    Notes: Abstract Growth rates of four Nautilus scrobiculatus Lightfoot and three N. pompilius Linnaeus captured in Papua New Guinea in 1985 were measured using a chronology based on the naturally occurring radionuclides 210Pb and 210Po. The age of the las septum in mature specimens of both species was more than one year, whereas the time of septal formation in a submature specimen of N. pompilius was ca 180 d. The 210Po/210Pb method was also used to determine the growth rates of four immature N. pompilius captured in the Philippines in 1983 before and after introduction into an aquarium. Introduction into the aquarium was marked by a dramatic decrease in the activity of 210Pb of the septa, the formation of a black line on the exterior of the shell, and a reduction in the spacing of adjacent septa in two specimens. Based on the number of septa formed in the aquarium, the average time of septal formation ranged from 50 to 80 d. These estimates were consistent with those calculated from the 210Po/210Pb activity ratios of the septa that formed in the aquarium, thus providing a check on the radiometric method. The average time of septal formation just prior to introduction into the aquarium appears, within the uncertainty of the radioactive measurements, to have been similar to that in the aquarium, indicating no dramatic alteration in the growth rate of these specimens.

    Notes: Abstract Ultrathin films, bcc Fe(001) on Ag(001), fcc Fe(001) on Cu(001) and Fe/Ni(001) bilayers on Ag, were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. A wide range of surface science tools were employed to establish the quality of epitaxial growth. Ferromagnetic resonance and Brillouin light scattering were used to extract the magnetic properties. Emphasis was placed on the study of magnetic anisotropies. Large uniaxial anisotropies with easy axis perpendicular to the film surface were observed in all ultrathin structures studied. These anisotropies were particularly strong in fcc Fe and bcc Fe films. In sufficiently thin samples the saturation magnetization was oriented perpendicularly to the film surface in the absence of an applied field. It has been demonstrated that in bcc Fe films the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy originates at the film interfaces. In situ measurements indentified the strength of the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy constant at the Fe/vacuum, Fe/Ag and Fe/Au interfaces asK us = 0.96, 0.63, and 0.3 ergs/cm2 respectively. The surface anisotropies deduced for [bulk Fe/noble metal] interfaces are in good agreement with the values obtained from ultrathin films. Hence the perpendicular surface ansiotropies originate in the broken symmetry at abrupt interfaces. An observed decrease in the cubic anisotropy in bcc Fe ultrathin films has been explained by the presence of a weak 4th order in-plane surface anisotropy,K 1∥S=0.012 ergs/cm2. Fe/Ni bilayers were also investigated. Ni grew in the pure bcc structure for the first 3–6 ML and then transformed to a new structure which exhibited unique magnetic properties. Transformed ultrathin bilayers possessed large inplane 4th order anisotropies far surpassing those observed in bulk Fe and Ni. The large 4th order anisotropies originate in crystallographic defects formed during the Ni lattice transformation.

    Notes: Angular resolved Auger electron studies were carried out for Fe whisker/Cr(001) interfaces which were prepared at 100, 180, 246, and 296 °C. The Cr atoms penetrate progressively into the second (counting from the surface) atomic layer at 100, 180, and 246 °C. At 296 °C the Cr atoms enter the third atomic layer. No noticeable fraction of the Cr atoms was found in the fourth atomic layer. The exchange coupling was studied in Fe whisker/Cr/Fe(001) films which were grown in a nearly perfect layer by layer mode. Magneto-optic Kerr effect and Brillouin light scattering measurements showed that the measured change in the phase of the short wavelength oscillations, the presence of a slowly varying exchange coupling bias, and the small measured values of exchange coupling are caused by the same mechanism: interface alloying. The exchange coupling in Fe whisker/Cr/nFe specimens, for n=10, 20, 30, and 40 ML, showed no obvious dependence on the Fe layer thickness. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Brillouin light-scattering experiments have been done at various angles of incidence, θ, for four specimens prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy. The specimens were single ultrathin films of Fe deposited on single-crystal Ag substrates. Dependence of magnon frequency on θ is easily resolvable in all specimens. We find that the magnitude of this dependence is in good agreement with a theoretical calculation that takes into account magnetic anisotropies, dipole-dipole, and exchange interactions. Our results imply that magnetic excitations in these specimens are correlated over distances of at least 5000 A(ring).

    Notes: Slonczewski recently proposed a model for the exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers separated by a nonferromagnetic spacer based on the concept of "loose spins.'' "Loose spins'' contribute to the total exchange energy. We have studied the role of "loose spins'' in bcc Fe/Cu/Fe(001) structures. bcc Fe/Cu/Fe(001) trilayers deposited at room temperature were investigated extensively in our previous studies. In our "loose spin'' studies, the Fe was added inside the Cu interlayer. Several structures were atomically engineered in order to test the behavior of "loose spins:'' One additional atomic layer of an (Fe+Cu) alloy were located in appropriate positions in a Cu spacer. The bilinear and biquadratic exchange coupling in the above structures was quantitatively studied with FMR in the temperature range 77–370 K and with MOKE at RT.

    Notes: The exchange coupling through nonmagnetic metallic interlayers is described by bilinear and biquadratic exchange coupling terms. In simple metals such as Cu(001) and Ag(001), the bilinear exchange coupling exhibits strong short wavelength oscillations (∼2 ML). The exchange coupling through non ferromagnetic interlayers is strongly affected by the interface roughness. Realistic interfaces consist of finite atomic terraces that result in variations of the interlayer thickness. Slonczewski showed that in this case the biquadratic exchange term can be produced by frustration of local magnetic moments. Recent band structure calculations showed that the biquadratic exchange coupling can be intrinsic. In this case its strength is usually found to be significantly weaker than that of bilinear coupling. The temperature dependence of biquadratic exchange coupling is expected to be different for the Slonczewski and intrinsic mechanisms. The intrinsic biquadratic exchange coupling is expected to vary with temperature faster than that predicted by the Slonczewski mechanism. In the present studies using the FMR and MOKE techniques we have investigated extensively the temperature dependence of the bilinear and biquadratic exchange coupling in Fe/Cu/Fe and Fe/Ag/Fe(001) structures. The quantitative studies of the exchange coupling were carried out in the temperature range 77–400 K. By growing the first Fe layer at various substrate temperatures one can prepare samples possessing interfaces with a variable atomic terrace width at the Fe/Cu, Ag interface. That way one can control the strength of the biquadratic exchange coupling. Two limits were investigated: (a) The strength of the biquadratic term in the exchange coupling was much smaller (10%) compared to the bilinear term; (b) the strength of the biquadratic term was comparable to the bilinear exchange coupling. The results are discussed within the framework of existing theories.
