Description / Table of Contents: Tetraorganofluorophosphoranes, R4PFA series of synthetic procedures for the preparation of tetramethyl-, tetraethyl-, methyltri-butyl-, and methyltriphenyl-fluorophosphoranes have been developed, using the corresponding ylids or silylated ylids as starting materials. Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, KHF2, or NH4F were employed as fluorinating agents (eq. (l)-(3), e.g.). The tetraorganofluoro-phosphoranes exist as ionic solids [as with (CH3)4PF] or as molecular species containing pentacoordinate phosphorus atoms [as with (C2H5PF].  -  For fluorotetramethylantimony, a known molecular compound, an improved, and more simple method of preparation has been found. (CH3)4SbF forms addition compounds with (CH3)4PF and CH3(n-C4H9PF, the phosphorus component apparently being in the tetracoordinate onium state. R4PF compounds are good fluorinating agents for halocarbons and halosilanes (eq. (7)).

Description / Table of Contents: Stable Methylnickel Compounds, V. The Methyltetrakis(trimethylphosphine)nickel CationMethylnickel compounds of the type L2(CH3)NiX take up two equivalents of trimethylphosphine to form complexes of the composition L4(CH3)NiX [L=(CH3)3P; X=Cl, Br, J, NCS, O2P(CH3)2]. N. m. r. spectroscopic investigations at low temperatures prove the existence of the methyltetrakis(trimethylphosphine)nickel cation in solution. Its trigonal bipyramidal structure with the NiCH3 group in an axial position is fluxional. Computer simulation of the NiCH3 proton resonance yields an activation energy of 11.6 kcal/mole for the intramolecular pseudorotation. In dilute CH2Cl2 solutions this value does not depend on the nature of the counter ion X-. Only the phosphine in the second axial position of the complex cation is replaced by trimethyl phosphite.

Description / Table of Contents: 1-Halogeno-2,3,4,5,6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5,6-pentacarba-nido-hexaborane (6) Cations, a New nido-Carbaborane TypeFrom the dihalogeno(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) boranes 2,3 and 4 halogenid ions can be abstracted by boron and aluminium trihalides. Hereby the salts 5a, 5b, 6 and 7 with 1-halogeno-2,3,4,5,6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5,6-pentacarba-nido-hexaborane (6) cations are formed, which complete the class of nido-carbaboranes with pentagonal pyramidal structure. The bonding properties in the clusters are qualitatively described by the LCBO-method and confirmed by 1H-, 13C- and 11 B-NMR spectroscopic data. An unusual long spin lattice relaxation time has been measured for the apical boron atom in 7 by the inversion recovery method.

Description / Table of Contents: Structure and NMR Spectra of (R,R/S,S)-1,2-Di-tert-butyl-1,2-bis(2,2-dimethylpropyl)diphosphane 1,2-DioxideThe title compound 4 was formed stereoselectively from tert-butyldichlorophosphane (2) and 2,2-dimethylpropylmagnesium chloride (3) after oxidation of the reaction product with hydrogen peroxide. Most probably the diphosphane (R,R/S,S)-7b is an intermediate in the reaction sequence. The NMR spectra (1H, 13C{1H}, 31P{1H} of 4 were partially assigned and compared to those of phosphane oxide 5, diphosphane (R,R/S,S)-7a and diastereomeric diphosphane disulfides 8a. The title compound 4 possesses the (R,R/S,S)-configuration and crystallizes orthorhombically in the acentric space group Fdd 2 (No. 43) with eight molecules per cell. In the crystal 4 assumes an approximately eclipsed conformation with the P-oxygen atom and the P'-tert-butyl group essentially diametrically opposed. This difference to diphosphane disulfides, which assume a staggered conformation with the sulfur atoms in anti-position, is attributed to the repulsion between the P-tert-butyl groups.

