Recent years have witnessed a growing demand for economical and energy efficient designs of electrical machines and their reliability in operation. Improved performance prediction at the design stage helps achieve some or all of these objectives in a cost effective and efficient manner. With the advent of digital computers, it has become possible to achieve this goal with a high degree of accuracy and minimal turn around time. A design study for tradeoffs of cost versus efficiency and reliability requires the use of sophisticated computational tools. Traditionally computer programs have been designed with a view to provide the user multiple options in terms of analyses, data manipulation, and post-processing of results. These codes have tended to be large and have been generally implemented in a batch mode with long turn around times. In this paper, an alternative approach to the traditional computer analysis of electric machines is presented using an interactive user-friendly software package. A finite element electromagnetic analysis program is considered, as it is one of the more significant and difficult to implement codes required frequently for design use. The advantages of interactive and generalized engineering software for the application mentioned above are examined. The detailed steps of engineering design analysis of a rotating electrical machine carried out with the help of an integrated software is described.
