    Notes: Ionization potentials of BanOm clusters (2≤n≤13,m≤n) have been measured by one photon ionization. These measurements, combined with relative abundances observed in mass spectra recorded under low (direct ionization) and high (dissociative ionization) laser intensity, allow to derive general trends in the evolution of the structure and stability of barium–oxide clusters. Stoichiometric clusters (BaO)n exhibit a very fast transition toward the ionic bulk barium–oxide structure while suboxides BanOn−1 exhibit a completely different behavior. In the small size range (n〈9,m〈5), the evolution of the electronic properties does not show any regular behavior. In particular, BanO3 present very low ionization potentials while, on the opposite, the ionization potentials of BanO4 clusters are relatively high. On the other hand, beyond n≥9, the evolution of the electronic properties is rather smooth and a specific structural transition is observed when the oxygen/barium ratio increases. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: The geometrical structure of ground state Ban clusters (n =2-14) has been predicted from various types of calculations including two ab initio approaches used for the smaller sizes namely HF+MP2( n =2-6), DFT (LSDA)( n =2-6, 9) and one model approach HF+pairwise dispersion used for all sizes investigated here. The lowest energy configurations as well as some isomers have been investigated. The sizes n =4, 7 and 13 are predicted to be the relatively more stable ones and they correspond to the three compact structures: the tetrahedron, the pentagonal bipyramid and the icosahedron. The growth behavior from Ba7 to Ba13 appears to be characterized by the addition of atoms around a pentagonal bipyramid leading to the icosahedral structure of Ba13 which is consistent with the observed size-distribution of barium clusters. Values for vertical ionization potentials calculated for n =2-5 at the CI level are seen to be in quite good agreement with recent measures.

    Notes: Abstract: In this paper, we present an overview of the capabilities of linear and non-linear spectroscopy for the 3D-analysis of gaseous pollutants and aerosols in the atmosphere. The basic technique is Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging). Results obtained in Sevilla and Lyon about the ozone smog formation and the dynamics of the transport of dust particles are presented. Finally, non-linear Mie scattering on atmospheric aerosols has been demonstrated in the laboratory, opening new perspectives for remote sensing.
