Notes: Abstract Rubber compounds are traditionally reinforced with carbon black or silica fillers of minute particle size. Prior studies in which much larger recycled rubber scrap has been incorporated, indicate that only low levels can be tolerated before significant deterioration in performance is noted. Failure can be superficially linked to macroscopic flaws as is commonly observed in both thermoplastics and elastomers. In this study a detailed examination of soft elastomeric fillers in a polybutadiene matrix is described. In particular the effect of filler hardness and interfacial bonding is stressed. An estimation of the interfacial adhesion is made from peel tests.

Notes: Abstract Thick, freestanding, flexible films of polypyrrole have been prepared from propylene carbonate solutions of pyrrole monomer containing tetra-ethyl ammoniump-toluene sulphonate electrolyte The conductivity of the films was found to vary with orientation of the sample, deposition temperature and time. Conductivities of up to 338.4 S cm−1 were attained with samples prepared at 0°C. XRD analyses have revealed a difference in structure with sample orientation which affects the conductivity of the material significantly.

Notes: Abstract This study examines the morphology and mechanical properties of acrylate styrene acrylonitrile (ASA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) blends. The morphology of the 60/40 and 40/60 ASA/PET blends reveals a dispersed phase morphology verging on co-continuity, whilst the 50/50 blend appears to be completely co-continuous. Processing temperature has no effect on blend modulus or tensile strength and there is no statistically significant difference in mechanical performance between the three blend ratios. Charpy impact resistance decreases with increasing processing temperature. The fracture surface reveals a similar mushroom fibril morphology found for the ASA/polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) system, but is less extensive. Thermal analysis shows a marked drop in glass transition temperature for the blends compared to the component polymers.

Notes: Abstract Electrically conducting polymers have been prepared from pyrrole by electrodeposition through two types of isoporous membranes. When pyrrole is polymerized through isoporous polycarbonate membranes, with the polycarbonate subsequently removed with chloroform, a relatively low density of short filaments is produced. Membranes of large pore diameter gave few, rough filaments, but as the pore size decreased the number of filaments increased and their walls were much smoother. A method in which the filaments are contiguous with a supporting sheet is described. When honeycomb structured γ-alumina membrane is employed, a quite different product is possible. A very high density polymer of long, hexagonal filaments appear after the γ-alumina is leached using sodium hydroxide. This material has a very high surface area and structural regularity. It has potential as an electrode material in which switching from conducting to non-conducting states could be efficiently achieved by rapid expulsion of counter-ion.

Notes: Abstract Polypyrrole films, typically 0.2 mm thick, were prepared by electrodeposition withp toluene sulphonate as dopant anions. Conductivities of up to 340 S cm−1 were found, comparing favourably with other cited examples. Conductivity along each sample was found to be much greater than across: such asymmetry may be exploitable. Electrodeposition temperatures (0° C) lead to higher conductivities than at 25° C. The structure was amorphous as indicated by X-ray diffraction, and the morphology was found to be nodular by using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Films were found to be quite strong and tough, although some reduction in mechanical performance was found after ageing in air. Fracture surfaces of tensile test pieces suggest a layered structure, with little evidence for viscous deformation being evident.

Notes: Abstract Fibrillar polypyrroles have been prepared by electrodeposition through honeycomb γ-alumina membranes. The morphology has been extensively studied using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The rate of fibre growth in several solvents has been measured by direct length measurement. The occupation of the host membrane pores by polypyrrole has been examined by ultramicrotome techniques. In extended polymerizations, both solid rods and tubes are found.

Notes: Abstract The strain energy release rate,G c, of polystyrene (PS) containing rubber crumb has been examined. It was found that for unmodified crumb, addition of small amounts (5%) leads to 100% increase inG c. This is attributed to crazing in the PS. However, further addition of crumb leads to reductions inG c, as the crumb-PS adhesion is low and interfacial failure results. If the crumb is modified with PS its adhesion to the matrix PS increases and internal rupture of the rubber occurs.G c for these composites increases linearly with crumb loading, and is due to matrix crazing as well as rupture of the rubber phase.
