Notes: Abstract The osmo-ionoregulatory responses of sub-adult Port Jackson sharks, Heterodontus portusjacksoni (Meyer, 1793), and the stingaree Trygonoptera testacea (Müller and Henle, 1841), were investigated following the transfer from full-strength seawater (100% SW) to either 75 or 50% SW for up to 168 h. The plasma osmotic pressure was similarly reduced in both species and remained slightly hyper-osmotic to the diluted seawater after 168 h. The increase in the body weight of H.␣portusjacksoni transferred to diluted seawater was double that of T.testacea, with the greater haemodilution reflected by a short-term reduction in haematocrit and in haemoglobin concentration. The haemodilution exhibited by H. portusjacksoni also resulted in a greater reduction in plasma [Na], [Cl], [urea] and [trimethylamine oxide] compared with T. testacea. The ability of T. testacea to minimize body-weight gain in diluted seawater was most probably due to increased net water efflux. The persistent elevation in the body weight of both species, despite the apparent recovery of plasma-water volume, was indicative of elevated tissue water. Chronic exposure of H. portusjacksoni to 50% SW altered erythrocyte ion concentrations and plasma/erythrocyte ion ratios, which could have serious implications for cellular homeostasis, respiratory gas transport and acid-base status. The greater control of water and ionic status exhibited by T.testacea, compared with that of H.portusjacksoni, allows the stingarees to penetrate into the more dilute, upper estuarine waters.

Notes: The incidence and severity of muscle pains and changes in creatine kinase were assessed following administration of 1 mg.kg−1 suxamethonium either immediately or 2 min after induction of anaesthesia with propofol or thiopentone in patients undergoing elective dental and ophthalmic surgery. The incidence of muscle pains was 35 and 60% respectively in the groups given suxamethonium immediately and 2 min after propofol, and 35 and 55% when given immediately and 2 min after thiopentone, with no statistically significant differences among the groups. Creatine kinase levels increased in all the groups after operation with the least average increase in the group receiving suxamethonium immediately after propofol and the highest increase in the group receiving suxamethonium 2 min after thiopentone. There was no correlation between the incidence and severity of fasciculations, muscle pains and changes in creatine kinase within or between the groups. It is concluded that neither the induction agent nor the time between the induction agent and suxamethonium administration has any significant influence on the incidence of muscle pains or creatine kinase elevation following suxamethonium.

Notes: Abstract Diffusion processes in Al 2 O 3 scales formed on NiCrAl + Zr alloys were studied by the proton activation technique employing the 18 O isotope as a tracer. The 18 O profiles identified a zone of oxide penetration beneath the external scale. Both this subscale formation and the outer Al 2 O 3 scale thickness were shown by this technique to increase with Zr content in the alloy. Estimated k p 's from scale thicknesses were in agreement with gravimetric measurements for various Zr levels. Alternate exposures in O and 18 O revealed that oxygen inward transport was the primary growth mechanism. A qualitative analysis of these 18 O profiles indicated that the oxygen transport was primarily via short-circuit paths, such as grain boundaries.

Notes: Abstract This work focuses on the thermal oxidation of silicon near 1273 K using the double-tracer oxidation method. The results confirm that oxidation occurs by the transport of electrically neutral non-network oxygen through the interstitial space of the vitreous silica (ν-SiO2) scale. Simultaneously, self- (or isotopic-) diffusion occurs in the network, resulting in characteristic isotopic fraction distributions near the gas-scale interface. The self-diffusion coefficients calculated from these profiles agree with those reported for tracer diffusion in ν-SiO2, and the diffusion coefficient calculated from the scale growth is consistent with reported O2 permeation data. An important parameter that describes the double-oxidation behavior is the ratio of the value of Δ/√(D nt′),where Δ is the scale thickness grown during the second oxidation, Dn is the network self-diffusion coefficient for oxygen, and t′ is the time of the second oxidation.

Notes: Abstract Oxygen self-diffusion coefficients were measured in a 20K2O-20SrO-60SiO2 (wt%) glass above and below the glass transition temperature using the single spectrum proton activation analysis of oxygen-18 using the nuclear reaction 18O(p, α)15N. The α-particle spectrum recorded during proton irradiation is used to determine the 18O concentration profile. The self-diffusion coefficients, D, determined for the three diffusion times of about 22 h, 3 1/2 and 7 1/2 days were in good agreement within experimental error, except for the two lowest temperatures of the short-time run possibly because of the shallow depths of diffusion and surface exchange. In the temperature range 600 to 1000 K, D values with the relations, above the glass transition temperature D=7.6×1014 exp(−119 kcal/RT) cm2sec−1, and below the glass transition temperature D=1×10−12 exp(−10 kcal/RT) cm2sec−1, were obtained.

Notes: Summary Recent applications of preparative scale gel permeation chromatography are reviewed and examles of tyical performance are reviewed and examples of typical performance are discussed. In priciple, any separation which can be carried out on an analytical scale may have showen that there is little, if any, loss in resolution upon going to the larger size preparative columns compared with the analytical scale columns.
