    Notes: Abstract The intermediate coupling model of odd nuclei, where a nucleon is coupled to the surface vibration of an even system, has been successfully used in explaining various nuclear properties. In this paper, it is pointed out that a similar picture is applicable to improve the BCS approximation for seniority-one states in the pairing force model by considering coupling of a quasi-particle to the pairing normal modes. It is shown that this model is, in part, equivalent to the variational approach which takes the blocking effect into account. Several models are compared numerically.

    Notes: Abstract The kernel 1/¦r-r′¦=1/y in the direct term of the average Coulomb potential of the nuclear Hartree-Fock model is approximated by a sum of gaussians iny. For 0.5≦y≦30 Fm, a sixteen term expression is found such the direct Coulomb energy is obtained to one part in 103. The exchange Coulomb potential is estimated in the statistical model. Applications of these accurate and practical approximations to fission calculations are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We study heavy ion collisions at bombarding energiesE LAB/n∼ 20–200 MeV within the three-dimensional NFD- and TDHF-models. A surprisingly good agreement between the results of the different models is found: The comparison phenomena occuring at these bombarding energies are quantitatively similar as a function of the bombarding energy as well as for various impact parameters. The formation of abnormal superdense nuclear matter (“density isomers”) is investigated in a schematic model for the nuclear equation of state. Again we find very similar results in the two models. Density isomers can be formed in high energy heavy ion collisions above a critical bombarding energy and below a critical impact parameter, which both depend on the details of the nuclear equation of state. Cross sections for the formation of density isomers are presented. An experiment for the detection of abnormal nuclear matter in fast, central heavy ion collisions is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract The time dependent Hartee-Fock-BCS code used to study118Pd+118Pd has been extended to study238U +238U at 7.5 MeV/A, in three dimensions, in order to look for the fission of the residual nuclei. Two impact parameters corresponding toL in=150,300 ħ are considered. 69 orbits are included in the effective charge quartet model. The energy loss and deflection angle are compatible with the available data and correspond to cases where fission of the residual system is observed experimentally. No fast fission of the final U fragment is predicted, but new details about clutching time, interaction times, dissipation times and other properties of the reaction mechanism such as neck dynamics, are obtained. No surface vibrations are seen.

    Notes: Abstract The time dependent Hartree Fock theory (TDHF) is generalized by incorporating 2p-2h correlations into the TDHF Slater determinant in order to improve the description of two-body observables. To this end a time dependent RPA theory (TDRPA) is formulated using the quasi boson approximation. The approach turns out to be readily applicable requiring only minor changes in the present time TDHF codes. The theory is exemplified by considering the spreading width of the fragment particle number in a nucleus-nucleus collision. The TDRPA states are furthermore used to formulate a scattering theory for heavy ion collisions which incorporates the quantum corrections of orderh 2 by means of a gaussian parametrization of the scattering form factor.

    Notes: Abstract We propose an iterative procedure for the numerical evolution of Dirac equation. It is a fast and stable version of the coordinate-space predictor-corrector method and can be extended to (3+1) dimensions for the relativistic mean-field calculation of heavy-ion collisions. A detailed example is worked out for the case of the Bottcher-Strayer pair production mechanism in (1+1) dimensions.

    Notes: Abstract We present a fast and efficient constrained Hartree-Fock iteration scheme which constraints the complete density distribution to remain constant. The scheme is particularly suited to a coordinate- or momentum-space representation. The technique is applied to separate the collective and the internal energy in a propagating TDHF state. We study the behavior of these two energies in an16O+16O collision.

    Notes: Abstract We take up a relativistic mean-field model consisting out of nucleons coupled to a scalar and a vector meson. We solve the corresponding time-dependent mean-field equations on a three-dimensional grid. Results for16O +16O scattering at various energies and various impact parameters show significant differences with conventional TDHF calculations. We see sidewards collective flow similar as in fluid dynamics and in experiment. We observe complete spallation and remarked oscillations of the meson fields.

    Notes: Abstract Starting from simple topological arguments due to Dirac on the classical rotational properties of extended rigid bodies, we abstract the concept of a finite-size spinor (FSS). The FSS is a concept distinct from both point spinors (e.g., electrons) and composite spinors (e.g., nuclei), and suggests a new model for baryons. The FSS offers a natural explanation of “threeness” for the quarks, excludes the existence of free quarks, denies the operational definition of quark spin statistics, and, moreover, leads to the dual model of hadronic interactions.
