    Notes: Theodorsen's method for calculating the incompressible potential flow past an aerofoil is viewed afresh. It is found that some simple modifications to the computational process make the computations relatively faster, easier and more accurate. The new modifications are applicable to the analysis of conventional aerofoils with up to moderate thickness and camber ratios. Several examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the modifications.

    Notes: An accurate numerical scheme has been devised to study the self-induced motion of an infinitely thin, free vortex sheet of finite span in an unbounded, inviscid, incompressible fluid. The new numerical scheme has been tested against two vortex sheet problems for which exact solutions have also been obtained. The agreement between the numerical and exact solutions is excellent. The scheme has been further tested against two more examples for which analytical solutions for small times were available. Here too the agreement is excellent.

    Notes: It is shown that mathematical programming (MP) finds useful application in wing theory. This is illustrated by posing wing theoretical problems as programming problems within the framework of the linearized lifting surface theory. A great merit of programming techniques is their ability to accommodate inequality constraints in a problem. This feature allows a wing theoretician to expand into a domain of practical problems where qualitative constraints can be included into his formulations. A few numerical examples involving the Prandtl lifting line equation with equality and inequality constraints are given to show that the method works. Its extension to complex wing-body problems poses no conceptual difficulties, but requires further numerical experimentation.
