    Notes: Abstract  Three different styrene-butyl methacrylate copolymer latexes were prepared by a uniform procedure but introducing styrene (S), butyl methacrylate (BMA), and minor amounts of acrylic acid (AA), in three different orders: i) simultaneous monomers addition, which yielded {P(SBMA)}; ii) addition of S (and half of the AA) followed by BMA (and the remaining AA), yielding {PS/PBMA} and iii) the inverse order, {PBMA/ PS}. Product characterization was done by centrifugation in density gradients coupled to scattered light scanning photometry of the centrifugation tubes. IR and NMR spectra were obtained from bulk polymer as well as from isopycnic centrifugation fractions. In agreement with findings of other authors, the particles produced by simultaneous monomer addition {P(SBMA)} are made out of the statistical copolymer, whereas sequential monomer addition leads to the formation of latex with homopolymer domains. IR and NMR spectra of {PS/PBMA} and {PBMA/PS} are identical but isopycnic density band profiles of all three samples are distinct. Acrylic acid residues are not detected in the dialyzed latex, using both IR and NMR. Spectra of latex isopycnic fractions do also show significant differences arising from their monomer chemical compositions, but isopycnic centrifugation and spectral data do not reveal any correlation between particle density and monomer composition. Isopycnic centrifugation can thus solve two problems on latex characterization: first, it is a high-resolution preparative technique, unmatched by any other separation method. Second, it yields latex particle fingerprints, which are dependent on particle chemical characteristics, rather than on particle diameters.

    Notes: Summary In some cases patients with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus fail to respond to treatment with oral hypoglycaemic agents. These patients may respond in the same way as Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients. Cellular immune aggression (defined as the capacity of peripheral mononuclear cells to inhibit stimulated insulin secretion by dispersed rat islet cells), insulin autoantibodies, C-peptide response and HLA antigens were determined in 31 Type 2 diabetic patients with secondary failure to oral hypoglycaemic agents and in 22 control subjects. Nine (29.03%) of the 31 Type 2 diabetic patients showed positive cellular immune aggression (2 SD below control group) and 22 (70.97%) presented no cellular immune aggression. There was a relationship between positive cellular immune aggression and each of the following parameters: age, body mass index and microangiopathy. No correlation was found between positive cellular immune aggression and glycaemia, HbA1, blood lipids or atherosclerosis. Patients with positive cellular immune aggression showed a significantly lower glucagon-stimulated C-peptide response vs those with no cellular immune aggression. Within a sub-group of patients who had never been treated with insulin, insulin autoantibodies were present in four of six patients with positive cellular immune aggression. DR2 antigen was found with decreased frequency in patients whereas no DR3/DR4 heterozygotes were observed. Our data support the hypothesis that a group of Type 2 diabetic patients with secondary failure to oral hypoglycaemic agents presented autoimmunity towards pancreatic Beta cells.

    Notes: Conclusion CVV is a single and safe technic and it may be considered an efficient modality in the control of the pulmonary function, observed by the improvement of the PaO2 ratio with a concentrat dicrease of necessity of PEEP, as we observed in all of our patients. We also observed that this results are more revelant on patients with a highest negative fluid balance. In conclusion, HF represents a new modality in control of the ARDS patients and this effect may be beneficial for patient's outcome.

    Notes: Abstract The aetiopathology of extrahepatic portal vein obstruction is unknown. In retrospective studies, umbilical vein cannulation and sepsis have been alleged to cause portal thrombosis. This prospective study was undertaken to detect whether thrombosis and consequent obstruction of the splenoportal venous system develops after umbilical vein catheterization for exchange transfusion in newborns using Doppler ultrasound. Forty children (M = 24; F = 16) who had undergone exchange transfusion for hyperbilirubinaemia were studied at school age. Maximal duration of the venous umbilical cannulation was 120 min and sepsis did not occur. Clinical, biological and sonographic examinations were normal, except in 3 children. In 2 the left branch of portal vein could not be identified (normal variant). Conclusion Our results show that, in these children, umbilical vein catheterization did not lead to development of portal vein thrombosis. However, when other risk factors such as umbilical infection, traumatic catheterization are associated, children should be screened for obstruction of the portal vein.

    Notes: A one-side modulation-doped quantum well of InGaAs lattice matched to InP has been used to investigate many-body effects in a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) electron gas. The sample was grown by vapor levitation epitaxy (VLE). Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out under different optical excitation intensities using 5145 A(ring) line from an argon ion laser. By increasing the laser intensity over five orders of magnitude a 13.2 meV blue shift in the PL line was observed to occur for a single asymmetric quantum well having a 2D electron gas density as low as 0.9×1011 cm−2. The observed blue shift is explained in terms of the reduction of both band bending (of the order of 1.8 meV) and many-body effects (of the order of 11.4 meV) due to the reduction of the 2D electron gas density in the quantum well. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: River (DESERT) and lake (EVOLA) water quality models are used to simulate the influences of alternative water quality management scenarios on the quality of receiving surface waters in the Lake Iseo basin, Northern Italy. The scenarios are representative of the European Union Directive on Urban Waste Water Treatment (91/271/EEC) and of the regional authority’s objective to reduce the total phosphorus loads from point sources entering Lake Iseo and to restore the lake as close as it is practically possible to its former natural qualitative state. Application of DESERT shows that the regional ‘Water Clean Up Plan’ can achieve similar reductions in total phosphorus concentrations in the basin’s main river system, Oglio River, to the 91/271/EEC directive, but at notably lower economic costs. Application of EVOLA to Lake Iseo shows that it is not practical to achieve the regional authority’s objective of a specific total phosphorus concentration in the lake by 2016. Instead, the results show that a more realistic, but higher, total phosphorus concentration can be achieved by 2016. The results of both modelling exercises indicate the usefulness of DESERT and EVOLA for comparing and assessing water quality management scenarios and for revising the regional authority’s final objectives with regards to total phosphorus concentration in Lake Iseo, as well as the regional ‘Water Clean Up Plan’ for restoring and safeguarding the quality of the basin’s surface waters.

    Notes: This paper constitutes the first consideration of the implications of the lake management in Italy arising from the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), in comparison to the provisions of existing national legislation. As a matter of fact, the Italian decrees anticipated the principles of the WFD and have substantially modified the legislation in the field of water in Italy. Important changes were introduced, both in the monitoring systems and in the classification methods for surface waters. The environmental quality status will be determined not only by monitoring the aqueous matrix, but also the sediment and the biota. The new WFD is the major piece of European Union (EU) legislation with environment at its core; it will guide the efforts for attaining a sustainable aquatic environment in the years to come. In the WFD one can see elements from all the different forces that guided the reform of EU water policy: environmental protection, deregulation and subsidiarity. Moreover, elements of the economic instruments approach (introduction of the cost recovery principle), quantitative concerns (setting of minimum flow objectives for rivers and abstraction limits for ground waters) and the quest for integration (river basin management with representation of all stakeholders) are all reflected in the WFD. The paper summarizes the present condition of the most important lakes in the Italian lake district and also highlights the case of Lake Varese, representing a unique case of lake management in Italy. Preliminary results show that there are very few examples dealing with the elements thought appropriate to lake water assessment as required by the WFD. The application of the objectives of the type specified is a largely unknown issue.
