Notes: Electrical and magnetic properties of the superconducting oxides with nominal composition (Bi0.7 Pb0.3 )2Sr2Ca2 Cu3 Ox prepared from polymeric precursors have been investigated. Superconducting transition with zero-resistance temperature at T=108 K was achieved for a sample sintered at 840 °C under a low oxygen pressure. The critical current density at 77 K in a zero magnetic field is ∼400 A/cm2 , which is much higher than that of the Pb-free sample. Variations of the superconducting transition temperature, the critical current density, and magnetic properties with heat treatment time are discussed in connection with the structural properties.

Notes: In the ZnSe/GaAs heterostructure, the problems of interdiffusion and thermal stability are very crucial. We have investigated the effects of annealing on ZnSe grown on GaAs by photoluminescence and double-crystal x-ray measurement. In order to investigate annealing effects of the ZnSe/GaAs heterostructure, we used 1.0-μm-thick and 0.2-μm-thick samples. Samples were annealed in the temperature range of 200–500 °C in an N2 ambient for 3 min using a face-to-face configuration with ZnSe epitaxial layer as a cap layer. In the annealing temperature above 450 °C, new emission peaks appeared in the range of 2.62–2.72 eV. The biaxial compressive strain due to lattice mismatch at the growth temperature is mostly relaxed at 400 °C, and the epilayer annealed at 500 °C has a biaxial tensile strain. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background : It has been suggested that chronic, persistent, uncontrolled inflammations in the stomach could provide the basic step for the beginning of carcinogenesis. One of the potential clinical applications of rebamipide is the inhibition of the immunoinflammatory response in gastric mucosa imposed by Helicobacter pylori.Aim : To determine the implications of long-term rebamipide treatment in H. pylori infection, we studied the underlying moleculo-pathological changes in gastric lesions in mice infected with H. pylori (SS1 strain), following this treatment. Methods : C57BL/6 mice were sacrificed 24 and 50 weeks after H. pylori infection, respectively. Colonization rates of H. pylori, degree of gastric inflammation and other pathological changes including atrophic gastritis and metaplasia, serum levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ and IL-10, mRNA transcripts of various mouse cytokines and chemokines, and NF-κB binding activities, and finally the presence of gastric adenocarcinoma were compared between an H. pylori infected group (HP), and an H. pylori infected group administered with long-term rebamipide-containing pellet diets (HPR).Results : Serum levels of IL-1β, IFN-γ and TNF-α, the gastric mucosal expression of ICAM-1, HCAM and MMP, and transcriptional regulation of NF-κB-DNA binding were all significantly decreased in the HPR group compared with the HP group. An RNase protection assay showed, in the rebamipide administered group, significantly decreased mRNA levels of apoptosis-related genes such as caspase-8, FasL, Fas, TRAIL and various cytokines genes such as IFN-γ, RANTES, TNF-α, TNFR p75, IL-1β. In the experiment designed to provoke gastric cancer through MNU treatment with H. pylori infection, the incidence of gastric carcinoma was not different in either group. However, long-term administration of rebamipide showed the advantage of decreasing precancerous lesions like chronic atrophic gastritis and showed molecular evidence of attenuation of proliferation. Conclusion : The long-term administration of rebamipide should be considered in the treatment of H. pylori since it demonstrated molecular and biological advantages like a lessening of gastric inflammation and a possible chemopreventive effect.

Notes: Background : Long-term evaluation of gastric pathology after H. pylori infection is very important in order to reveal its clinical implications, since debate still exists on the gastric carcinogenesis provoked by H. pylori infection in animal models.Aim : Either to evaluate the long-term outcome of H. pylori infection or to determine how H. pylori could provoke gastric cancer in the mice model. Methods : Four-week-old specific pathogen free C57BL/6 mice (n = 115) were infected with SS1, the mouse-adapted H. pylori strain. After 4, 8, 16, 24, 36, 50 and 80 weeks of bacterial infection, the H. pylori-infected mice were sacrificed. Results : After 80 weeks of infection, almost all the H. pylori-infected mice developed hyperplastic gastritis, but did not show any evidence of gastric adenoma, dysplasia or carcinoma. PCNA positive cells were most abundant after 50 weeks and tended to decrease thereafter up to 80 weeks, whereas apoptosis began to be noted 8 weeks after H. pylori infection, showing 7–8 apoptotic cells/high power field, and tending to increase as time passed. Normally observed neutral mucin decreased during the experiment, showing the most marked decrease 50 weeks after H. pylori infection. In contrast, acidic mucin was noted from 50 weeks after infection. Conclusion : The SS1-infected mouse seems to be a suitable animal model for H. pylori-related research, and H. pylori itself does not induce gastric cancer in normal wild-type mouse model following long-term exposure, which could be explained by the balance that exists between cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Notes: Summary The production of biogas with 52% methane from anaerobic fermentation of the alcohol stillage derived from sugarcane molasses has been studied using a two-stage digestor. Gas productivity of 0.4 m3/KgCOD day with four days of hydraulic retention time was much better than the reported holding times between 10 to 15 days with a single digestor.

Notes: Abstract Artificially layered Bi2Sr2Can−1CunO4+n films were synthesized by sequential sputter deposition of BiO, SrCu0.5O1.5 and CaCuO2 layers. Annealing behavior of these films which were irradiated by Ar ions was studied. Defect assisted improvement of their crystalline perfection is expected which might results in the improvement of the superconducting properties of these films. An artificial film, such as an intergrowth of 2223 and 2234 phases, and superstructure films of (2245)1(2201)1 and (2234)1(2212)1, were irradiated by Ar ions (150 keV, 2−10×1012 ions/cm2) and annealed at 730 °C. An improvement of superconducting transition temperatures were observed.

Notes: The kinetic behavior of a system of multiple enzyme in solution has been studied in a variable volume batch reactor at pH 5, controlled dissolved oxygen concentration, and T = 30°C. The enzymes used were glucoamylase (R. delemar), glucose oxidase (A. niger), and gluconolactonase (A. niger), all of which are important commercial biocatalysts, and a disaccharide was employed as the starting substrate. This study includes the basic kinetic properties of individual enzymes and interactions between components of the reaction mixture. Classical Michaelis-Menten single substrate or two substrate kinetic with parameters based on initial rate data predict correctly the batch time course of the sequential reaction network.

Notes: Apparent kinetics and pH-activity relationships have been determined for glucoamylase and glucose oxidase immobilized on activated carbon using a diimide method. Reaction rate expressions of Michaelis-Menten form adequately approximate the observed kinetics for both enzyme preparations over the ranges of substrate concentrations considered. Influences of external mass transfer as well as substrate and product adsorption on interpretation of the experimental data have been examined. Immobilization of a glucose oxidase-gluconolactonase enzyme mixture has been found to increase substantially the ratio of gluconolactonase to glucose oxidase activities compared to the corresponding activity ratio for these enzymes in solution.
