    Notes: Alkylbenzene-degrading Rhodococcus sp. strain DK17 is able to utilize phthalate and terephthalate as growth substrates. The genes encoding the transformation of phthalate and terephthalate to protocatechuate are organized as two separate operons, located 6.7 kb away from each other. Interestingly, both the phthalate and terephthalate operons are induced in response to terephthalate while expression of the terephthalate genes is undetectable in phthalate-grown cells. In addition to two known plasmids (380-kb pDK1 and 330-kb pDK2), a third megaplasmid (750-kb pDK3) was newly identified in DK17. The phthalate and terephthalate operons are duplicated and are present on both pDK2 and pDK3. RT-PCR experiments, coupled with sequence analysis, suggest that phthalate and terephthalate degradation in DK17 proceeds through oxygenation at carbons 3 and 4 and at carbons 1 and 2 to form 3,4-dihydro-3,4-dihydroxyphthalate and 1,2-dihydro-1,2-dihydroxyterephthalate, respectively. The 3,4-dihydroxyphthalate pathway was further corroborated through colorometric tests. Apparently, the two dihydrodiol metabolites are subsequently dehydrogenated and decarboxylated to form protocatechuate, which is further degraded by a protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase as confirmed by a ring-cleavage enzyme assay.

    Notes: The title compound features a doubly protonated dimethyl- and bis(methylcarboxamide)-substituted tetraazacyclotetradecane with the pendant arms disposed over the cavity, an arrangement that is facilitated by intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. The dication occupies a special position about an inversion centre, whereas the ClO4− anion and the water molecule are in general positions, thus forming a crystal with the overall composition C16H36N6O22+·2ClO4−·2H2O. The crystal structure is stabilized by a variety of hydrogen-bonding contacts involving the dication, perchlorate anion and solvent water molecule.

The molecules of the zinc(II) complex are connected into a two-dimensional chain via hydrogen bonds.

Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P-1 with a = 9.731(2) Å, b = 9.789(2) Å, c = 11.998(1) Å, α = 66.66(1)°, β = 76.95(1)°, γ = 87.99(2)°, V = 1020.4(3) Å3, and Z = 1. The crystal structure of 1 shows that the complex is centrosymmetric and the cobalt(II) ion has a slightly distorted octahedral geometry with four nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle and two nitrogen atoms of the pendent arms at the axial positions. Cyclic voltammetry for 1 undergoes reversible one-electron oxidation to the Co(III) and irreversible one-electron reduction to the Co(I).

    Notes: The pressure-jump method has been used to determine the rate constants for the formation and dissociation of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) complexes with cinchomeronate in aqueous solution at zero ionic strength. The forward and reverse rate constants obtained are kf = 2.27 × 106 M-1 s-1 and kr = 3.81 × 101 s-1 for the nickel(II) complex and kf = 1.23 × 107 M-1 s-1 and kr = 2.66 × 102 s-1 for the cobalt(II) complex at 25°C. The activation parameters of the reactions have also been obtained from the temperature variation study. The results indicate that the rate determining step of the reaction is a loss of a water molecule from the inner coordination sphere of the cation for the nickel(II) complex and the chelate ring closure for the cobalt(II) complex. The influence of the pyridine ring nitrogen atom of the cinchomeronate ligand on the complexation of cobalt(II) ion is also discussed.
