    Notes: Summary The hoop forces which develop in circular tubes buried in elastic-plastic ground are investigated. A closed form solution is used to determine the hoop forces which develop when the field stresses in the elastic-plastic ground are initially uniform. The finite element method is used to solve the problem for biaxial field stress. A parametric study is undertaken to assess the influence of tube stiffness and ground strength on the hoop forces, and use is made of elastic stress contours to predict the likely extent of material failure around tubes buried in ground with biaxial prestress.

    Notes: A new semi-analytical solution for the transport of a conservative contaminant species in a fractured medium having a regular two- or three-dimensional fracture network is presented. The application of the technique and some of the practical implications arising from an examination of contaminant migration in fractured systems is discussed. Particular consideration is given to the effects of Darcy velocity, fracture spacing, matrix porosity, dispersivity and the mass of contaminant available for transport. The implications of uncertainty with respect to fracture opening size and ground-water velocity is also discussed and it is shown that provided one can obtain a reasonable estimate of the hydraulic gradient and hydraulic conductivity for the rock mass, uncertainty regarding the magnitude of the opening size and the groundwater velocity does not have a significant effect on predicted contaminant migration for the class of problems being considered.

    Notes: A technique is developed for the analysis of multiple underream anchor systems resting in an elastic soil. This technique may be used to consider anchor systems involving arbitrary anchor inclination and depth beneath the soil surface, as well as arbitrary number, shape, size and spacing of underreams. The approach is largely analytical in nature and involves only a fraction of the computation required for a finite element analysis.Consideration is given to the effects of anchor depth and inclination to the soil surface, and the spacing and number of underreams upon the elastic response of anchor systems. On the basis of the result from this study, a simple, approximate method for estimating the response of multiple underream anchors is proposed. This approach involves the use of several interaction charts, which are presented in the paper, and can be used as a hand method for estimating the load-displacement behaviour of quite general anchor systems to sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes. The use of the approximate approach is illustrated by an example.

    Notes: Solutions for the magnitude and rate of settlement of rigid foundations supported by soil reinforced with granular piles are presented. An analytic solution using the theory of elasticity is developed for the settlement of the foundation and expressions for evaluating the moment and shear distributions across the foundation are given.     Notes: A method for the analysis of the consolidation of a horizontally layered soil under plane conditions is developed. The method depends upon the transformation of the governing equations by a Fourier trasform. This transformation has the effect of reducing the partial differential equations of consolidation to ordinary differential equations. The ordinary differential equations are then solved using a finite layer or finite difference approach. Once the solution in the transformed plane has been found, the actual solution is synthesized by Fourier inversion. The method leads to a considerable reduction in the amount of core storage necessary for solution and enables the solution of quite significant problems to be obtained on a mini-computer.

    Notes: This paper critically examines the use of the modified Cam clay stress-strain model in predicting the thermomechanical behaviour of soft clays. The equations governing the thermomechanical behaviour of a saturated soil are summarized and their methods of solution are briefly discussed. The observed thermomechanical soil behaviour reported in the literature has been compared with the predictions made using the modified Cam clay model. In making these comparisons, two extensions of the well-known modified Cam clay model have been considered: one proposed by Britto et al.1 in which heating induces thermal stresses and strains in the soil but has no direct effect on the work hardening, and the other proposed by Hueckel and Borsetto2 in which a change in temperature also affects the yield surface. The comparisons are confined to the behaviour of normally and lightly overconsolidated clays, where the modified Cam clay is known to perform well. Apart from the effect of a single heating-cooling loop, cyclic behaviour is not considered. It is concluded that both models provide reasonable predictions under isotropic stress conditions. Although exhaustive comparisons have not been made for deviatoric stress excursions (because of the lack of experimental data), it appears from preliminary studies that neither model performs particularly well for this form of loading.
