Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition has been recently suggested to have retinoprotective actions in diabetic patients but the mechanism of this effect is not known. In vitro, angiotensin II stimulates expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a permeability-inducing and endothelial cell specific angiogenic factor which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy in humans and in experimental animals. We sought to determine the effects of ACE inhibition on retinal VEGF expression and permeability in experimental diabetic retinopathy.¶Methods. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and control animals were assigned at random to receive ACE inhibitor treatment or vehicle. At 24 weeks the retinal VEGF protein gene expression was assessed by northern blot analysis and in situ hybridisation. Retinal permeability to albumin was measured using a double isotope technique.¶Results. Experimental diabetes was associated with cell specific two to fourfold increase in retinal VEGF protein gene expression (p 〈 0.01) and a 2-fold increase in retinal vascular permeability to albumin (p 〈 0.01). The localization of VEGF expression in the retina was not altered in animals with experimental diabetes. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor treatment of diabetic rats reduced diabetes-associated changes in VEGF gene expression and vascular permeability.¶Conclusion/interpretation. These findings implicate the renin-angiotensin system in the VEGF overexpression and hyperpermeability which accompany diabetic retinopathy and provide a potential mechanism for the beneficial effects of ACE inhibition in diabetic retinal disease. Notes: It has previously been shown that stimulation of muscarinic m1 or m3 receptors can, by generating diacylglycerol (DAG) and activating protein kinase C (PKC), accelerate the breakdown of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) to form soluble, non-amyloidogenic peptides (APPs). This relationship has been demonstrated in human glioma and neuroblastoma cells as well as in transfected human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells and PC12 cells.1,2We now provide evidence that stimulation of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), which also are coupled to DAG and PKC, similarly accelerates processing of APP into non-amyloidogenic APPs in hippocampal neurons and cortical astrocytes derived from normal fetal rats. The mGluR antagonist, L(+)-2-amino-3-phosphonopropionic acid (L-AP3), and GF 109203X, an inhibitor of PKC, both blocked the release of APPs from hippocampal neurons and astrocytes evoked by glutamate receptor stimulation. Inasmuch as glutamatergic neurons in cortex and hippocampus are known to be damaged in Alzheimer's disease, our findings suggest that amyloid formation may be enhanced by the resulting glutamate deficiency and that selective mGluR agonists may be useful in facilitating synaptic efficacy and treating the disease.

Notes: An optimized current preamplifier, consisting of a shunt resistor followed by a high speed field-effect transistor input instrumentation amplifier, appears suitable for use in scanning tunneling microscopy. The preamplifier has a transimpedance of 100 MΩ, a measured 3 dB bandwidth of 200 kHz, low phase distortion, and excellent noise performance. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The mitotic index of pretreatment plaques of chronic psoriasis was determined before treatment with PUVA. There was a wide variation in mitotic indices in different patients.Treatment was given with UV-A 2 h after oral ingestion of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) two or three times per week, with increasing doses of UV-A. Patients were considered cleared if there was 95% clearing of all psoriatic plaques. There was no correlation between the mitotic index and the response to treatment, as measured by either the number of joules administered or the number of treatments until the lesions cleared. This suggests that the action of PUVA in psoriasis is not dependent on the amount of increase in epidermal proliferation.

Notes: Summary The surfaces of 32 encrusted urinary catheters were examined by scanning electron microscopy to investigate the association of bacteria with the encrusting deposits. Deposits consisted of struvite crystals surrounded by aggregates of very small crystallites of hydroxyapatite. Underneath these minerals there was a layer of closely packed bacteria. Impressions of bacteria were also observed in hydroxyapatite. Crystals were often engulfed by the bacterial layer, which thus appeared to bind the crystals to each other and to the catheter surface. This thick layer of bacteria associated with crystals may protect both the bacteria from antibiotics and the crystals from acidic bladder washout solutions intended to dissolve them. Furthermore, the existence of this sessile population explains why urease-producing bacteria are not invariably detected in the urine of patients with encrusted catheters. The observation of this bacterial layer (or “biofilm”) by scanning electron microscopy provided direct evidence for infection being implicated in catheter encrustation.

Notes: Summary Mid-shaft specimens were cut from latex catheters coated with a modified hydrogel, latex catheters coated with silicone elastomer, and 100% silicone catheters. These specimens were subjected to controlled in vitro encrustation conditions. During a test period of 11 weeks, there was no significant difference in the quantities of encrusting deposits formed on the three materials.

Notes: Abstract The ketones 3-pentanone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone, 5-methyl-3-hexanone, 4-methyl-3-hexanone, and the esters ethyl propanoate, 2-methylpropyl acetate, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, and 2-methylpropyl propanoate were identified as the only volatile organic constituents of the preorbital secretion of the klipspringer, Oreotragus oreotragus. These compounds are considerably more volatile than those found in the preorbital secretions of other antelopes belonging to the tribe Antelopini. More than 50% of the preorbital secretion consists of proteinaceous material, which probably acts as a controlled-release substance in retarding the evaporation of the volatile constituents of the secretion from territorial marks.

Notes: Abstract Photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of (NaCl)nNa− (n=1–13, except n=10) are reported. The observed electron energy spectra fall into three distinct types, reflecting different correlations between the two excess electrons and ions. Depending on the host clusters' structures, the experimental evidence indicates that the two excess electrons in these sodium chloride clusters could be spin paired, forming a bipolaron or a Na− anion. The two excess electrons could also be spin parallel, forming a double F-center state.
