Notes: The Korea Multipurpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC) project has been initiated to develop and build a high current proton/H− linear accelerator capable of delivering an 1 GeV cw proton beam with an intensity of 20 mA in the final stage. The major proton beam will be used for nuclear-waste transmutation, energy production, and nuclear physics experiments while utilizing the minor negative hydrogen beam for basic science research and medical therapy. A Duoplasmatron proton source for the KOMAC linear accelerator has been built at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The hydrogen beam currents of up to 50 mA at the extraction voltage of 50 kV are routinely obtained. A low normalized rms emittance of 0.2 π mm mrad and a proton fraction of over 80% are obtained in this source. With the 100% duty factor of ion source operation, the arc filaments of the source have survived over 40 h. Except for the filament lifetime, the achieved parameters of the proton beam source are satisfying most requirements of the KOMAC ion source. The ion sources can extract the 10 mA nitrogen beam and 3 mA argon beam for the industrial surface modification processes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The phase transformation of NdFeB melt-spun alloys with low Nd content of 4–8 at. % was investigated by thermomagnetic analysis and x-ray diffractometry. Experimental results have shown that the metastable Nd2Fe23B3 compound formed in the alloys is considered to be transformed to Nd2Fe23B3+α-Fe+Fe3B in the temperature range of 550–690 °C, α-Fe+Fe3B+Nd1+eFe4B4 in the temperature range of 690–730 °C and finally α-Fe+Nd1+eFe4B4 above 840 °C. From the results, it has been concluded that Nd2Fe14B is not formed from metastable Nd2Fe23B3. On the other hand, the melt-spun alloy of Nd2Fe23B3 (∼Nd7.1Fe82.1B10.7) annealed under optimum conditions has been found to be composed of α-Fe, Fe3B, and Nd2Fe14B phases. The alloy has a coercivity comparable to Fe3B-based Nd4Fe77B19 and relatively high-energy product of about 71.6 kJ/m3 (∼9 MG Oe). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background Although epidemiological studies have found an association between Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and severe asthma, the causality and underlying mechanism are largely unknown. We hypothesized that C. pneumoniae infection increases the proliferation and enhances the survival of immune and inflammatory cells, resulting in reduced responsiveness to corticosteroids and suggesting that the underlying mechanism is related to a TNF-α-dependent pathway. Methods Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were cultured in vitro in the presence or absence of C. pneumoniae infection. Responsiveness to corticosteroids was assayed by adding dexamethasone, and the underlying mechanism was investigated by treating cells with infliximab that is a chimeric anti-TNF-α monoclonal antibody. Cellular proliferation and apoptosis was assessed by thymidine uptake and counting apoptotic cells using flow cytometry. Results Cellular proliferation was significantly higher in C. pneumoniae-infected PBMCs than in uninfected PBMCs, which is more prominent in Th2-dominant microenvironment. The anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effect of corticosteroid were significantly reduced in C. pneumoniae-infected PBMCs compared with uninfected PBMCs. The proliferative effect of C. pneumoniae infection and the reduced response to corticosteroid were effectively reversed by blocking the TNF-α pathway at least partially. Conclusion C. pneumoniae infection enhanced the proliferation and survival of immune and inflammatory cells, resulting in steroid resistance. The reversal of these phenomena by the TNF-α inhibitor suggests that TNF-α may play an important role in the induction of steroid dependence or resistance. A TNF-α inhibitor may therefore be a candidate agent for managing steroid-dependent or -resistant severe asthma.

Notes: A detailed systematic study on the growth morphology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on Si in atmospheric pressure thermal chemical vapor deposition was undertaken. The role of NH3 for vertical alignment of CNTs was investigated. The direct cause for the alignment was a dense distribution of the catalytic metal particles, but that the particles are maintained catalytically active under amorphous carbon deposits was established by NH3. It allows a dense nucleation of the CNTs, and consequently, assists vertical alignment through entanglement and mechanical leaning among the tubes. The CNTs grew in a base growth mode. Since Ni is consumed both by silicide reaction and by capture into the growing tube, the growth stops when Ni is totally depleted. It occurs earlier for smaller particles, and thus a long time of growth results in a thin bottom with poor adhesion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bi4Ti3O12 thin films have been grown by laser ablation on SrTiO3(100) and SrTiO3(110) substrates. Substrate surface orientation is found to be an important growth parameter which determines crystal axis orientation, grain growth behavior, and electro-optic properties of the Bi4Ti3O12 thin films. The films grown on SrTiO3(110) shows a ferroelectric phase transition near 720 °C and a large quadratic electro-optic effect with the effective coefficient 1.1×10−16 m2/V 2.

Notes: Background: Although many chronic cough patients have complained of an induced cough by cold air contact, the clinical relevance of cold air to inducing a cough and the diagnostic value of a hyperpnea with cold air (HCA) challenge to detect a hyperreactive cough reflex have not yet been investigated. Methods: Recordings of cough counts after a 2-min HCA challenge were performed in 49 chronic cough patients and 15 healthy controls. Capsaicin cough provocation tests, which determine the threshold concentration of capsaicin that induces five or more consecutive coughs (C5), were also administered. Results: After comparing the results from the capsaicin cough provocation tests of the patients and the controls, the chronic cough patients were divided into two groups: an increased cough sensitivity (ICS) group (n = 28) (C5 〈 32 μmol/l) and a normal cough sensitivity (NCS) group (n = 21) (C5 ≥ 32 μmol/l). The median value of induced cough counts after a HCA challenge was 11 coughs in patients with ICS and was a significantly enhanced cough response compared to that of the patients with NCS and healthy controls (four coughs, respectively). Conclusions: A simple cough provocation test using a HCA challenge may be useful for detecting ICS. It also suggests that hyperreactive cough reflexes may be one of the mechanisms of inducing chronic cough.
