    Notes: We study the excitation of molecular rotation by microwave pulses of duration σ which occur periodically with frequency ω. We analyze the molecular dynamics both classically and quantum mechanically and consider situations where the coupling of the field to the molecule is strong. In both approaches, the angular momentum transmitted to the molecule is confined to a finite band of width ≈1/σ. But, while the classical dynamics displays chaotic features, the quantum treatment distinguishes clearly between two regimes. Resonance excitation occurs when ω is rationally related to the basic rotation frequency ω0. Off resonance (ω/ω0 irrational), the probability to transfer angular momentum to the molecule is small and the underlying mechanism for this effect is analogous to the Anderson model of localization in a one-dimensional random lattice with a finite number of sites. We show that the conditions required by our analysis can be achieved with, e.g., PbTe or CsI molecules and conventional field strengths and we propose this system as an experimental testing ground for the Anderson localization mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract A classification of quantum systems into three categories, type I, II and III, is proposed. The classification is based on the degree of sensitivity upon initial conditions, and the appearance of chaos. The quantum dynamics of type I systems is quasi periodic displaying no exponential sensitivity. They arise, e.g., as the quantized versions of classical chaotic systems. Type II systems are obtained when classical and quantum degrees of freedom are coupled. Such systems arise naturally in a dynamic extension of the first step of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, and are of particular importance to molecular and solid state physics. Type II systems can show exponential sensitivity in the quantum subsystem. Type III systems are fully quantized systems which show exponential sensitivity in the quantum dynamics. No example of a type III system is currently established. This paper presents a detailed discussion of a type II quantum chaotic system which models a coupled electronic-vibronic system. It is argued that type II systems are of importance for any field systems (not necessarily quantum) that couple to classical degrees of freedom.

    Notes: Abstract: We study the electronic structure of three-dimensional quantum dots using the Hartree-Fock approximation. The confining potential of the electrons in the quantum dot is assumed to be spatially isotropic and harmonic. For up to 40 interacting electrons the ground-state energies and ground-state wavefunctions are calculated at various interaction strengths. The quadrupole moments and electron densities in the quantum dot are computed. Hund's rule is confirmed and a shell structure is identified via the addition energies and the quadrupole moments. While most of the shell structure can be understood on the basis of the unperturbed non-interacting problem, the interplay of an avoided crossing and the Coulomb interaction results in an unexpected closed shell for 19 electrons.

    Notes: Abstract A quantum system which is allowed to interact with its boundary in a self-consistent way is shown to exhibit chaos. We conjecture that in general genuine wave chaos (decaying autocorrelation functions, exponential sensitivity of wavefunctions to initial wavefunction configurations) can be obtained whenever a wavefield is allowed to modify its confining boundaries in a self-consistent way. We suggest to test this conjecture in the acoustic regime.
