Notes:
On the Structure of Cyclotrimeric 1,4-QuinonesAccording to a crystal structure analysis the quinone units of the anthraheptaphene derivative 1b are heavily deformed, due to steric interference. The central ring, however, is plain and shows only slightly alternating bond lengths. So in 2a, which is easier accessible, the central double bonds have retained in part their quinonoid properties: When boiling with piperidine, 2a reacts to 5a, which gives 8a and 9 on reductive acetylation. With sodium hydroxide, 2a forms the pentaphenediquinone 7a and further unidentified products.
