    Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this work was to assess the influence of redox conditions on benzoate biodegradation coupled with oxygen and nitrate as electron acceptors. A benzoate-degrading, facultatively denitrifying bacterium was isolated from a sediment sample and was tentatively identified as Comamonas terrigena (strain J92-6). The experimental system was based on sand columns that were filled with liquid medium containing benzoate and nitrate. The columns were inoculated to provide a fixed biofilm on the sand. Conditions were created by aeration, dinitrogen-purging, and sodium sulfide amendment that comprised oxic, anoxic, and reduced (–375 mV) zones, respectively, at different depths of the columns. Anaerobic biodegradation of benzoate was nitrate-dependent and proceeded at all redox potential values ranging from +400 to –375 mV. Thus, benzoate degradation coupled with denitrification was not inhibited at low redox potentials characteristic of sulfate reduction and methanogenesis. The results demonstrate that the fixed biofilm column system can be successfully used to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on the biodegradation of benzoate, a central decomposition product of anaerobic, aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation.

    Notes: Abstract  The stimulatory effect of earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris L.) on soil microbial activity was studied under microcosm-controlled conditions. The hypothesis was tested that microbial stimulation observed in the presence of a soil invertebrate would be due to the utilization of additional nutritive substances (secretion and excretion products) that it provides. Changes in microbial activity were monitored by measuring simultaneously CO2 release and protozoan population density. The increase in CO2 released in the presence of earthworms was found to result from both earthworm respiration and enhanced microbial respiration. The stimulation of microbial activity was confirmed by a significant increase in protozoan population density, which was 3–19 times greater in the presence of earthworms. The respiratory rate of L. terrestris was estimated to be 53 μl O2 g–1 h–1. Earthworm respiration significantly correlated with individual earthworm weight, but there was no correlation between the increase in microbial respiration and earthworm weight. This finding does not support the hypothesis given above that enhanced microbial respiration is due to utilization of earthworm excreta. A new hypothesis that relationships between microbial activity and earthworms are not based on trophic links alone but also on catalytic mechanisms is proposed and discussed.

    Notes: A particular normalization for the set of basis elements {Γi} of the complex Clifford algebras C(p,q) is motivated and defined by demanding that the physical bispinor densities ρi=Ψ¯ΓiΨ be real. This condition, referred to here as Dirac normalization, also necessitates the introduction of the spinor metric γ, and the solution of the metric conditions is given for arbitrary (p,q); when N=p+q is even the metric is unique, and when N is odd there are two distinct metrics. Then the Dirac normalization preserving automorphism group of the basis is explored. This is also the group of transformations leaving the spinor metric invariant. In particular, the physically important cases of the Lorentz, Poincaré, and conformal groups are sought as subgroups of the automorphism group. As expected, it is found that the Lorentz group is always contained in the automorphism group. However, it is found that the Poincaré and conformal groups are contained only in the cases where N is even and q is odd. Furthermore, when N is odd these groups may be found in the full isomorphism group, but only for one of the two possible spinor metrics. Possible physical implications of these results are discussed.

    Notes: The geometric properties of Dirac spinor fields defined over even-dimensional space-time are explored with the aim of formulating the associated nonlinear sigma models. A spinor field Ψ may be uniquely reconstructed from the real bispinor densities ρi=Ψ¯ΓiΨ, apart from an overall phase, so that the ρi constitute an alternate representation of the physical information contained in Ψ. For space-time of dimension N=2n, the corresponding Dirac spinor has D=2n complex components, and the bispinor densities satisfy a system of (D−1)2 homogeneous quadratic algebraic equations. The basis elements of the Clifford algebra {Γi} span a D2=2N -dimensional space whose Cartan metric is flat pseudo-Riemannian; the bispinor densities reside in the (2D−1)-dimensional curved subspace induced as an embedding by the algebraic constraints. The explicit geometric structure of the bispinor spaces are examined and found to be generalizations of Robertson–Walker space. In particular, the line element may be written as dS2=D dσ 2+σ 2 dΩ2, where σ=Ψ¯Ψ is the scalar density and dΩ is the line element for the homogeneous space: SU(D/2,D/2)/S(U(1)⊗U(D/2−1,D/2)).

    Notes: SUMMARY: The changes in polygalacturonase (PG) activity during ripening and the relationship between its activity and the quality of Deglet Noor dates were studied. PG activity, which was virtually absent at the green stage, began to develop as maturity progressed. The greatest part of the development occurred at the late red stage and activity reached its maximum when the fruits commenced softening. Among the four grades of dates used in this study the activity was highest with natural, followed by waxy, number 1 dry and number 2 dry grades. The dates contained 0.9-1.3 units of PG per g of fresh tissue. The results of chemical and physical analyses related to the texture are also reported.
