Abstract The influence of various factors on the bonding of poly(ethylene terephthalate) film is discussed. These factors include surface energy, weak boundary layers, and the mechanical properties of the adhesive. Data are presented in an attempt to demonstrate the relative importance of these various factors. In order to study the effect of the mechanical properties of the adhesive on the resultant bond strength, a series of thermoplastic polyesters has been prepared. This has enabled a variation in mechanical properties to be made with a minimum change in other properties.
