    Notes: Abstract The feasibility of joining MoSi2 to 316L stainless steel using active brazing techniques was investigated using two interlayer systems: cusil/Nb/cusil and cusil/Ni/cusil (where cusil is a commercially available Cu–Ag eutectic). Dense, uniform joints were obtained with the cusil/Nb/cusil interlayer system, because the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of niobium closely matched that of MoSi2 over a wide temperature range. Matching the CTEs of MoSi2 and the interlayer material shielded the low-toughness MoSi2 from residual stresses formed during cooling from the joint-processing temperature (830°C). The cusil/Ni/cusil interlayer, however, failed to produce adequate joints because of the large CTE difference between nickel and MoSi2.

    Notes: Abstract Diameters vary significantly in a tow of commercial NicalonTM fibres, which is one of the most attractive ceramic reinforcements for structural composites. It was found that the strength distribution of Nicalon fibres could not be adequately characterized using either single- or bi-modal Weibull distribution. A recently proposed modified Weibull distribution can account for the effect of varying diameter in the characterization of fibre strength. To verify the validity of the modified Weibull distribution, comprehensive mechanical testing and fractographic studies have been conducted on Nicalon SiC fibres with diameters varying from 8 to 22 μm. The experimental results have been reported in Part I. Part II of this paper further modifies the derivation of the modified Weibull distribution to yield a relationship which is similar in form, but soundly based on experimental findings. Factors considered in the modified Weibull distribution include the dependence of fracture toughness and flaw density on fibre diameter, both of which may vary with fibre diameter, as reported in Part I. Comparison with experimental data shows that the current modified Weibull distribution works very well, while both single-modal and bi-modal Weibull distributions are inadequate for describing Nicalon fibres with varying diameters. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

    Notes: Abstract Experimental studies have been conducted to examine the strength and fracture behaviour of monofilament Nicalon SiC fibres with diameters ranging from 8 to 22 μm. The effects of varying fibre diameter, flaw location and flaw population on the mechanical response of individual fibres were investigated by recourse to extensive fractographic analysis performed on fibres fractured under tensile loading. Results indicate that variations in fibre diameter influence the apparent fibre fracture toughness (K1c), with higher K1c values observed for decreasing fibre diameters. Observations also suggest that the location of the critical flaw may play a role in the fracture of Nicalon fibres. Tensile strength values are shown to increase as the normalized distance of the critical flaw from the fibre centre increases, while critical flaw population appears to be strongly dependent on location. The ratio of K1c to geometry factor (Y) is observed to remain constant with varying flaw location. In addition to surface flaws, three distinct internal flaw populations are seen to cause fracture in Nicalon fibres. Based on these experimental findings, a statistical characterization of the strength of Nicalon fibres with varying diameters is presented in Part II of this paper. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

    Notes: Silicon nitride powders have been thermally oxidized between 700 and 1200°C in a high-purity N2-20% O2 gas environment. The powders were subsequently analyzed by x-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies for evidence of oxynitride surface states. Measurements were made on the Si 2p, O 1s, N 1s, C 1s, F 1s and Si KLL transitions, the latter being obtained using bremsstrahlung radiation from the Mg x-ray source. As a function of increasing temperature the data show a clear progression of spectral binding energies and peak shapes that are indicative of more advanced surface oxidation. However, definitive analysis of these data rests on the combined use of both Auger and photoelectron data to define the oxidized surface states for a system that involves two electrically insulating end states: silicon nitride and silicon dioxide. Curve fitting the Si 2p and Si KLL transitions as a function of oxidation, coupled with the use of Auger parameters for the starting silicon nitride and final silicon dioxide, reveals no measurable evidence for an interphase oxynitride in the thin oxide scales of this study where the silicon nitride substrate is detectable. Possible incorrect assignment of oxynitride bonding, from shifted Si 2p states in the carbon referenced spectra, is attributable to band bending as the transition is made from incipient to fully formed silicon dioxide. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
