Notes: Summary In continuation of our investigations of the wound healing process after cryonecrosis in the liver, kidney, spleen and stomach, the wound healing in the brain was studied under the same conditions. Through a trepanation of about 3 mm diameter, the cortex of the parietal region of the cerebrum was frozen by a cryoprobe applied directly through the intact dura mater (−196° C/30 s). The animals were killed at definite time intervals between 12 h and 21 days after freezing. Twelve hours after freezing, the necrosis of the brain cortex is complete. It extends wedgeshaped into the subcortical white matter. The central parts of the necrosis become colliquative and are demarcated by leucocytes. Two days after freezing, the necrotic area is almost totally invaded by leucocytes. Three days p. op. the brain wound is infiltrated by microglial cells, later on the mesenchymal cell proliferation extends to the meninges. There is new capillary formation and partially a wall like proliferation of the perivascular connective tissue cells. Ten days and later, an uni- or multiloculated pseudocyst develops, which can be considered as the final stage of the reparative wound healing of the cryonecrosis. Similar as in the other investigated organs (liver, kidneys, spleen) these investigations underline the rapid wound healing of the cryonecrosis in the brain. The advantages of cryosurgical manipulations with the well known good wound healing process of other organs, justifies therefore the short term tissue freezing on the cerebrum.

Notes: Summary Histological and autoradiographic studies were performed to investigate the proliferative — reparative actions during wound healing in kidneys with cryoneorosis. The kidney parenchyma of 27 Wistar-rats was frozen for 30 sec. with a cryoscalpel at atemperature of -186° C. The survival time ranged between 12 hours and 30 days. One hour before decapitation3H-thymidine (3.0 μC/gr body weight) was injected intraperitoneally. The autoradiograms (stripping film) were stained with haematoxylin. 12 hours after freezing the cryonecrosis is completely developed but without leucocytic demarcation. In the following 5–10 days, cryonecrosis is organized rapidly by proliferating fibroblasts. After the 5th day the cryonecrotic area shows a pronounced calcification of necrotic tubuli. After 4 weeks the reparation of the cryolesion is finished; a small scar is visible. The reparative-regenerative activity of the kidney parenchyma is limited to a small 300 μ wide tissue area surrounding the cryonecrosis. The labeling index of the tubulus epithelia shows a maximum after 48 hours. The mesenchymal cells in the surrounding area and the fibroblasts within the cryoneorosis have their highest values between the 2nd and 3rd postoperative day. After 14 days the labeling indices are very low. 30 days after freezing there are no differences between the labeling indices in frozen, nonfrozen parts of the formerly injuried kidney and the contralateral organ. These results are comparable to the cell proliferative activity in cryoneorotical liver and spleen; they underline the rapid repair of cryonecrosis without any functional lesions of the organ. But in contrast to the puncture of the kidney, the parenchymal loss after freezing induces cell proliferation in the contralateral organ during the 2nd and 10th day.

Notes: Summary The effect of kryosurgery on the renal parenchyma with the aid of a specially designed kryo-scalpel was tested in animal experiments and now described. The advantages of this method consist in the avoidance of an interruption of the central blood supply after clamping of the hilum of the kidney, the minimal loss of blood, the moderate scar formation of the parenchyma and lastly the possibility of removing only isolated diseased portions of the renal parenchyma.

Notes: Summary The comparison of two groups of patients with different anastomosis techniques (346 large bowel resections) demonstrates a lower degree of complications and mortality rates with the single layer anastomosis. These observations were proven in dogs. The double layer sutures had a prolonged healing process, a delayed revascularisation, intramural abscess formation and a stenotic intraluminal roll building. These problems were not observed in single layer anastomosis, rather than a faster healing process. Angiographically the capillary infiltration already during the first postoperative week was seen.

Notes: Summary The autoradiographic studies on spleen of rats show — compared with results after cryosurgery on liver and kidney of rats — that local deep tissue freezing induces irreversible cell injuries, but the localized spleen freezing is followed by an exceptionally fast healing process. After 3 weeks, there are no proliferative mesenchymal activities in the granulation tissue 4 weeks after cryonecrosis, only a small scar can be detected on the spleen surface.
