likely spinal, reflexes are involved at the beginning of the two reactions while their extension phases are controlled in a different way.

Notes: Summary The endodermis of the needle in pine consists of a continuous sheath of parenchymatous cells in which the water transport can occur only through the cytoplasma or across the radial walls. Topochemical results have shown that the radial cell walls, in contrast to the tangential ones, contain lignin as well as other aromatic substances and consequently permit only a very limited permeability. The water transport in needles of pine without an epidermis is accompanied by a high temperature coefficient and a sensitivity towards inhibitors. On the basis of these results as well as the behaviour of needles after an abrupt break in transpiration and the fact that the plasma in the endodermis has a high permeability, it can be concluded that in the endodermis of the needle the water transport occurs mainly in the cytoplasm.

Notes: Summary A novel stable isotope labelling procedure for microbeam analysis was developed to monitor exchange and uptake of nutrients, primarily Mg, K and Ca, by root tips at the cellular level. Initially root samples were analysed from 2-year-old spruce trees, originating both from a nursery and from a polluted forest site, (1) for the cortex cell wall accessibility and nutrient binding properties, (2) for the influence of low pH and elevated aluminum concentrations on Ca binding to cortex cell walls, and (3) for long-range transport into the secondary xylem, proximal to the labelled root tip. In nursery control plants, Ca is localized mainly in the apoplast of the cortex. Exchange of Mg, K, Ca in the cell wall of the cortex and the primary xylem with label in incubation solutions is almost completed to equilibration within 30 min. In the secondary xylem we could detect Mg, K, and Ca from labelling solutions in minute amounts after 30 min, and as a major fraction after 48 h. This indicates that stable isotope labelling can be used to study both ion-exchange properties of the apoplast and long-range transport. Slight acidification of the labelling incubation media to pH 4.5 reduced Ca binding to the cortex cell walls slightly, but acidification to the extreme value of pH 2.3 reduced binding 41%. A combination of pH 4.5 and increased free aluminum reduced the binding by 83%. In a preliminary attempt to analyse the nutrient binding capability of the root-tip apoplast from pollution affected trees, we exposed fine roots of 2-year-old spruce from an acidified and polluted site showing typical low levels of Ca and Mg in the cortical cell walls to Ca-enriched media. Under these conditions the Ca content of cortex cell walls doubled upon incubation at pH 4.7, reaching 40% of the total binding capacity of our nursey control plants.

Notes: Summary Tangential latewood sections (60 μm) of Scots pine sapwood were differently treated with chlorite. The subsequently incubated two strains of Bacillus polymyxa caused a weight loss up to about 25%, including a loss of lignin of about 42%. UV-microspectrophotometry of 1 μm-cross-sections prepared from the cultured woody tissues demonstrated that bacteria caused neither quantitative nor qualitative changes of the remaining lignin. The lignin, which was dissociated from the pretreated woody cell wall by bacteria, could not be respired, suggesting that the lignin is a ‘ballast’ to these bacteria that inhibits the dissimilation of the carbohydrates in the wood.
