Notes: SYNOPSIS. Paramecium multimicronucleatum has been cultured for 20 years on a medium of salts, vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, ribosides, and stigmasterol plus a little nondialyzable fraction (NDF) of baker's yeast. Fractionations of NDF identified 2 essentials: (a) in a fraction 〈 100,000 daltons which contained much protein and replaceable by ovalbumin and (b) in a fraction of 〈 300,000 daltons; this fraction contained much polysaccharide, replaceable by glycogen, which is 〉 300,000 daltons. For 2 years now P. multimicronucleatum has grown well with ovalbumin and glycogen replacing NDF. Besides ovalbumin, concanavalin A satisfies the protein requirement; this lectin attaches to sugar residues in glycogen. Studies with a fluorescent dye, PGA-1A, a stilbene derivative, provides further evidence for the polysaccharide requirement. This dye attaches to polysaccharides; when added to glycogen, and this in turn is added to a culture containing ovalbumin, fluorescent blue vacuoles appear within 2–3 h. When dye + glycogen were added to a culture without ovalbumin, no fluorescent vacuoles were found. A protein appears involved in formation of food vacuoles; this fits the pattern for endocytosis described in recent reviews. Besides glycogen, mannan gave good growth. Dextrin and amylopectin gave only fair growth through 7 serial transfers; glucose, maltose and amylose did not sustain growth. Strain 51 of P. tetratrelia, which grows well in NDF medium, grows well when NDF is replaced with ovalbumin and glycogen.

Notes: Tests of the electron beam injector for the Boeing/Los Alamos Average Power Laser Experiment have demonstrated first time operation of a photocathode radio frequency gun accelerator at 25% duty factor, exceeding previous photocathode operating parameters by three orders of magnitude. The macropulse format was 30 Hz and 8.3 ms with a micropulse frequency of 27 MHz. Average beam currents of up to 32 mA have been accelerated to 5 MeV for an average beam power of 160 kW. The macropulse peak current was 128 mA. The 32 mA average beam current exceeds previous cathode performance by a factor of 1000. Emittance measurements demonstrate excellent electron beam quality.

Notes: We report a monolithic coupled-resonator vertical-cavity laser with an ion-implanted top cavity and a selectively oxidized bottom cavity which exhibits single fundamental-mode operation. The output powers are as high as 6.1 mW with side mode suppression ratios greater than 30 dB. The sizes of the implant and oxide current apertures are shown to be important for demonstrating the required selectivity for the fundamental lasing mode. With a fixed bias current on the implant cavity and increasing oxide cavity current, mode switching from single-mode operation to multimode operation and back to single-mode operation was observed. The intensities of the fundamental and first transverse modes were calculated by solving a set of multimode rate equations. The calculation indicates that the observed mode switching can be identified with changes in the optical length of the oxide cavity with increasing pump current. The observed mode dynamics are unique to coupled-resonator vertical-cavity lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Installation of the HIBP on ATF began in the summer of 1988. All of the major hardware components have now been installed. The initial operation of the diagnostic has begun amid the final stages of testing and control system integration. The existence of significant magnetic fields and gradients outside of the main plasma volume and fully three-dimensional particle trajectories have raised several interesting issues during the design, assembly, alignment, and operation of the beamline and analyzer. The diagnostic must function in a challenging environment. It must perform satisfactorily despite electrical interference from several nearby sources, pressure excursions caused by gas puffing, and UV/plasma loading.

Notes: Today's students are generally computer literate and have high expectations of university information technology resources. Most United Kingdom medical schools now provide networked computers for learning, research, communication and accessing the worldwide web. We have exploited these advances to augment and improve the teaching of peri-operative medicine and anaesthesia to medical students in our university, who are taught in several hospitals over a wide geographical area. Course material such as departmental induction information, lecture notes and assessment sheets can be accessed online, contributing to the smooth running of the course. Streamed videos and simulations allow students to familiarise themselves with common practical procedures in advance. Development of a web-based end of course assessment has resulted in substantially less administration and bureaucracy for course organisers and proved to be a valuable research tool. Students' and teachers' opinions of the new course structure have been overwhelmingly positive.

