    Notes: Summary We have partially characterized the specificity of serum lectins from the scorpionVaejovis spinigerus Wood. Agglutination, crossed-absorption and hemagglutination-inhibition patterns were similar but not identical to serum lectins from other members from the family Vaejovidae, and different from the Buthidae species studied so far.V. spinigerus serum lectins bind sialic acids and sialoconjugates, but also bind 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate, uronic acids and N-acylaminosugars, all substances present in bacterial cell walls suggesting that they might be involved in defense functions.

    Notes: Abstract Two children aged 18 and 30 months presented with severe renovascular hypertensio. Initially, surgical intervention was postponed because of the patients' young age. Adequate control of the hypertension and reversal of its sequelae were achieved with aggressive medical management. At present, both patients, aged 9 and 12 years respectively, have discontinued all medication, have achieved normal growth, are normotensive and have normal renal function.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si riconsidera la descrizione di processi dinamici in fluidi classici densi per mezzo di automodi efficaci. Questi automodi rappresentano effettivamente il comportamento dinamico (microscopico) del fluido su scala molecolare per quanto riguarda le funzioni di correlazione temporale o i fattori di struttura dinamica, che sono osservati alla luce, nel neutrone e negli esperimenti al computer. Questi automodi efficaci possono essere determinati sia teoricamente dalla teoria idrodinamica o cinetica, sia sperimentalmente da un adattamento esponenziale o lorentziano alle funzioni di correlazioni osservate. Si considera anche l'importanza di questi modi per le miscele di fluidi e le sospensioni colloidali.
    Abstract: Резюме Мы анализируем описание динамических процессов в плотных классических жидкостях с помошью зффективных собственных мод. Эти собственные моды зффективно представляют (микроскопическое) динамическое поведение жидкости на молекулярном уровне, поскольку дело идет о временных корреляционных функциях или динамических структурных факторах, которые измеряются в зкспериментах по рассянию света, нейтронов или в компьюторных экспериментах. Эти эффективные собственные моды могут быть определены либо теоретически из гидродинамики или из кинетической теории, либо зкспериментально из экспоненциальной или Лоренцесой подгонки наблюденных корреляционных функций. Мы также рассматриваем возможность использования этих мод для описания смесей жидкостей и коллоидных суспензий.
    Notes: Summary We review the description of dynamical processes in dense classical fluids by means of effective eigenmodes. These eigenmodes effectively represent the (microscopic) dynamical behaviour of the fluid on the molecular scale as far as time correlation functions or dynamic structure factors are concerned, that are observed in light, neutron or computer experiments. These effective eigenmodes can be determined either theoretically from hydrodynamic or kinetic theory or experimentally from an exponential or Lorentzian fit to observed correlation functions. We also consider the relevance of these modes for fluid mixtures and colloidal suspensions.

    Notes: Using the revised Enskog theory we derive equations for the thermal diffusion ratios kTi and thermal diffusion factors αij of multicomponent hard-sphere mixtures for systems in mechanical equilibrium. The first ten Enskog approximations to the thermal diffusion factor αij[N] (N=1,2,...,10) are evaluated numerically for a variety of system parameter choices appropriate to binary and ternary mixtures. We find that the first Enskog approximation does not vanish; the sequence of Enskog approximations converges most rapidly when the mass of the spheres are nearly equal. The seventh Enskog approximation was estimated to lie within about 1% of the exact value for all choices of system parameters. A comprehensive numerical study of the properties of the thermal diffusion factor for binary mixtures is given, including special mixtures such as the dusty gas, the Lorentz, quasi-Lorentz and Rayleigh gases, and isotopic mixtures. Particular emphasis is placed on showing how the properties of α12 change as the density is increased. The most striking difference between the low-density (Boltzmann) and high-density values for α12 is that the region of the mass ratio—diameter ratio plane for which α12 is either strictly positive or negative, as a function of composition, is much smaller at high densities. Also, at higher densities α12 is not a monotonic function of the mole fraction. For ternary mixtures in which two of the components are isotopes we show how the properties of the third component affect the separation of the two isotopes.

    Notes: The regulated propagator G'ε(ξ,ξ') is considered for points ξ and ξ' on the two-dimensional flat torus and with a regularization analogous to the proper-time method with cut-off ε. The inequivalent tori are labeled by a modular parameter τ. In this regularization, the propagator has an expansion in eigenmodes which is a particular Jacobi–Riemann function with beautiful properties and which can be transformed to an integral representation by a Sommerfeld–Watson method. This latter method allows one to derive exact analytic expressions in several domains of the parameters ||ξ−ξ'||, ε, and of the parameter τ. For generic value of τI≡Im(τ) and small value of the cut-off ε we recover the known results relative to short-distance phenomena. At large value of τI(approximately-equal-to)O(cst/4πε), the propagator diverges as τI and the coefficient is computed. A general formula for the Weyl variation of the propagator is derived; again the behavior of the Weyl variation at fixed τI is reproduced, while the behavior at large τI is novel. As a result we find that to O((square root of)1/τI) the Weyl variation of the propagator at large τI is local in the Weyl variation δcursive-phi(ξ).

    Notes: The effect of oxygen retained on beet powder on the stability of betanine and vulgaxanthine I was studied at 35°C as a function of aw (“dry”-0.75). moisture content, added aluminium oxide powder and headspace gases (N2, air). Limited degradation was observed under N2 or air and aw± 0.41. Deterioration was accelerated at aw± 0.52 and the presence of added Al2O3. This was interpreted as a lack of liquid phase mobility which retarded the reaction up to ± 0.5 aw. Above 0.5 aw the transition in the mechanism was related to the concentration of the dissolved 02 in the liquid phase, which controlled the deterioration rate. The latter was strongly affected by the added Al2O3. In the presence of aluminium oxide, the very fast pigment oxidation suggested a catalytic reaction.

    Notes: Data on the composition of Israeli orange juice, grapefruit juice, orange peel and grapefruit peel were analyzed. Significant differences were found mainly between the juice and peel in the content of isocitric acid, ash, minerals, total pectin, total flavonoids, chlorides, phosphates, chloramine-T number and arginine. The significance of these findings in detecting juice adulteration with peel extract solids is discussed. The chemical and amino acids characteristics of the citrus products analyzed may be used to establish guidelines required for detecting citrus juice adulteration.
