Notes: A FIR interferometer system for the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been developed with some major modifications to previous designs used at ORNL. Due to the highly elliptical cross section of the plasma and the projected plasma densities, a 15-channel interferometer was designed to operate at 119 μ. The large number of channels necessitated the construction of a high-power FIR laser with a fundamental mode Gaussian output over 500 mW. Also, laser stability has been significantly improved. The final design of the pump laser is modular to the extent that any single optical component can be removed and replaced without changing the optical alignment. The FIR cavity was modified by changing to a smaller bore, using gold-coated end mirrors, and using curved internal reflectors. The addition of buffer gas to the cavity provided a significant improvement in output power. Notes: Because of the highly elliptical cross section of the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) plasma, a large number of interferometer channels are required to determine the radial density profile by Abel inversion. A 15-channel system is being developed using a single fan-shaped beam through the plasma and observing the phase shift across the profile with a 15-element detector array. The laser output at 119 μ will be transmitted about 10 m from the laser to the plasma device via an oversized dielectric waveguide. A surface grating will be used to redistribute the Gaussian power distribution to a sinc-type distribution. The beam will then be expanded in one dimension and focused through the plasma. It will then be combined with the local oscillator and focused on the detector array. Commercial Schottky diodes mounted in corner cube reflectors will be used as mixers. The entire system will be controlled by computer including the lasers and the data-acquisition system. Notes: The management of the period after hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass has been compared in a group of patients maintained on nifedipine therapy, a group who had the drug withdrawn at least 24 hours prior to cardiac surgery, and a control group who had never received calcium antagonists. Patients in the drug withdrawal group were significantly more likely to need vasodilator intervention than the treated (p 〈 0.001) or the control (p 〈 0.05) groups. Although nifedipine withdrawal appeared to reduce the need for inotropic support, compared to treated (p 〈0.001) and control groups (p 〈0.005), this may be at the cost of increasing systemic vascular resistance. This observation, coupled with reports of a rebound phenomenon following abrupt withdrawal of calcium antagonist therapy, suggests that nifedipine should be continued up to the time of surgery.

Notes: A case report of cardiac tamponade is described which did not manifest itself until the patient was allowed to breathe spontaneously. Changes in intrapericardial pressure during spontaneous and controlled ventilation are discussed.

Notes: The speed of onset of neuromuscular blockade was measured for increasing doses of vecuronium. Onset times were found to be shorter with larger doses, up to a limit of ED95× 3 (0.15 mg/kg). Thereafter, increasing the dose, even up to ED95× 8 (0.4 mg/kg), did not appreciably shorten the time to full neuromuscular blockade. The clinical implications of, and pharmacokinetic basis for, these findings are discussed.

Notes: A far-infrared scattering experiment was installed on the ELMO bumpy torus experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research (IAEA, Vienna, 1975), Vol. II, p. 141]. The design allowed for coupled scanning of spatial and wave vector parameters while recording the frequency spectrum. Coherent waves and incoherent density fluctuations were observed for varying plasma conditions. Also, coherent waves were recorded in conjunction with ion cyclotron heating fast wave heating experiments, which demonstrated fast wave penetration into the plasma and ion-Bernstein wave conversion between harmonic zones.

Notes: In order to understand the relationships between confinement and space potential (electric field) and between confinement and density fluctuations, plasma parameters in the ELMO Bumpy Torus Scale (EBT-S)[in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research (IAEA, Tokyo, 1974), Vol. 2, p. 141; Plasma Phys. 25, 597 (1983)] have been measured systematically for a wide range of operating conditions. Present EBT plasma parameters do not show a strong dependence on the potential profile, but rather exhibit a correlation with the fluctuations. The plasma pressure profile is found to be consistent with the profile anticipated on the basis of the flute stability criterion for a marginally stable plasma. For a heating power of 100 kW, the stored energy density is found to be restricted to the range between 4.5×1013 eV-cm−3 and 7×1013 eV-cm−3. The lower limit remains constant regardless of heating power and pertains to plasmas lacking an equilibrium and/or stability. The upper limit increases with heating power and is found to result from the onset of instabilities. In between the two limits is a plasma that is in an equilibrium state and is marginally stable. Operational trajectories exist that take the EBT plasma from one limit to the other.

Notes: A far-infrared (FIR) laser scattering diagnostic has been installed on the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) experiment, and tests conducted on the system using a TPX Bragg cell show that the system is fully functional. Scattering experiments to date have shown only small detectable signal levels during normal operation and during ion cyclotron heating (ICH) fast-wave and slow-wave propagation experiments. On the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX), the output signal from the rf amplifiers of the FIR interferometer has been spectrum analyzed and shows frequency-shifted sidebands that correspond to extreme far-forward scattering of the laser beam as it passes through the plasma. Although the scattered signal cannot be resolved spatially, the scattered intensity provides information about density fluctuation levels and MHD activity during different modes of operation. Agreement has been found with measurements made by the x-ray diagnostic and the heavy-ion beam probe.
