Notes: Abstract. The objective of this study was to assess the reversibility of pulmonary lesions in Wegener's granulomatosis using serial CT. We reviewed the follow-up CT scans of ten treated patients with confirmed Wegener's granulomatosis. The delay between the first evaluation before treatment and the second, on patients in clinical and biological remission, ranged from 6 to 54 months (mean 20.5 months). Follow-up CT showed a decrease in the extent of disease in all cases. Lesions disappeared completely, without scarring, in 4 of 4 ground-glass opacities, 25 of 36 nodules, and 4 of 9 pulmonary consolidations; they disappeared with residual scarring in 8 of 8 masses, 3 of 9 pulmonary consolidations, and 2 of 36 nodules. The majority of lesions disappear without scarring. Residual fibrosis may follow the occurence of masses and pulmonary consolidation. Computed tomography permits assessment of cicatricial lesions.

Notes: A scanning X-ray interferometer system [Hart & Siddons (1981). Proc. R. Soc. London Ser. A, 376, 465-482] has been rebuilt for operation at the SERC Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS). The SRS permits an increase in energy resolution by one decade and simultaneously an intensity gain of one thousand times, though in practice the solid-state detector employed limited the peak intensity utilized so that experiments which hitherto demanded one month of counting time are now performed at higher spectral resolution in 2-4 h. Absolute measurements are reported of f' and f” for the K edges of most elements between 34Se and 26Fe and for L edges of 79Au and 74W over energy ranges of about ± 2 keV near absorption edges and scans with better than 1 eV energy resolution of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra near the edges. Over wide energy ranges the results are compared with the most recent calculations of Cromer & Liberman [Acta Cryst. (1981), A37, 267-268], which are now easily available to workers in the field.

Notes: Aims:  To compare correlations between different morphometrically assessed measurements of tumour microvasculature and to identify those which show closest correlation with Ki67 and to examine radial intratumoral distribution of microvessels and proliferation. Methods and results:  Immunohistochemically defined microvessels and Ki67+ cells were quantified in sequential fields of 0.12 mm2 (×600) in four transects in each of five tumours. The total number of vessels (TNV) correlated more closely with proliferative activity than the numbers of vessels with a discernible lumen (TLV) and TNV decreased towards the centre of the tumour whereas TLV did not. A higher proliferative index (PI) was found at the periphery of the tumours. Comparison between transects through subjectively identified microvessel hot-spots and non-hot-spot transects showed similar mean, median and peak vessel counts but showed a different distribution on χ2 analysis. Conclusions:  TNV correlates most closely with PI in breast carcinomas. There is marked variation in microvessel density and PI between fields of 0.12 mm2 but there is a significant radial reduction in both from the edge towards the centre of tumours.

Notes: Summary Semi-pilot scale production of citric acid was investigated with a gamma-ray induced mutant (HB3) of Aspergillus niger using 500, 1000 and 1500 ml medium in 51 fermentation jars. Yield of citric acid was found to be seven-fold higher compared to the parent in 1000 ml medium and the corresponding increase was two-fold in the 500 ml medium. With 1500 ml/fermentation jar the yield was low with both the parent and the mutant strain though the mutant gave higher yield compared to the parent.

Notes: Abstract In the present paper, the effects of free convection currents and the viscous dissipation on the unsteady flow of an electrically conducting and viscous incompressible fluid around an uniformly accelerated vertical porous plate subjected to a suction or injection velocity inversely proportional to the square root of time, in presence of a transverse magnetic field, have been investigated. Analytical solutions for the velocity and the temperature distributions, the skin-friction and the rate of heat transfer are obtained for small magnetic parameterM. During the course of discussion the effects of the Grashof number Gr, the Eckert number Ec, the suction/injection parametera have been considered for unit value of the Prandtl number Pr.

Notes: Abstract An exact analysis of the effects of mass transfer on the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past an uniformly accelerated vertical porous and non-porous plate has been presented on taking into account the free convection currents. The results are discussed with the effects of the Grashof number Gr, the modified Grashof number Sc, the Schmidt number Sc, and the suction parametera for Pr (the Prandtl number)=0.71 representating air at 20°C.
