Three different scanning procedures that can be adopted to reproduce a uniform irradiation by a radiation field over a large detector, when the beam size is less than the monitor dimension, are discussed. These procedures are spot scanning, in which the scan is performed over a mesh of points; linear scanning, in which the instrument is moved continuously in front of the beam in the two transverse directions; and cross scanning, in which the scan is obtained according to a law yielding a "pseudo-Lissajous'' figure. An instrument which has been designed and built for the calibration of a neutron rem counter is described. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
