    Notes: A compact, low cost gyrotron traveling-wave-tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier capable of producing high-power, broadband, millimeter wave radiation is reported. The interaction circuit is a periodic, magnetic field plane (H plane) bend, transverse folded waveguide employed with a high-power axis-encircling electron beam. Transverse beam modulation and wave amplification in the folded waveguide gyro-TWT are observed in both linear theory and large signal simulations. Calculations from an equivalent circuit model and a three-dimensional electromagnetic code predict a mode coalescing of the first stop-band in a periodic structure. The mode coalescing is verified from experimental measurements. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Numerical simulations of a W-band two-stage tapered, frequency multiplied gyrotron- traveling-wave-tube amplifier are reported. Unlike conventional harmonic gyrodevices, a drive signal at the fundamental harmonic frequency is injected in the first stage for beam modulation, and amplified output radiation is extracted from the third harmonic cyclotron resonance interaction. Numerical results show that broadband millimeter wave radiation is obtained with an efficiency of 10%–15%, a gain of ∼30 dB, and an instantaneous bandwidth of ∼10% at a center frequency of 95 GHz for Δvz/vz=2%.

    Notes: Deflection of carbon dioxide and helium-neon laser beams has been used to measure plasma and neutral density gradients during the operating mode and after the shorting time of a long-pulse field-emission electron beam diode. Plasma density gradients of (1014–1015) cm−4 were observed throughout the diode during the final microsecond of the 2–3 μs electron beam pulse. The neutral density gradient was less than 1×1018 cm−4 during the electron beam pulse. Upon diode shorting, neutral density gradients increased to (1018–1019) cm−4 over ∼1 μs, and decayed over many microseconds. Plasma density gradients of ∼1015 cm−4 were also observed after shorting. These experiments demonstrate the value of carbon-dioxide laser and helium-neon laser deflection for diagnosing plasma and neutral particles in long-pulse electron beam diodes.

    Notes: We report measurements of the ratio of the perpendicular velocity to the parallel velocity, α= v⊥ /v(parallel), of a relativistic electron beam gyrating in a magnetic field by the use of (1) Cerenkov emission from a glass plate, detected by a gated microchannel plate image intensifier camera, and (2) electron-beam-induced radiation darkening pattern on the same glass plate. The measurements are based on a direct determination of the Larmor radius of an electron beam of known energy. Experiments were performed on a long-pulse electron beam accelerator with e-beam diode parameters: VD = 0.6–0.9 MV, pulse length=0.5–1 μs, ID = 1–10 kA. The experimental value of α agrees with simulation results from particle trajectory codes as well as theoretical predictions from Busch's theorem and adiabatic theory.

    Notes: DNA is a nuclear macromolecule that circulates in the blood where its levels can reflect the activity of inflammatory and malignant diseases. While dead and dying cells have usually been considered the source of blood DNA, the mechanisms for its release during apoptosis and necrosis are not well defined. To elucidate DNA release, an in vitro model system was used, assessing DNA in the media of living, apoptotic or necrotic Jurkat and U937 cells. Apoptosis was induced by etoposide, camptothecin or staurosporine, while necrosis was induced by heating at 56 °C. DNA release was measured by fluorometry with the dye PicoGreen while the extent of death was measured by fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis with propidium iodide and annexin. Apoptotic Jurkat cells released significantly more DNA in the media than untreated cells while necrotic cells did not show significant DNA release. U937 cells showed similar findings. Pretreatment of Jurkat cells with z-VAD-fmk, a caspase inhibitor, reduced both apoptosis and DNA release. By gel electrophoresis, extracellular DNA from apoptotic cells showed laddering with low molecular weight fragments. These studies suggest that extracellular release of DNA is a consequence of apoptosis and may account for some of the DNA in the blood.

    Notes: Abstract A design study of a double-anode magnetron-injection-gun is performed to incorporate the electron gun into a high power 28GHz gyroklystron amplifier operating at 70kV and 8.2A. The electron gun is designed to be used in a tapered magnetic field in the cathode region produced from an iron-free superconducting magnet. An electron trajectory code predicts a beam axial velocity spread of 5.9% at α = 1.5, 70kV, 8.2A and 10.4kG, which is a high quality electron beam suitable for the high gain, high efficiency, five-cavity gyroklystron amplifier. The successful design of the high quality electron gun is attributed to a longer gap between the modulating anode and the grounded anode compared with the case of the first 28GHz electron gun built with an iron enclosed electromagnet.

    Notes: Abstract We design a single-ridged coaxial hybrid coupler which excites a TE011 mode of high mode content in a cylindrical cavity, resonating at 28.2GHz. The coupler consists of a WR-28 rectangular waveguide, a coaxial TEn11 cavity, and a cylindrical TE011 cavity. Both TE311 coaxial cavity and TE411 single-ridged coaxial cavity are analyzed to examine the TE011 mode purity in the central cavity. Mode purity analysis is performed by a field expansion method using Fourier-Bessel orthonormal basis functions. Numerical calculations predict that the TE411 single-ridged coaxial cavity excites the TE011 mode with mode purity of 98.6%, which is improved by 3% higher compared with the TE311 coaxial cavity. Measurements on the single-ridged coaxial coupler show a resonant frequency at 28.078GHz and ohmic and external Qs of 1560, 473 respectively, which are in good agreement with the simulated results of a 3-D finite element electromagnetic code.