Notes: Abstract Fatty infiltration of the liver may occur in healthy children. The ultrasonographic, CT, and MRI findings are identical to those already described in the adult population. Diffuse or focal fatty infiltration of the liver is seen in adults with ethanol abuse, diabetes, obesity, high-dose steroids, and hyperlipidemia and has also been described in otherwise healthy adults [1]. The radiographic signs of diffuse fatty liver are well known [2], but focal fatty infiltration of the liver (FFIL) has been confused with abnormalities such as hepatic metastases in the adult population [3]. In the pediatric population, FFIL has not been previously described in normal children.

Notes: Abstract: Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) assessment at the calcaneus has been found to be a safe and reliable method for evaluating skeletal status. The present study aimed at evaluating the precision of the Sahara bone ultrasound densitometer and to determine the normative QUS data in healthy southern Chinese women. Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), speed of sound (SOS) and qualitative ultrasound index (QUI) were determined. The long-term in vitro precision of the Sahara machine over 6 months was 4.6% for BUA and 0.39% for SOS. The short-term in vivo precision was 3.2 ± 1.3% for BUA, 0.3 ± 0.2% for SOS and 1.8 ± 1.0% for QUI. The standardized precision for BUA, SOS and QUI was 4.4, 3.8 and 2.2 respectively. The normative data were determined in 1086 healthy subjects. Postmenopausal women had significantly lower BUA, SOS and QUI levels than the premenopausal women. Significant negative correlations were observed between QUS indices and age. Bone mineral density (BMD) assessments was performed on 349 of these subjects. BUA correlated significantly with lumbar spine BMD (r; = 0.326) and femoral neck BMD (r= 0.395). Similar correlations were observed between SOS, QUI and BMD, with r values ranging between 0.446 to 0.522. Despite the fact that Chinese women have significantly lower BMD values than Caucasian women, the mean BUA values for pre- and postmenopausal Chinese women (73 ± 18 and 59 ± 18 dB/MHz respectively) were almost the same as those reported for Caucasian womeo. These normative data will be useful in the assessment of southern Chinese women with fracture risk.

Notes: Abstract: Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is emerging as a simple, inexpensive and noninvasive method for assessing bone quality and assessing fracture risk. We assessed the usefulness of a contact calcaneal ultrasonometer by studying normal premenopausal women (group I, n= 53), normal postmenopausal women (group II, n= 198), and osteoporotic women without (group III, n= 141) and with vertebral fractures (group IV, n= 53). The osteoporotic subjects had a T-score of the spine or hip neck bone mineral density (BMD) 〈−2.5 based on the local Chinese peak young mean values. When compared with postmenopausal controls, mean broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), speed of sound (SOS), and quantitative ultrasound index (QUI) were 26%, 2.1% and 25% lower in women with vertebral fractures (p all 〈0.005). The correlation coefficients between QUS parameters and BMD of the spine and hip ranged between 0.4 and 0.5. The ability of the QUS to discriminate between patients groups was determined based on the mean value of normal premenopausal women in group I. The mean T-score for women with fractures was −2.87 ± 1.02 for BUA, −2.54 ± 0.79 for SOS, −3.17 ± 0.70 for QUI, −2.65 ± 0.86 for L2–4 BMD and −2.53 ± 0.66 for hip neck BMD. After adjustment for age and body mass index, the odds ratio of vertebral fracture was 1.71 (95% CI 1.2–2.6) for each 1 SD reduction in BUA, 2.72 (1.3–5.3) for SOS, 2.58 (1.4–4.6) for QUI, 2.33 (1.6–3.3) for L2–4 BMD, 2.09 (1.37–3.20) for femoral neck BMD and 1.88 (1.34–2.92) for total hip BMD. The association between the QUS parameters and vertebral fracture risk persisted even adjustment for BMD. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for BUA for vertebral fracture was 0.92, for SOS, QUI, L2–4 BMD and femoral neck BMD was 0.95, and for total hip was 0.91.
