Notes: Summary This paper presents an experimental study of the newly developed double-punch test method for determination of the tensile strength of rocks. The method for preparation of test specimens and test procedure is reported and discussed. Comparisons of tensile strength determined from double-punch and split-cylinder tests are also presented.

Notes: Summary The omentum of 13 rats were removed from the abdomen and placed directly on the brain. 5–14 days later the omentum and the underlying brain were joined by numerous vascular anastomoses in 9 rats. The purpose of this work was to study the use of omentum to establish extracranial vascularization of the brain.

Notes: Mortar specimens were impregnated with methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, styrene, and crosslinking agents in various combinations. After polymerization of the monomers in situ, studies of mechanical properties such as Young's modulus and compressive strength were made. In one experiment, various ccpolymers of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate were prepared and tested as a function of temperature. Excellent reinforcement was obtained with any combination of monomers as long as the resulting polymer was at a temperature below its glass transition temperature. This suggests that the modulus of the reinforcing polymer is crucial, glassy behavior being required. The addition of crosslinking agents such as TMPTMA increased the high temperature strength, however.

Notes: The upper bound method of limit analysis of perfect plasticity is applied to stability problems of slopes with a general nonlinear failure criterion. Based on the upper bound method, a numerical procedure is suggested, which converts the complex system of differential equations to an initial value problem. Using this numerical procedure, an effective numerical method, called the inverse method, suitable for the solution of slope stability problems in soil mechanics with a general nonlinear failure criterion, is presented. A general nonlinear failure criterion for soils is also suggested, from which the effects of nonlinear failure parameters on the stability of slopes are discussed.

Notes: In this paper, the influence of geometrical and physical parameters (size of the sand particle, thickness of the interface layer and ratios of the modulus of elasticity) on stress distributions in a mortar is studied. It is found that a weak or soft interface layer in the mortar will greatly reduce the strength of the concrete; if the modulus of the interface layer approaches to that of the cement paste and the modulus of the sand particle (or aggregate) is 4-10 times as large as that of the cement paste, the concrete will possess a much higher strength and thus has a better property.

Notes: In this paper, the stress states of a sand particle (or aggregate) with an interface layer in a cement paste (or mortar) subjected to uniaxial compression or tension are studied. This is a dual layer inclusion problem. The general analytical solutions of stresses and deformations are obtained in closed form, and the solutions of several special cases including the sand (or aggregate) treated as rigid body and as a hole as well as when the thickness of the interface layer approaches zero are also given.
