Notes: Spitz's nevi are acquired benign melanocytic skin tumors. Usually they are differentiated from nodular melanoma by clinical and histopathological criteria. Since Spitz's nevi are one of the most common simulators of nodular melanomas their bizarre histopathology may cause diagnostic confusion and make it difficult to differentiate these two melanocytic tumors. One of the histologic features shared by Spitz's nevus and nodular melanoma is prominent vascularity. The ability of malignant melanoma to induce angiogenesis is well established whereas benign melanocytic tumors do not have a prominent overall vascularity. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the degree of vascularity of nodular melanomas differs significantly from that of benign Spitz's nevi.In this study the number of microvessels and the vessel area were determined in 23 Spitz's nevi and 16 nodular melanomas. The number of microvessels and the vessel area were determined on Ulex Europacus agglutinin I-stained sections by computer-assisted image analysis. Two methods of measurement were used, namely systematic and selective sampling. Measurement of the whole tumor specimen (systematic sampling) revealed a vessel count of 10.83/field (SD±5.97) for Spitz's nevi whereas nodular melanomas exhibited a significantly lower (p=0.04) vessel count of 6.44/field (SD±3.85). This difference was even more pronounced when the vessel area (Spitz's nevi: 17.85×10–4mm2, SD±10.32; nodular melanomas: 7.88×10-mm2, SD×5.23) was investigated (p 〈 0.001). The difference in vessel area and vessel count was insignificant for areas exhibiting the greatest vascularity (selective sampling). Measurement of vessel count and vessel area lead us to conclude that Spitz's nevi have a significantly higher vascularity than do nodular melanomas. Our results thus indicate that angiogenesis in these pigmented lesions is not correlated with malignancy.

Notes: Abstract This article considers the consequences of explicitly allowing for stochastic technological progress and stochastic labor input in the discrete-time Solow-Swan and AK growth models. It shows that the capital-output ratio, but not output per capita, is ergodic irrespective of whether there is a unit root in technology, and thus is the more appropriate measure to use in the cross-sectional analysis of the growth process. Furthermore, the article derives the cross-sectional and time-series implications of the stochastic Solow-Swan model and contrasts these to those of its deterministic counterpart. Among these implications are that the mean of the capital-output ratio depends in a precise way not only on the saving rate and the growth rate of labor input, but also on the variance and higher-order cumulants of the capital-output ratio. Using the Summers-Heston data for seventy-two countries from 1960 to 1992, strong support is found for the predictions of the stochastic Solow-Swan model as compared to those of its deterministic counterpart (as well as those of the AK model), including a significant negative cross-sectional relationship between the mean and the variance of the capital-output ratio.

Notes: Abstract Lymphedema of the arm is one of the most disabling and serious complications of breast cancer. Apart from tumor infiltration or fibrosis of lymphatic pathways, little is known about factors favoring the development of lymphedema. In the present study, we investigated the impact of rheologic parameters, e.g. red cell aggregation (EA) and plasma viscosity (PV), and of capillary morphology and capillary flow in patients with breast cancer with (n = 18) and without (n = 18) lymphedema. Patients with lymphedema showed a significant increase of red cell aggregation (p 〈 0.001) that indicates a systemic component of lymphedema and might offer a possibility of prevention and therapy of this condition. A hitherto unclassified protein factor favoring red cell aggregation and lymphedema might be postulated.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers the solution of nonlinear rationalexpectations models resulting from the optimality conditions of afinite-horizon intertemporal optimization problem satisfying Bellman'sprinciple of optimality (and possibly involving inequality constraints). Abackward recursive procedure is used to characterize and solve thetime-varying optimal decision rules generally associated with these models. At each stage of these backward recursions, either an analytical ornumerical solution of the optimality conditions is required. When ananalytical solution is not possible, a minimum weighted residual approach isused. The solution technique is illustrated using a life-cycle model ofconsumption under labor income and interest rate uncertainties (and possiblyinvolving liquidity constraints). Approximate numerical solutions areprovided and compared with certainty-equivalent solutions and, whenpossible, with exact solutions.

Notes: Surface properties of a number of commercial thermoplastic polymer films were investigated before and after brief exposures to RF induced, low temperature gas plasmas. Water wettability and adhesion of vapor deposited aluminum to thin films (8-12 micron) of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polysulfone, polycarbonate, and polyvinylidene fluoride films were studied before and after treatments with oxygen, 96% CF4/4% O2, and helium plasmas. Treatment with oxygen plasmas showed the greatest change in water wettability for polyvinylidene fluoride and polypropylene films, while treatment with 96% CF4/4% O2 showed dramatic changes in wettability of polycarbonate, polysulfone, and polystyrene. Excellent adhesion of aluminium was found for polymers that had been previously exposed to gas plasmas.

Notes: Two new cytochalasans, proxiphomin and protophomin have been isolated from cultures of a Phoma species (strain S 298). They are shown to possess the same skeleton as deoxaphomin (4), which has been isolated recently. Thus they represent lower states of oxidation of 4. On the basis of the spectral data, the structures 16-methyl-10-phenyl-[13]cytochalasa-6 (7), 13t,21t-triene-1,23-dione (1) and 16-methyl-10-phenyl-[13]cytochalasa-5 (6)13t,21t-triene-1,7,23-trione (2) are proposed for proxiphomin and protophomin respectively. On treatment with perchloric acid, substance 1 is isomerized to give 16-methyl-10-phenyl-10-pheny-10-phenyl-[13]cytochalasa-5(6)13t,21t-triene-1,23-dione (3). The assumption that the [13]cytochalasans are potential biogenetic precursors of the 24-oxa-[14]catochalasans is discussed.

Notes: The 13C-NMR. spectra of one natural and ten semi-synthetic cannabinoids were analyzed in detail. Assignments of the signals are based on their chemical shifts, splitting patterns in 1H-off-resonance decoupling experiments and comparison with 13C-NMR. data of related cannabinoids. With some compounds final assignments were made by selective 1H-decoupling experiments and incremental calculations.
