Notes: Abstract Values of the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in water and aqueous polymer solutions at 20 and 30°C and about 1 bar total pressure are given. The measurement of these values has been performed according to the recently published “constant bubble size” method (CBS-method). The influence of free convection on the determination of diffusion coefficients of slightly soluble gases in liquids has been investigated qualitatively. It is shown that by increase of viscosity, free convection is reduced. To this end, the viscosity is increased by addition of a polymer. Furthermore, the relation between diffusion coefficient and “zero-shear” viscosity has been investigated quantitatively. The “zero-shear” viscosity of the non-Newtonian polymer solutions has been determined. A directly proportional relation between the logarithm of the diffusion coefficient and the logarithm of the “zero-shear” viscosity has been found. Increasing values of the polymer concentration result in a small decrease of the diffusion coefficient. The experimental values are compared with other results from literature.

Notes: Sterilized root residues of asparagus added at a rate of up to 20gkg-1 fresh soil did not influence severity of root and crown rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. asparagi (Foa). Root residues accumulated in field soil during asparagus growing for 10 years did not influence disease severity either. Inoculation of this soil with laboratory-prepared Foa after treatment at 65°C (30min), at which the indigenous pathogen was killed but toxic substances present in asparagus root residues were left undamaged, led to the same disease severity as inoculation of similarly-treated fresh soil.On soil extract agar, aqueous root extracts of asparagus but not those of other crops retarded growth of 31 out of 112 fungal isolates from a range of taxa. Sensitive fungi included Gliocladium spp. and Trichoderma harzianum, but not Foa.Colonization of Foa-infested soil by Fusarium species was greatly enhanced by addition of root material from asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and chicory, but not by that from strawberry and perennial rye grass. As the fraction of Foa amongst the Fusarium population was small, it is concluded that competitive saprophytic ability of the pathogen is far less than that of the nonpathogenic Fusarium species. Fungistasis to Foa was not or was only slightly reduced in soils amended with root residues. In contrast to data reported in the literature, the present results do not suggest an appreciable increase of Foa root rot., or of the Foa population in soils, due to substances present in root residues.

Notes: Abstract Isolates ofFusarium oxysporum from wilted muskmelons, watermelons, cucumbers and from the muskmelon rootstockBenincasa hispida were screened for pathogenicity on seedlings and adult plants of these crops and related species. In seedling tests the isolates were not typically species-specific, contrary to what might be expected as an implication of their characterization as forma specialis. They often attacked species of several genera of plants, but not beyond the family of theCucurbitaceae. In the adult stage, plants were much more exclusively attacked by their corresponding formae speciales, but essential exceptions occurred. Isolates from cucumber were highly pathogenic to muskmelons, in the adulstage even causing more wilt of the latter than of cucumber. Comparing the results of these experiments with data from the literature, it is argued that the proposed f.sp.cucurbitacearum, embracing all formae speciales which specialize on plants within the family of theCucurbitaceae, would best fit in with the present state of knowledge. A proposition is given for equivalence of old and new classifications of isolates.

Notes: Abstract. A hoop is a naturally ordered pocrim (i.e., a partially ordered commutative residuated integral monoid). We list some basic properties of hoops, describe in detail the structure of subdirectly irreducible hoops, and establish that the class of hoops, which is a variety, is generated, as a quasivariety, by its finite members.

Notes: Abstract p(x, y, z) is aternary deduction (TD) term function on an algebra A if, for alla, b ε A, p(a, b,z) ≡ z (modΘ (a, b)), and {p(a, b, z): z εA} is a transversal of the set of equivalence classes of the principal congruence θ(a, b). p iscommutative ifp(a, b, z) and p(a', b', z) define the same transversal whenever0(a, b)=0(a', b'). p isregular ifΘ(p(x, y, 1), 1)=0(x, y) for some constant term 1. The TD term generalizes the (affine) ternary discriminator and is used to investigate the logical structure of nonsemisimple varieties with equationally definable principal congruences (EDPC). Some of the results obtained: The following are equivalent for any variety: (1)V has a TD term; (2)V has EDPC and a certain strong form of the congruence-extension property. IfV is semisimple and congruence-permutable, (1) and (2) are equivalent to (3)V is an affine discriminator variety. Afixedpoint ternary discriminator on a set is defined by the conditions:p(x, x,z)=z and, ifx ≠ y, p(x, y,z)=d whered is some fixed element; afixedpoint discriminator variety is defined in analogy to affine discriminator variety. The commutative TD term generalizes the fixedpoint ternary discriminator. The following are equivalent for any semisimple variety: (4)V has a commutative TD term; (5)V is a fixedpoint discriminator variety. IfV is semisimple, congruence-permutable, and has a constant term, (4) and (5) are equivalent to (3); ifV has a second constant term distinct from the first in all nontrivial members ofV then all five conditions are equivalent to (6)V has a commutative, regular TD term. Ahoop is a commutative residuated monoid.Hoops with dual normal operators are defined in analogy with normal Boolean algebras with operators. The main result: A variety of hoops with dual normal operators has a commutative, regular TD term iff it has EDPC iff it has first-order definable principal congruences.

Notes: Abstract The notion of apseudo-interior algebra is introduced; it is a hybrid of a (topological) interior algebra and a residuated partially ordered monoid. The elementary arithmetic of pseudo-interior algebras is developed leading to a simple equational axiomatization. A notion ofopen filter analogous to the open filters of interior algebras is investigated. Pseudo-interior algebras represent, in algebraic form, the logic inherent in varieties with acommutative, regular ternary deductive (TD) term p(x, y, z), which is defined by the conditions: (1)p(x,y,z) ≡ z (modΘ(x, y)); (2) for fixed elementsa, b of an algebra A, {p(a, b, z):z ∈ A} is a transversal of the set of equivalence classes of Θ(a, b); (3)p(a, b, z) andp(a′,b′,z) define the same transversal wheneverΘ(a,b)=Θ(a′,b′); (4)Θ(p(x, y, 1), 1)= Θ(x, y) for some constant term 1. The TD term generalizes the (affine) ternary discriminator. Varieties with a commutative, regular TD term include most of the varieties of traditional algebraic logic as well as all double-pointed affine discriminator varieties andn-potent hoops (residuated commutative po-monoids in which the partial ordering is inverse divisibility). The main theorem:A variety has a commutative, regular TD term iff it is termwise definitionally equivalent to a pseudo-interior algebra with additional operations that are compatible with the open filters in a natural way.
