Notes:
A novel beam chopper with two-harmonics ( f and kf ) sweeping voltages is described. It is shown that beam utilization efficiency and the beam quality of the harmonic chopper are much better than that of the conventional sine-wave chopper. The beam utilization efficiency might be even higher than the square-wave chopper for low-velocity ions. In practice, a chopper with 1.5 and 13.5 MHz (k=9) was constructed with great convenience for the beam-pulsing system of a 4.5-MV Van de Graaff in Peking University. The bench tests indicated that the beam efficiency of the harmonic chopper was higher than a single-frequency chopper by about 47%, which agrees with the theory and the design.
