Notes: An extension of the dressing method is developed to solve a nonisospectral and variable coefficient generalization of the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation. Nonstandard dynamics of the one-soliton solutions are presented. Decomposition of the two-solitons and their interactions are studied in detail.

Notes: A λ-modified equation for the Caudrey–Dodd–Gibbon–Sawada–Kotera equation is introduced. A new Bäcklund transformation for this equation is derived from the invariance property of the scattering problem for the Caudrey–Dodd–Gibbon–Sawada–Kotera equation under a Crum transformation [Q. J. Math. 6, 121 (1955)]. This, in turn, gives rise to a new Bäcklund transformation for the Caudrey–Dodd–Gibbon–Sawada–Kotera equation.

Notes: To the family of higher order Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equations a new family of higher order mKdV equations depending on a parameter η is constructed. They are connected by an η2-dependent Miura transformation. A Bäcklund transformation is also established. Furthermore, a new gauge transformation is associated to this Bäcklund transformation. It enables one to derive auto-Bäcklund transformations for the families of higher order η2-mKdV and KdV equations, respectively. For illustration, four generations of explicit solutions of the second order KdV equation are presented.

Notes: The method of inverse scattering is extended to solve the initial value problem of a variable coefficient and nonisospectral Korteweg–de Vries equation with time varying boundary condition. One- and two-soliton solutions are examined in detail. By an appropriate decomposition, soliton interactions and asymptotic behaviors are investigated. Oscillating and asymptotically standing two-soliton solutions are discussed.

Notes: A family of higher-order modified Korteweg–de Vries equations with variable coefficients (t-ho-mKdV) is introduced. A one-to-one correspondence between a real solution of these equations and a complex solution of the variable coefficient higher-order Korteweg–de Vries (t-ho-KdV) equations is established through a complex Miura transformation. An auto-Bäcklund transformation for these t-ho-mKdV equations is derived from that of the t-ho-KdV equations. The associated gauge transformations of the corresponding AKNS systems are presented. They enable one to construct a hierarchy of solutions of the t-ho-mKdV equations from a known hierarchy without solving the differential equations for the wave functions except the first one. A new family of higher-order evolution equations with an auto-Bäcklund transformation is also derived in connection with the gauge transformation of the t-ho-mKdV equations.

Notes: Summary Hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies against herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA binding proteins (DBP) have been produced. Five HSV DBP have been characterized according to molecular weight, affinity for DNA, kinetic class and localization within the infected cell. By preparing an immunoadsorbent column from antibody TI8, its specific DBP was purified to apparent homogeneity. The purified DBP retained the ability to bind to DNA.

Notes: Abstract We study the large time behaviour of a nonlinear population model with a general logistic term. It is proved that every solution must have a limit when time becomes infinite. We present conditions that guarantee the boundedness of the solution. Furthermore, we prove that in general no oscillation is possible for the total number of population. This is in sharp contrast to the linear case.

Notes: Abstract We study the generalized sine-Gordon hierarchy and its associatedη-dependent modified sine-Gordon hierarchy. Two Bäcklund transformations for these two families are constructed. One of them is a generalization of the Bäcklund transformations of Wadatiet al. and the other one is new. Gauge transformations of a relevant AKNS system are employed to reduce the integration of these equations via the Bäcklund transformations to quadratures. Three generations of explicit solutions of the sine-Gordon equation are presented.

Notes: Abstract The paper starts with the introduction of the basic requirements of classical intrusion detection and alarm systems, and fire detection systems. The drawbacks of such conventional systems are highlighted. Techniques of computer vision are employed to remove the drawbacks and at the same time, increase the reliability and response rate of the systems. For security and low-level fire detection, a fuzzy-logic-based image-comparison algorithm is deemed adequate. In order to confirm the existence of fire or smoke, techniques related to optical flow are employed as high-level fire or smoke detection which generate a velocity field for the image so that the decision can be judged using fuzzy logic. Details of implementation and some experimental results have been included in the paper for illustration.

Notes: Abstract We consider a variational procedure for approximating the solution of the state regulator problem with time delay. Motivated by a dual formulation of the problem, we introduce a positive-definite functionalF over a certain energy space of Mikhlin and obtain approximating solutions by the Ritz-Trefftz idea of minimizing it over finite-dimensional subspaces. The resulting approximating solutions, in turn, furnish suboptimal solutions which converge to the optimal solution of the regulator problem with time delay. A priori error bounds in terms of splines are given. A posteriori error bounds are also obtained.
