Notes: We review our work on two complementary and compatible techniques, namely direct laser writing and holographic lithography which are suitable for fabricating three-dimensional Photonic Crystal templates for the visible and near-infrared. The structures are characterized by electron micrographs and by optical spectroscopy, revealing their high optical quality

Notes: Summary The development of the semilunar valves of the great arteries of the mouse is studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. The earliest anlage of the valves is observed at day 11.5 of gestation, as three pairs of tubercles protruding towards the lumen of the truncus arteriosus. These early cusps consist of a core of mesenchymal tissue covered by the endocardium. From day 12.5 to 14 a process of excavation takes place in the arterial face of the cusps resulting in the achievement of their final shape. Our observations suggest that the excavation process is produced by a selective growth of the free edges of the cusps. Numerous pieces of evidence are reported suggesting that the selective growth of the cusps is due to an inductive interaction between the endocardium of the arterial face of the cusps and the underlying mesenchyme. The histogenesis of the cusps takes place very late in development and possibly continues into the postnatal period. The results are compared with studies made in other vertebrates.

Notes: Abstract. In this article, we describe the ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a littoral cell angioma of the spleen. This benign vascular neoplasm of the spleen has been described, but to our knowledge there has been no case published in the literature that describes its imaging features.

Notes: Abstract We tested the influence of limiting access to prey on larval development of the crabs Cancer magister and Hemigrapsus oregonensis by raising their Stage 1 larvae in the laboratory on different prey densities and with various periods of access to prey. Experiments were conducted in 1995 and 1996 at the Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes, Washington, USA. Our results show that crab larvae do not require continuous access to prey for optimal development nor do they appear to require light for prey capture. Survival and duration of Stage 1 C. magister fed continuously on only one-fourth the amount of the control density of prey and those fed at the control density for only 6 h per day were the same as for larvae fed continuously at the control density (20 ml−1). Larvae with cyclic access to prey at the control density for 24 h and then starved for 72 h showed significantly lower survival and longer instar duration to Stage 2. Experiments on Stage 1 H. oregonensis which investigated a combination of prey density, period of access to prey and light/dark conditions during feeding revealed that survival decreased with decreasing prey density or with decreasing feeding period, but no differences were observed during periods of limited prey availability as a function of light or dark conditions. Stage duration was not affected by reduced prey density nor by the light/dark condition at the time of feeding, but it was prolonged when the period of access to prey was limited. The period of access to prey did not affect the weight of Day 1 Stage 2 larvae. Larvae fed high densities of prey for 4 h followed by 20 h of reduced-density diet exhibited the same survival and stage duration as controls that were continuously fed high-density prey. Our results define sub-optimal diets that can be used experimentally to determine the nutritional contributions made by naturally-occurring prey organisms during larval development in the two species. In nature, larvae may satisfy nutritional requirements through periodic encounters with dense prey patches during vertical migrations by day or night.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, mammographic, and sonographic findings of phyllodes tumor of the breast and correlate them to the benign or malignant pathological nature of the lesion and its clinical behavior. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings of 12 cases of phyllodes tumors diagnosed in our hospital in the past 6 years, 6 of which were malignant. The surgical management and clinical course of the patients were also reviewed. Mammographically, soft tissue masses ranging from 2.5 to 15 cm were present in all patients. One patient had a mixed fat and water density mass and 2 patients had masses associated with coarse calcifications. At sonography, all tumors were well circumscribed; two of them were homogeneously hypoechoic, and the rest had heterogeneous internal echoes. Eight patients showed internal cystic areas. None of these characteristics proved to be useful in ascertaining the benign or malignant nature of the tumor. At surgery, 5 patients underwent mastectomy and 7 patients local excision of the tumor. Three of the later tumors, one benign and two malignant, recurred after several months. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy suggested the diagnosis of phyllodes tumor in only 3 cases. After surgery, six tumors were classified as benign and six as malignant, three of which being of low-grade malignancy. None of the clinical or radiologic characteristics of the tumors were useful in predicting their histological nature or their behavior after surgery. Preoperative fine-needle aspiration biopsy often misdiagnosed the tumor as benign fibroadenoma. Only the histopathologic features of the excised mass proved to be helpful in assessing malignancy.

Notes: Abstract. Paget's disease is a common entity but osteosarcoma arising in Paget's disease is an infrequent complication. Primary osteosarcomas are typically long bone tumours and the skull is rarely affected. A case with malignant transformation of Paget's disease of the skull and an unusual clinical presentation is reported. Computed tomography scans of the tumour area show interesting results. Main features are: an intensive sclerotic reaction of the host bone, an inner and outer spiculation of the calvarium, radial ossifications in the soft extracranial mass, and spotty calcifications and ossifications of the osteosarcomatous portion infiltrating the brain.

Notes: Abstract We present a patient and two cousins who are all affected with a myasthenic syndrome that could be considered as a congenital or infantile form. The immunological studies performed do not support conclusions about the immunological pathogenesis. Nevertheless circulating immunocomplexes were detected in one case. The genetic electrical, clinical and therapeutic aspects are discussed.

Notes: Semisolid forging process requires special movement of the ram, until now onlyachievable with hydraulic presses. The upper die, placed on the press ram, must move fast duringforming of the component in order to reduce segregation phenomena, and, once the part is shaped, the die must squeeze the material so that the contraction of the material is overcome and noshrinkage defects are formed. Traditional mechanical presses are not able to reproduce this kind ofcycles, only possible with hydraulic presses. The introduction of servo motors in mechanical pressesmakes possible the achievement of those requirements, and, therefore, the use of these presses forthe semisolid forging processes. The main characteristic of this type of machines is the eliminationof the flywheel and the clutch; in the solution proposed by the press builder Fagor, the AC servomotor drives the ram of the press by using a transmission based on gears and a crank. This paperpresents some of the results achieved during the semisolid forging of A356 aluminium alloy using a400 tons Fagor servo motor driven mechanical press installed at the University of Mondragon

Notes: Abstract: We have studied the expression of an endoglucanase from Clostridium cellulolyticum in mutant strains of Escherichia coli that overproduce haemolysin. When these mutants were transformed with plasmids encoding the endoglucanase, they showed a significantly enhanced endoglucanase activity, compared to transformed parental strains. Among the mutants, strain Hha-2 showed the highest production. We have identified the endoglucanase gene product synthesized in E. coli Hha-2/pBP8 and detected an increased amount of the enzyme parallel to the increase of endoglucanase activity. This was mainly localized in the periplasm and only a small percentage of it was found in the culture fluid.