Description / Table of Contents: Basic Metals, XI. Cationic (Cyclopentadienyl)rhodium Complexes Containing Rh—H-, Rh—C-, Rh—Ge-, Rh—Sn-, and Rh—Halogen Bonds[C8H12RhCl]2 reacts with excess trimethylphosphane to give [(PMe3)4Rh]Cl (1). A very rapid exchange of the phosphane ligands occurs in solution of 1. The reaction of 1 with T1C5H5 leads to the complex C5H5Rh(PMe3)2 (9), in which the metal atom is a strong Lewis base. 9 reacts very readily with electrophiles Y+ to give the cations [C5H5(PMe3)2RhY]+ which possess stable Rh—H, Rh-alkyl, Rh—acyl, Rh—Ge, Rh—Sn, and Rh—halogen bonds. They were isolated as PF6 salts [Y = H (2), CH3 (3), C2H5 (4), COCH3 (10), COC6H5 (11), COC6H4OMe-(p) (12), GeMe3 (7). SnMe3 (8). Br (15), cl (13), I (14). The cation Me3SiC5H4(PMe3)2RhH ]+ is formed together with [C5H5(PMe3)2RhH]+ in the reaction of 9 with CF3SO3SiMe3, in ether. Reduction with NaH in THF gives Me3SiC5H4Rh(PMe3)2.

Description / Table of Contents: 1H, 13C, and 31P N.M.R. Data of TrimethylmethylenphosphoraneIn the 1H, 13C, and 31P n.m.r. spectra of (CH3)3P=CH2 the coupling constants 1J(1H13C), 1J(13C-31P), 2J(1H-C-31P) and their relative signs have been measured with the help of double resonance experiments. These data and the chemical shifts indicate a dipolar ylid structure containing an sp2 carbanion and an sp3 onium center.

Description / Table of Contents: Tetraorganoalkoxyphosphoranes, R4POR′Trimethylmethylenephosphorane reacts with methanol and ethanol to give methoxy- and ethoxytetramethylphosphorane, respectively. According to molecular weight determinations and 1H- as well as 31P n.m.r. investigations these two compounds have a pentacoordinate molecular structure. Below -65°C the five ligands occupy discrete positions of a trigonal bipyramidal geometry. For the first time alkyl groups are found in an axial position. (CH3)4POCH3 and (CH3)4POC2H5 decompose above ca. 130°C to yield (CH3)3PO and alkane. This type of decomposition is encountered with the products obtained from (CH3)3P=CH2 and isopropyl and tert-butylalcohol already at room temperature. With trimethylsilanol a crystalline 1 : 1 adduct is formed at 0°C, which decomposes to (CH3PO, CH4, and (CH3)3SiOSi(CH3)3. The product formed with phenol is assigned an ionic structure (CH3)4P ⊕ OC6H5⊖.  -  Alkoxyphosphoranes with pentacoordinate phosphorus atoms (5-7) are also obtained from methylenetriphenylphosphorane and alcohols. Thermal decomposition in this case leads to the phosphine CH3P(C6H5)2 and alkyl aryl ethers, e.g. anisol for 5 (eq. (12)). tert-Butylalcohol does not form a phosphorane with (C6H5)3P=CH2. Only a proton exchange process involving the OH, CH3, and CH2 hydrogens is observed. The compounds 5-7 were also shown to dissociate in solution and to undergo this exchange, probably through the equilibrium according to eq. (6).

Description / Table of Contents: Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopic data of eleven tetracyclo[4.1.0.02,4.03,5]heptanes, two tetracyclo-[5.1.0.02,4.03,5]octanes and twelve tricyclo[4.1.0.02,7]hept-3-enes are reported. In the tetracycloheptanes, halogens located at the 7-position cause large δ substituent effects. endo-Halogens shift the C-4 signal to lower field by about 6 ppm, while exo-haolgens produce upfield shifts of the C-3 signal, which are dependent on the nature of the halogen and reach a maximum of 9.1 ppm in the case of fluorine. An orbital model is proposed to explain the δ upfield shifts. The compounds containing fluorine reveal a connection between the δ substituent effects and the corresponding 13C—19F coupling constants. Substituents in the 5 position of tricycloheptenes are γ-substituents of C-1, C-3 and C-7 and produce downfield shifts of the absorptions of these nuclei. Their dependence on the nature of the substituent follows approximately those in 1-substituted adamentanes; in the case of C-7, however, their magnitude by far exceeds the adamantane values, bromine (15.5 ppm) being most effective.
