Notes: Summary Fragments ofLineus sanguineus were incubated in seawater, which contained different concentrations of actinomycin-D (1.9 μg/ml, 0.95 μg/ml and 0.48 μg/ml). After 4, 5, 6 and 10 days the regenerates were studied by histological and histochemical methods (glycogen, glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase and RNA). Corresponding to actinomycin-D concentration certain phases of regeneration are inhibited. The phases of proliferation are less sensitive to actinomycin-D than the phases of differentiation. If morphogenetic areas are inhibited, the normally demonstrable histochemical characteristics: accumulation of glycogen and later, the increase of G-6-P-DH activity and RNA concentration do not appear.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The reaction of satellite cells after the experimental infection with a neurotropic virus shows an enlargement of the nuclei of the satellite cells, an approach of the satellite cells to their ganglion cells, and a multiplication of the oligodendroglia. This reaction takes the same course in both chicks and chickens. Despite the possibility of re-isolating the virus from the brain, and the existence of a preencephalitic activation of the vessel wall, the reaction fails to show up when weak virulent strains of viruses are used. A highly virulent virus provoked a clear satellitosis in surviving animals only. However, no reaction could be observed in dead animals. The cytodynamic behavior of the satellite cells is quite similar after the experimental withdrawal of the nutrition, and after artificial coccidiosis. A stress induced by shaking until exhaustion (of the test animals) is just followed by lessening the distance, whereas no functionalswelling of nuclei and the multiplication of glial cells take place. The maturing of the satellite cell, dependent upon the age, was distinguished from these reactive alterations. It occurs mainly between the fourth and seventh week of life, and is characterized by the decrease in volume, by lessening the distance between satellite and ganglion cells, and by an augmentation of the glial index.

Notes: Abstract The direct reaction of seven pyridinium oximes with the nerve agents sarin, soman, and tabun was followed by a spectrophotometric method. The half-lives (t 1/2) of the oximes, the first- and second-order rate constants (k 1, k 2), and the maximal reaction velocity ( $\roundv $ max) were calculated according to changes in the absorbance of the zwitterion (betaine) peak. In all cases the reaction velocity of the nerve agents with any of the oximes was highest with tabun, followed by sarin and then soman. Comparing the reaction rates of three therapeutically used oximes with the same nerve agent, the highest rate was obtained for soman with obidoxime, for sarin with 2-PAM, and for tabun with HI 6. The maximal reaction velocities reveal that the detoxification of the nerve agents by direct reaction with oximes and the subsequent decomposition of the phosphonyl oxime in vivo do not substantially contribute to the therapeutic effect of these antidotes.

Notes: Abstract Building of vertical galleries (“runways”) by termites of the species Heterotermes indicola (Wasmann) is suppressed in the interior area of arrangements of plastic containers with equal groups of termites and takes place preferably at the periphery. This reaction is not induced by chemical, vibrational or thermal influences. Shielding separation by plates of glass, plastic foam or various metals demonstrated, that the influence on activity and directional behaviour is caused by fields produced by the termites. They are most probably alternating electric fields. These biofields act together or, if the direction of the gradients differs, in competition with a weak alternating magnetic field in the air-conditioned experimental room. The centrifugal reaction of the termites to the biofields which do not influence the feeding activity, induces gallery building at the periphery of the nesting area.

Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to evaluate whether intra-operative ultrasound (=IOUS) is a suitable tool to detect residual tumour tissue after gross total resection in supratentorial gliomas. During a period of 18 months 45 patients with supratentorial gliomas (38 high-grade and 9 low-grade, according to the WHO-grading system [42]) were operated on. A series of 78 biopsies was taken from the resection cavity under continuous sonographic control at the end of surgery. Gross total tumour resection was intended in 34 patients (=76%). The biopsy specimens were matched with the sonographic features at each biopsy site. The sonographic appearance of the resection margins were classified into 2 groups: (1) Irregular hyperechoic areas extending from the cavity into the iso-echogenic brain tissue and (2) a dense small (≤3 mm in diameter) rather regular hyperechoic rim surrounding the resection cavity. 47 out of 53 biopsies taken from hyperechoic areas (group 1) (36 high-grade/11 low-grade) revealed solid tumour tissue (=89%). 34 (=72%) of these 47 areas were microscopically assessed as inconspicuous by the surgeon. 6 samples (4 high-grade/2 low-grade) contained tumour infiltration zone. 25 biopsies (23 high-grade/2 low-grade) taken from the hyperechoic rim [group 2] were diagnosed as follows: Normal brain tissue in 11, tumour infiltration zone in 8 and solid tumour tissue in 6 cases. Of 34 cases with “gross total removal” according to the surgeon's assessement 25 showed sonographic signs of residual tumour tissue, which was confirmed histologically as solid tumour tissue in 22 of these cases. It is concluded, that IOUS following resection of supratentorial gliomas can detect residual tumour tissue with high specificity and thus improve gross total resection. However, a thin hyperechoic rim surrounding the resection cavity (less than 3 mm in diameter) is a non-specific finding, which can mask thin residual tumour layers and therefore needs further evaluation of its nature.

Notes: Summary ¶ Purpose. In this prospective study the results of multimodal postoperative neuro-imaging were related to the survival of patients with high grade gliomas.  Methods. All 73 patients included underwent microsurgical tumour resection and had postoperative CT and transcranial sonography (TCS) examinations. In addition, 35 of the 73 patients received an early postoperative MRI. Patients were followed up for at least one year.  Findings. At the end of the 7 year study period 56 patients had died. The median survival time was 371 days. Survival rate was significantly higher in patients with anaplastic astrocytomas and inpatients displaying complete tumour resection on MRI (log-rank-test, p〈0.05) or a small postoperative residual tumour bulk on TCS (log-rank-test, p〈0.05). Cox proportional hazards model identified histological tumour grade, postoperative Karnofsky index, complete resection based on MRI and small postoperative residual tumour mass on TCS as independent predictors of survival.  Interpretation. This study demonstrates that early postoperative neuro-imaging has prognostic implications for the survival of patients with high grade gliomas. According to our results postoperative imaging with MRI and TCS is a valuable prognostic with regard to patient survival and should therefore be implemented in postoperative follow-up. It also helps to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant therapy.
