Notes: Abstract Gastric acid secretion was studied in conscious cats with gastric fistulas. Dimaprit and Nα,5-dimethylhistamine produced higher maximal responses than histamine. In the presence of pyrilamine, the maximal response to histamine was equal to that of dimaprit. Pyrilamine increased abmaximal but not maximal responses to pentagastrin. dimetidine decreased the potency of dimaprit but did not after the maximal response. Gastric acid secretion continued for 90 min after infusion of dimaprit was stopped. Possible mechanisms for the enhancement of acid secretion by rilamine include: (a) blocking of an inhibitory histamine H1-receptor and (b) inhibition of histamine methyl-transferase.

Notes: Summary An understanding of trabecular formation in early skeletal development may provide insight into the problem of trabecular replacement in the aging skeleton. In an optical and scanning electron microscope study of the processes of de novo trabecular generation, the immunohistochemical distribution of collagen Types I, II and III, together with the matrix organising proteins fibronectin and tenascin, has been examined in the ossifying human femoral anlage. In the region of the developing spongiosa, the primary osseous trabeculae that arose by endochondral ossification were assembled around calcified cartilage remnants, consisting almost entirely of aggregates of mineralised microspheres. These structures were specifically recognised by antibodies raised against collagen Type II and fibronectin. In contrast, the primary osseous trabeculae that arose by subperiosteal intramembranous processes, were assembled around a framework of prominent coarse fibres that were recognised by antibodies raised against collagen Type III and tenascin. Irrespective of their origin, all the new trabeculae were similar in their general staining character for collagen Type I and fibronectin. However, throughout the developmental stages examined here endochondral trabeculae were separated from intramembranous trabeculae by a discrete boundary of compressed cells and mineralised cartilage.

Notes: Abstract Detrimental effects of engineering works on the coast and a wish to conserve parts of the coastline have increased realization among coastal managers of the need to examine shoreline problems and proposals for protection in a wider spatial context than the site itself and over a longer time scale than the past few years. This paper outlines the approach taken in one region of the United Kingdom, the central south coast of England, to provide that wider perspective. Authorities responsible for coastal protection and sea defenses formed a coastal group, which, among other activities, commissioned research aimed at providing a greater understanding on which to base shoreline management decisions. A major project undertaken was a sediment transport study in which all existing information relating to coastal sediment processes in the region was collated and analyzed. All inputs, flows, and outputs of sediment were documented. Links between processes were examined for each part of the region. Finally, nine littoral cells of sediment circulation were identified and were suggested as forming a framework for shoreline management. The methods of compilation and analysis are outlined here and are exemplified for one area in the region. The approach is recommended as a cost-effective basis for strategic management of the coast in developed regions.

Notes: Summary The role of ascending noradrenergic pathways in the mediation of central opiate-induced cardiovascular effects has been investigated. The effects of selective χ- and δ-opiate agonists microinjected into the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) of urethane anaesthetized rats were compared following 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of either the dorsal (DNAB) or ventral (VNAB) noradrenergic bundles. In sham lesioned animals both opiates elicited a significant pressor effect and a variable but consistent bradycardia. The δ-agonist responses were not modified in lesioned rats. In marked contrast the pressor effect of the χ-agonist was abolished in both DNAB and VNAB lesioned rats. The bradycardic response was not significantly modified. These findings are consistent with previous observations that the cardiovascular effects of χ- and δ-opiates in the NTS are mediated via different mechanisms, and provide evidence for selective functional actions of endogenous opioids within brain nuclei.

Notes: Abstract Since May 1992 a small, 915-MHz profiler has been operated continuously in downtown Montreal. It is a five-beam system employing a microstrip array antenna, located atop a 14-story office building that houses several academic departments of McGill University. The data are used for research on precipitation physics and the clear-air reflectivity in addition to wind profiling. We are especially interested in situations in which the reflectivities of the clear air and the precipitation are comparable. This permits the study of interactions between the precipitation and the clear air, a new area of research made possible by wind profilers. On clear days in the summer, 30-min consensus winds can often be measured to an altitude of 3 km, but ground clutter in the antenna sidelobes interferes with measurements below 600 m. Rain when present often permits wind profiling down to 100 m and up to 6 km or higher. On cold winter days there are some periods when the reflectivity is too weak at all levels to permit wind estimation. Falling snow, however, provides readily detectable echoes and serves as a good tracer of the wind and so allows profiling over its full altitude extent. The best conditions for observing interactions between precipitation and the clear air are when light rain falls through a reflective layer associated with a frontal surface or inversion. Unexpectedly, flocks of migrating birds sometimes completely dominate the signal at night in the spring and fall seasons.

Notes: Crystals of antithrombin were grown both on earth and in microgravity aboard US Space Shuttle Flight STS-67. The quality of crystals grown in both environments was highly variable and many could not be indexed. The microgravity crystals, however, generally diffracted better, as demonstrated by a novel procedure that estimates the resolution of the Bragg scatter from single diffraction images, without requiring knowledge of the cell dimensions of the crystal. Whereas the best earth-grown crystals never diffracted beyond 3 Å resolution, the best microgravity crystal diffracted to 2.6 Å. The improvement, demonstrated here by a comparison of 23 microgravity and 12 earth-grown crystals, is attributed to better ordered crystal growth in microgravity, although other factors may have contributed also.
