Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'ostéomyélite vertébrale d'origine hématogène a été observée chez 160 malades (1960–1990).
Notes: Abstract Hematogenous osteomyelitis of the spine was diagnosed in 160 patients (1960–1990). The average age of the appearance of the first symptoms was 48 years. Pathogens were identified from local sample taking, hemocultures, histological proof, or other infections seats. Access way is in 82 cases known. Treated consisted of antibiotics. Surgery was performed to establish the diagnosis or to evacuate an abcess. Neurological complications, 29 cases, were treated with surgery and antibiotherapy; 21 had complete or subtotal resolution of their symptoms; but neurological symptoms persisted in 7. Primary antibiotherapy should be started promptly to avoid bone destructions or neurological complications. A correct diagnosis (differenciation between pyogenic infection, tumors, tuberculosis, arthrosis⋯) necessits tomographies, scanner, magnetic resonance imaging, punctures, aspiration, or open biopsy.

Notes: The H− negative ion thermal energy measured using the two-laser-pulse photodetachment technique is reported to be in the range from 0.1 to 0.7 eV for various conditions of volume ion source operation (pressure−from 2 to 7 mTorr, discharge current−from 1.5 to 20 A). The hydrogen pressure has a significant effect in lowering the negative ion temperature, while the increase of the discharge current leads to a rise in T−. It is found that T− is a fraction of the electron temperature, Te. This fraction is strongly dependent on the gas pressure. T− scales linearly with the electron temperature and exceeds the highest values predicted by the theory of dissociative attachment. The possible mechanisms for H− ion heating are discussed.

Notes: A new technique using laser induced photodetachment has been developed for measuring the negative ion temperature in H− and D− sources. Using this technique, we have investigated the dependence of the negative ion temperature on source parameters such as pressure, discharge current, and electron temperature. Simultaneous measurements of negative ion density, temperature, and extracted current lead to the conclusion that the extracted negative ion current is, at most, equal to the thermal flux.

Notes: Two different Lagrangian approaches for particle/particle collisions are described. The first model is based on the simultaneous tracking of several particles and suitable treatment is developed on particle pairs to detect collisions on each time step of the particle trajectory realization. The second method is based on a stochastic approach where one single particle is tracked, and successive random processes are applied to generate a fictitious partner of collision. In order to validate both approaches, simulations have been carried out in homogeneous isotropic turbulence and they have been compared with LES data. The particle/particle correlated motion through the surrounding fluid is proved to be a key parameter in a particle/particle collision process. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the results of simulating two multicusp volume negative ion sources in which plasma parameters, hydrogen vibrational spectra, and in one case the negative ion density, have been measured. We find generally good quantitative and qualitative agreement between experiment and theory for the basic discharge parameters. Good agreement is also found for atomic density, although the wall recombination coefficient γ(H) is 0.05 in one source and 0.5 in the other. The calculated densities of vibrationally excited states with v‘≥5 are higher than the measured densities, but the calculated negative ion densities are lower than available measurements. Possible causes for these discrepancies are suggested. Fundamental modifications to the model may be necessary, and we have discussed two possibilities: a suprathermal rotational spectrum, and a spatial gradient in vibrational excitation (due to elastic collisions which can localize the effect of vibrational wall cooling near the wall).

Notes: This article reports work in progress on laser diagnostics of negative-ion transport velocity in H−-ion volume sources. The plasma dynamics after the laser shot is discussed in detail, and the effect of the potential perturbation on the H− velocities is evaluated. A method of evaluation of the H− transport velocity from single-laser-beam photodetachment experiments is proposed. To substantiate this method, two-laser-beam photodetachment experiments have been effected. The velocities thus determined are pressure dependent; they correspond to H− energies in the range 0.23–0.08 eV.

Notes: A number of results for the Tchen theory of dispersion of discrete particles by continuous turbulent motion are recalled. A Frenkiel family of Lagrangian correlation functions is used and the main results are rewritten in nondimensional form. The theory is completed by a new relation expressing the mean square of the relative particle velocity. The validity of the Stokes contribution to the Tchen equation of motion is examined. Numerical results are given and discussed.
