Notes: The in-plane structure of single-crystal samples of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 has been imaged at room temperature using a scanning tunneling microscope. Atomic-resolution surface images exhibit areas in which the structure has tetragonal symmetry (peak spacing 2.5±0.2 A(ring)) and regions in which the structure is distorted from tetragonal symmetry. The lattice spacing indicates that the observed structure corresponds to the in-plane thallium and oxygen positions. The observation of both sites also suggests that the Tl-O band makes a significant contribution to the density of states near the Fermi level. In addition, a weak one-dimensional superlattice (period 10±0.5 A(ring)) which shows short-range order has been observed.

Notes: Monitoring the reflectivity of optically thin Au films on the ends of multimode optical fibers during exposure to Hg vapor provides a new means of determining the nature and extent of chemisorption and reaction of Hg with Au. Upon Hg vapor exposure, a freshly deposited Au film shows an initial increase in reflectivity, followed after some time by a substantial reflectivity decrease. The initial reflectivity increase is a result of the chemisorption of Hg on the Au, augmenting the film's optical thickness. The subsequent reflectivity decrease, which is observed only for saturated or near-saturated Hg vapor concentrations (p/psat 〉0.1), is a consequence of amalgamation of the Au by the Hg. The amalgamation process, which begins at grain boundaries when multilayers of Hg exist on the surface of the Au, results in the formation of large voids in the Au film. Energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy shows the resulting amalgam to have the approximate composition Au2 Hg3. Reflectivity measurements have been made as functions of Hg partial pressure and of Au film thickness; models are presented which describe both behaviors. Detection of Hg vapor in the parts per 109 concentration range has been demonstrated, suggesting that this effect could be used to monitor Hg vapor concentrations at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration exposure limits.

Notes: Rapid thermal processing has been utilized to sinter and anneal phase-pure and CuO-rich YBa2Cu3O7 fibers and woven fibers formed by melt spinning a powder/polymer composite. The optimum temperature for sintering the powders varies for the stoichiometric (1025 °C) and 5% CuO-rich fibers (1000 °C), but in both cases the temperature window is extremely narrow (±25 °C). Typical processing consists of a rapid heating (250 °C/s) of the fibers to the sintering temperature in 1 atm of pure oxygen, holding at temperature for 1 s and cooling over a period of 2–3 min. The resulting fibers are orthorhombic YBa2Cu3O7 with large Meissner and shielding fractions, have zero resistance up to 92 K, critical-current densities in zero applied field to 1100 A/cm2 at 76 K, and show clean grain boundaries by transmission electron microscopy. Despite the short processing times, microstructural analysis shows considerable grain growth and evidence of metastable congruent melting of oxygen-rich YBa2Cu3O7.

Notes: Thin unoriented polycrystalline films in the Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O system were prepared by sequential electron beam evaporation of multiple Tl, Ca, Ba, and Cu layers and a two-stage anneal under controlled Tl and oxygen overpressures. These films show zero resistance as high as 97 K and transport critical current densities at 76 K up to 110 000 A/cm2 with typical values of 50 000 A/cm2. The critical currents exhibit a modest magnetic field dependence. Meissner effect data show an onset at 110 K and a superconducting fraction of 75%. Compositional and structural studies indicate that the films, although polyphase, are predominantly Tl2Ca1Ba2Cu2Oy. There is no evidence of other superconducting phases.

Notes: We have measured for the first time the temperature-dependent anisotropic resistivity of several Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3Ox single crystals. The resistivity ratio between the c axis and the a-b plane orientations in the best crystals is approximately 60 at room temperature. Resistivity data indicate substantial differences in both Tc and the transition width of nominal Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3Ox plates grown from two different melt compositions. A Tl-O and CuO-rich flux yielded approximately stoichiometric plates with sharp transitions beginning near 113 K, while a Tl-O-rich flux produced plates containing more Tl and less Ba with broad transitions starting near 103 K. These data demonstrate the extreme sensitivity of the superconductivity to cation site disorder in the Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O system.

Notes: Flux creep data are reported which clearly demonstrate a dramatic enhancement in the pinning potential for magnetic vortices (fluxoids) in a Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3Oy single crystal upon irradiation with 4.5 MeV protons. The creep rate is markedly reduced between 5 and 80 K, and the effective pinning potential is quadrupled from ≈100 to ≈400 meV at 20 K in a field of 50 mT. This stronger pinning enhances the magnetization hysteresis and hence the inferred low-field critical current density by a factor of 5 at 40 K.

Notes: The photoelectrolytic decomposition of water using various iron-titanium oxide semiconducting electrodes appears to be influenced by the details of the electrode crystal structure arrangements. The structures of Czochralski grown ilmenite, FeTiO3 (a = 5.087, c = 14.042 Å), and spinel Fe2TiO4 (a = 8.509 Å) have been reexamined and refined (R 〈 0.05) with Mo Kα intensity data. In ilmenite, the Fe and Ti atoms are ordered in alternating layers perpendicular to the c axis while, in spinel, the best agreement is found with disorder of the metal sites. This suggests a simple model based on the structural arrangement of chromophores which explains the photoresponse behavior of such electrode materials.
