    Notes: We have constructed two wide-band, high-resolution vacuum flat crystal spectrometers and implemented them on the Electron Beam Ion Trap located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Working in unison, these spectrometers can measure an x-ray bandwidth ≤9 Å in the soft x-ray region below 21 Å. In order to achieve this large bandwidth each spectrometer houses either two 125 mm × 13 mm × 2 mm RAP (rubidium acid phthalate, 2d=26.121 Å), two 114 mm × 13 mm × 2 mm TlAP (thallium acid phthalate, 2d=25.75 Å) crystals, or some combination thereof, for dispersion and two position sensitive proportional counters for detection of x rays. The spectrometers are used to measure wavelengths and relative intensities of the L-shell line emission from Fe XVII–XXIV for comparison with spectra obtained from astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. The wide wavelength coverage attainable by these spectrometers makes it possible to measure all the L-shell emission from a given iron ion species simultaneously. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Line emission from highly charged ions in the soft x-ray region represents an important diagnostic for high-temperature plasmas. The wavelength region of 10–30 Å is occupied by lines from the K-shell transitions in N through Ne and L-shell transitions in Ti through Ni. Crystal spectrometers have previously been used to investigate Fe line radiation under well controlled conditions using the LLNL electron beam ion trap facility in this wavelength region. To complement this work we have instituted a grazing-incidence spectrometer with a variable line-spaced, concave grating and a flat field of focus which is suited for a multichannel detector. Simultaneous observations of the Ne-like Fe16+ n=3→2 transitions were made with this instrument and a flat-crystal spectrometer in order to establish the linear polarization of the Fe XVII lines. We present a description of the grating spectrometer and discuss its performance in comparison with Rowland circle based grazing incidence instruments. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-resolution reflection-type crystal spectrometers have been used for x-ray energies up to 13 keV, e.g., the K-shell radiation of heliumlike Kr. In order to extend crystal spectrometer measurements to higher energy x rays from higher-Z elements, we employ the crystal in transmission. The geometry we use is known as DuMond geometry. Using such a transmission-type crystal x-ray spectrometer, we have measured the K-shell radiation of various highly charged high-Z ions. In particular, we present a measurement of the 1s2p 1P1→1s2 1S0 transition in heliumlike xenon, Xe52+. For this transition, we measure a linewidth of 34 eV, which demonstrates that the resolving power we achieved with the new spectrometer is on the order of 1000. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A powerful and versatile, simple to use multiparameter data acquisition system has been implemented for use in spectroscopy. In its standard configuration, the system can acquire signal from 16 time-to-digital converter channels, 16 analog-to-digital converter channels, and 12 scaler inputs. The system was put to use on the electron beam ion trap experiment to record the output from four position-sensitive proportional counters in two soft x-ray spectrometers together with the signal from an x-ray pulse height analyzer. Also recorded are the electron beam energy and the pulse height distribution of the proportional counters. All data are recorded as a function of time. Because the relevant parameters are recorded simultaneously, software gates instead of hardware gates are used to select the data of interest. This has led to a substantial cost saving over earlier data acquisition systems. Data are stored in binary or in ascii format for system-independent processing. The operation of the system is demonstrated in a measurement of the M-shell soft x-ray spectrum of gold. We used the system to record the 3–4 and 3–5 transitions of gold (Au44+–Au51+) excited with a simulated Maxwellian with electron temperature of 2.5 keV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have mounted 1 μm thick aluminized polyimide windows onto the position sensitive proportional counters employed by the wide-band flat crystal spectrometers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory electron beam ion trap experiment. The aluminized polyimide, supported by thin wires across the short axis of the window, is used to isolate the detection chamber of the proportional counters, which operate at a pressure of 760 Torr, from the vacuum chamber of the spectrometer. The windows are modified versions of those developed for the proportional counters which were used during ground calibration of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The transmission properties of these windows are, therefore, well known. The increased transmission efficiency of the polyimide windows relative to the 4 μm thick polypropylene window material previously employed by our proportional counters has extended the useful range of the spectrometer from roughly 20 to 30 Å at energies below the carbon edge, as well as increasing detection efficiency at wavelengths beyond the carbon edge. Using an octadecyl hydrogen maleate crystal with 2d=63.5 Å, we demonstrate the increased wavelength coverage by measuring the resonance, intercombination, and forbidden lines in helium-like N VII in two different density regimes. The thin polyimide windows have also increased the efficiency of the spectrometers entire wavelength range. To demonstrate the increased efficiency we compare the Fe XVII spectrum in the 15–17 Å band measured with the 1 μm aluminized polyimide windows to the 4 μm aluminized polypropylene windows. The comparison shows an average increase in efficiency of ∼40%. The polyimide windows have a significantly lower leak rate than the polypropylene windows making it possible to achieve approximately an order of magnitude lower pressure in the spectrometer vacuum chamber which reduces the gas load on the trap region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract An overview is given of the current spectroscopic effort on the Livermore electron beam ion trap facilities. The effort focuses on four aspects: spectral line position, line intensity, temporal evolution, and line shape. Examples of line position measurements include studies of the K-shell transitions in heliumlike Kr34+ and the 2s-2p intrashell transitions in lithiumlike Th87+ and U89+, which provide benchmark values for testing the theory of relativistic and quantum electrodynamical contributions in high-Z ions. Examples of line intensity measurements are provided by measurements of the electron-impact excitation and dielectronic recombination cross sections of the heliumlike transition-metal ions Ti20+ through Co25+. A discussion of radiative lifetime measurements of metastable levels in heliumlike ions is given to illustrate our time-resolved spectroscopy techniques in the microsecond range. We also present a measurement of the spectral lineshape that illustrates the very low ion temperatures that can be achieved in an EBIT.
