Notes: Abstract The nuclear structures of193Ir and195Ir have been studied using the194Pt(t, α) and196Pt(t, α) reactions. Levels up to ∼2MeV in excitation energy were studied with a resolution of ∼13keV (FWHM) and spectroscopic strengths were extracted. The low-lying states in193Ir have been interpreted in terms of both the Nilsson and the rotation-vibration models including Coriolis, particle-vibration and rotation-vibrational couplings. The previously assigned 3/2+ [402], 11/2− [505], 1/2+[400] and 1/2+[411] bands were populated and candidates for the 5/2+ [402] and 7/2+ [404] bandheads were observed. TheK 0 +2 gamma vibration based on the ground state was populated because it is mixed with the 7/2+ [404] state. Surprisingly, there was no significant difference between the stripping and pick-up strengths for the low-lying states in193Ir, suggesting that the equilibrium nuclear shape of193Ir has large overlaps with the shapes of both192Os and194Pt. The nuclear level structure of195Ir appears to be similar to those of the lighter iridium isotopes.

Notes: Abstract The (3He,d) and (α, t) reactions on targets of146Nd and148Sm have been studied, using beams of 24 MeV3He and 27 MeV4He from the McMaster University tandem van de Graaff accelerator. Also the (t, α) reaction on a target of148Sm has been studied, using 17 MeV tritons from the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory tandem accelerator. The reaction products were analyzed with magnetic spectrographs. Information on thel-values was obtained from (3He,d) angular distributions and from ratios of (α,t) and (3He,d) cross sections. In each nucleus a severe fragmentation of the shell-model strength is found. In particular a total of 13(7)l=2 transitions and 6(6)l=0 transitions have been identified in147Pm(149Eu). The results are analyzed in terms of the spherical shell model, which accounts fairly well for the summed spectroscopic strengths. However, with the existence of the (t, α) data a more detailed investigation of the emptiness of individual levels observed in147Pm gives some indication that a deformed scheme might be more successful in describing these nuclei.

Notes: Abstract The (3He,d) and (t, α) reactions on a radioactive Z=64148Gd target were used to populate the single-proton states in149Tb and147Eu. In149Tb the data establish the five single-proton states of the 51 to 82 major shell. The proton occupancies deduced from these experiments suggest that in the148Gd ground state there are on average 1.8(3) proton pairs above the Z=64 shell gap.

Notes: Abstract Neutron-rich isotopes of astatine have been produced through spallation reactions with 600 MeV protons on a232Th target and identified by spectroscopic techniques combined with one-line mass separation at the ISOLDE facility. The half-lives of218At and219At have been remeasured to be 1.5(3) s and 57(4) s, respectively. Four new isotopes of astatine,220−223At, have been observed for the first time, and their half-lives were found to be 3.73(13) min, 2.3(2) min, 54(10) s, and 50(7) s, respectively. Another nuclide,216Bi, has been observed for the first time as the daughter product of the220At alpha decay, and its half-life has been measured to be 6.6(21) min.

Notes: Abstract The new neutronrich isotope 228 Rn was produced by spallation reactions induced by 600 MeV protons in a 232 Th target and identified by massseparation and decay spectroscopy. The Zassignment was confirmed via KX-rays and the genetic relationship to the wellknown daughter product 228 Fr. The halflife of 228 Rn is 65±2 s. Energies and relative intensities of prominent γ-rays are presented for the first time from the decay of both the new isotope 228 Rn and 227 Rn.

Notes: Abstract The150Sm(t,α)149Pm reaction was studied using 17MeV polarized tritons from the tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The alpha particles were analyzed using a Q3D magnetic spectrometer and detected with a helicalcathode position-sensitive counter. The overall resolution was ∼25 keV FWHM. In the present study many of the previous spin assignments have been confirmed, and some ambiguities in earlier studies have been resolved. The important levels at 416 and 751 keV that are strongly populated in the stripping reactions are shown to be 3/2+. Also new fragments of theg 7/2 andd 3/2 shell model states have been located. The deduced spectroscopic factors are compared to those measured in other promethium isotopes. It was found that the total (t, α) strength of the assigned peaks is stable within 15% for the chain of promethium isotopes ranging from mass number 147 to 153.

Notes: Abstract The (3He,d) reaction on targets of142Nd,144Nd and on a target of natural Nd have been studied, using a beam of 24 MeV3He from the McMaster University Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. The reaction products were analyzed with an Enge type magnetic spectrograph and recorded on photographic emulsions. Information on thel-values was obtained from the (3He,d) angular distribution. In the143Pm nucleus no fragmentation of the shell model strength was found while in the145Pm nucleus the fragmentation of thed 3/2 ands 1/2 states was significant, giving a total of 11l=2 and 51=0 transitions. The results are analyzed in terms of the spherical shell model and the agreement with pairing theory is excellent in both cases. A survey of the stripping strength to promethium isotopes with mass numbers ranging fromA=143 toA=151 is presented, using normalizations based on the results from the experiments on the target of natural neodymium.

Notes: Abstract The proton-hole character of states in159Ho has been studied using the162, 164Er(p, α)159, 161Ho reactions with 17 MeV protons. The shapes of angular distributions measured for both nuclei were compared, with good agreement in most cases, to tritoncluster-transfer DWBA calculations. The deviations obtained and the experimental normalization factors deduced for the164Er(p, α)161Ho reaction by comparisons to (t, α) cross sections indicate a need for a revised treatment of the mechanism of the (p, α) reaction on deformed nuclei. By comparisons to the well-known states in161Ho, nuclear structure factors were obtained for many levels in159Ho. The Nilsson assignments for the 3/2+[411], 5/2−[532] and 5/2+[413] bands were confirmed and the lowest rotational members of these bands were established. The anomalous strengths of the strongly mixed positive parity states in159, 161, 163Ho are discussed in the frame-work of the Nilsson model with the pairing and effective Coriolis strengths included. The Coriolis strengths giving best fits to excitation energies also improve the agreement of theory with the experimental nuclear structure factors. Rotational spacings of the 5/2+[413] and especially those of the 5/2−[532] bands in159, 161, 163Ho show mixmg effects unexplainable by the present calculations.

Notes: Abstract Neutron-rich isotopes of radon, produced by spallation reactions in a ThC2 target and selected chemically, were mass-separated and used as samples for radiation counting experiments. Assignments of the activities to radon isotopes were confirmed by genetic relationships to the previously known francium daughters. The halflife for the new isotope227Rn is 23±1 s and that for226Rn is 7.4±0.1 min. X-rays,γ-rays, and conversion electrons from the223Rn activity were measured. The decay patterns ofK X-rays and known gamma transitions in the223Fr daughter yield a halflife of 23.2± 0.4 min for223Rn, in contrast to the value of 43± 5 min reported earlier. Energies, intensities, and likely multipolarities for the most prominent gamma transitions in the223Rn→223Fr decay are presented.
