Notes: The objective of this paper is to provide some stylized facts on the links between current account deficits and a broad set of economic variables proposed by the literature. In order to accomplish this task, we complement and extend previous empirical research by (1) using a large and consistent macroeconomic data set on current account deficits and other national income variables, (2) focusing on developing economies by drawing on a panel data set consisting of 44 developing countries and annual information for the period 1966-94, (3) adopting a reduced-form approach, instead of holding to a particular structural model, (4) distinguishing between within-country and cross-country effects, and (5) employing a class of estimators that controls for simultaneity and reverse causation. Some of our findings are the following. (i) Current account deficits are moderately persistent. (ii) A rise in domestic output growth generates larger current account deficits. (iii) Shocks that increase the terms of trade or appreciate the real exchange rate are linked with higher current account deficits. And (iv) either higher growth rates in industrialized economies or larger international interest rates reduce the current account deficit in developing economies.

Notes: We provide evidence on the link between infrastructure development and the distribution of income for the period 1960–97. We use roads, railways, telecommunications, and energy measures. The approach is comprehensive as individual measures and composite indices are used. Cross-country and panel regressions are applied. In the latter, we apply GMM dynamic methods to minimize for endogeneity problems. We find that both quantity and quality of infrastructure are negatively linked with income inequality. The quantitative link tends to be stronger in developing countries than the qualitative link. These findings hold when using different econometric methods and most infrastructure measures.

Notes: The aim of this paper is to provide comprehensive empirical evidence on recent theories that link democracy and income inequality for the period 1960–1997. In simple cross-country regressions I find a non-monotonic link between democracy and inequality when using ordinary least squares, instrumental variables, and Eusufzai tests. I also employ dynamic panel data techniques, which control for potential simultaneity and heterogeneity problems. I also find support for the existence of apolitical Kuznets curve. Moreover, it appears that income inequality is unconditionally persistent. Results are robust to different democracy proxies when sensitivity analysis is applied.

Notes: Abstract. We provide cross-country empirical evidence on the link between measures of institutional development and of poverty over the period 1960-1990. We find that the more efficient the institutions, the lower the degree, severity, and incidence of poverty. We provide both ordinary least squares and two-stages least squares estimates, and show that our results are robust for an overall measure of institutional development as well as for an index of risk of expropriation and quality of the bureaucracy.
