Notes: Abstract Eleven cores were collected from the Cauvery basin. Radiometric dates were used to determine modern sediment accumulation rates. Sediment accumulation rates ranged from 0.4 to 4 mm yr−. Heavy metal concentration decreases with the increase of depth. The heavy metal concentrations at certain depths are attributed to the irregular input of metals and their remobilization. Heavy metal accumulations have been computed using sediment accumulation rates, and accumulation rates show an additional anthropogenic input of metals and sediments in the recent past. Factor analysis and correlation analysis show the diverse source and accumulation mechanism influencing the metal distribution in the basin.

Notes: Abstract  The study of water chemistry and sediment core samples from Udaisagar lake in Rajasthan has revealed high phosphate contents; 186 and 236 μg/l in surface and sub-surface waters and in core samples 0.157 wt % P2O5, low D.O. 4.61 and 3.50 mg/l on average in surface and depth waters and high E.C. 1316 and 1395 μs/cm and higher sedimentation rate 8.90 mm/year in this lake compared to other lakes in the vicinity. The enormous and wide-spread growth of algal bloom in lake water and Ahar river and occasional fish mortality are indications of eutrophic conditions prevailing in the lake. Such a situation is developing due to the discharge of pollutants from phosphorite mines, chemical factories, distillary, sewage and domestic waste from settlements, hotels throughout the length of River Ahar which during its journey receives and finally discharges pollution in this lake. This renders the water unhygenic for human consumption and deleterious to aquatic life.

Notes: Abstract. Demonstration of peritoneopleural communication in patients with cirrhotic ascites has an important impact on treatment planning. We studied 12 such patients and found presence of peritoneopleural communication in five. Two had bilateral, one right-side and two left-side, pleural effusion. Pleural fluid protein content was less than 2 g/dL in all patients.

Notes: Abstract The rate of sedimentation and the source of sediments in the lake basins of Nainital region, Kumaun Himalaya, have been estimated employing210Pb and210Ra methods. This has yielded a rate of sedimentation of 11.5, 4.70, 3.72, and 3.00 mm/yr in Nainital, Bhimtal, Naukuchiyatal, and Sattal lakes, respectively. The higher rate of sedimentation in Nainital lake, compared to other lakes, is related to faster erosion in the catchment aided by greater anthropogenic activity, while the slowest rate in Sattal lake is due to less erosion and more input of soil-derived material involving a slow rate of accumulation.

Notes: Abstract The water chemistry of Pichola lake revealed that it is dominated by Na and HCO3. The lake water chemistry strongly reflects the dominance of continental weathering aided by anthropogenic activity, such as tourist influx, developmental activities in the catchment area, and disposal of untreated municipal and domestic sewage into the lake basin. The supply of major ions is mainly through weathering of the silicate rock exposed in the drainage basin and the contribution from saline and alkaline soils/groundwater because of the semiarid conditions of the region. The increase in phosphate loading and consequent depletion of silica suggests biological consumption of the latter. The observed chemical data of Pichola lake was used to predict the mineral assemblages in the carbonate and aluminosilicate system. It demonstrates that calcite and dolomite are the possible minerals that are in equilibrium with the lake water system and that the lake water chemistry is in the range of stability of kaolinite.

Notes: Abstract Sediment accumulation rates have been determined in Udai Sagar, Fateh Sagar and Pichola lakes, which lie in the arid climatic zone, using the210Pb method. The rate of sedimentation estimated in these lakes is 8.9, 3.42, and 2.80 mm/yr, respectively. River inflow, mining activity, and lithology contribute to controling the sediment deposition pattern in Udai Sagar Lake, whereas in Fateh Sagar and Pichola lakes, anthropogenic activity and erosion of loosely bound terrigenous material through wave action and varying lithology are the major contributors. Furthermore, a contribution from atmospheric fallout has not been ruled out due to occurrence of frequent duststorms, owing to strong wind conditions aided by barren hills devoid of vegetation as well as dumping of mining wastes in the area. The higher TDS and lower sedimentation rate in Pichola Lake compared to Fateh Sagar are due to the limestone lithology and better maintenance in the former, such as construction of parks, graveled roads, etc., to check the flow of silt into the lake. Fluctuations in metal content, for example, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Sr, and sedimentation rates are due to the variation in the sediment input at different time intervals.

Notes: The effect of heat treatment on minority carrier surface recombination velocity in polycrystalline silicon samples has been examined in the temperature range (600–900 °C) using the electron-beam induced-current mode of a scanning electron microscope. Minority carrier trap center density, calculated from minority carrier surface recombination velocity data, varying from 8.9×1011 to 6.37×1013 cm−2 have been measured. A finite variation in the minority carrier trap center density indicates that metallic impurities diffuse to the surface from the bulk of the sample. The activation energy of impurity atom diffusion is found to be 1.1±0.1 eV.

Notes: Direct preparation of high coercivity gamma iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3) thin films by chemical vapor pyrolysis techniques have been described. Films deposited at temperatures above 500 °C have the γ- and those deposited below 500 °C have the α-Fe2O3 phase. Gas phase reactions leading to oxygen deficiency in the vicinity of substrate and consequently controlled in situ oxidation of Fe3O4 appear responsible for direct growth of the γ-Fe2O3 film. Magnetic properties of these films are optimized by adding cobalt. High coercivity values of 3 kOe for directly deposited γ-Fe2O3 films containing 6 at. % of cobalt are obtained along with reasonable values of remanence ≈2.8 kG and squareness ratio of 0.83. These values are considerably superior for magnetic recording in comparison to those for γ-Fe2O3 films obtained by reduction and reoxidation of α-Fe2O3 films.

Notes: High-transport critical-current density Jc is essential for major bulk applications of the high-Tc superconductors. The critical temperature Tc of the 2212 Ag sheathed tapes was found to increase by quenching the samples, but the transport critical-current density Jc for a slow-cooled sample was higher at low temperature. Jc as well as its temperature dependence was found to be influenced by the heat treatments, i.e., whether the sample was quenched or slow cooled after the sintering heat treatment. The zero-field Jc was found to be quadratic in 1-T/Tc for the slow-cooled sample, while a linear dependence was observed for the quenched sample. These results are explained in terms of the weak-link structure.

Notes: A low pressure metalo-organic chemical vapor deposition (LPMOCVD) technique to form Co2+ and Ce4+ doped yttrium iron garnet (Y3−xCexFe5−xCoxO12: Co,Ce:YIG) films is described. A large concentration of Co2+ doping with x=0.3–0.7 results in uniaxial anisotropy perpendicular to the plane of the film with high coercivity values and sufficiently high saturation magnetization values. This has been possible by an alternate doping scheme where commonly used compensator, Ge4+ at Fe3+ sites has been replaced by a new compensator Ce4+ at Y3+ sites in the Co-doped YIG films. The structural and compositional aspect of stabilized garnet phase in Co2+,Ce4+:YIG thin films and optical, thermomagnetic and magnetic hysteresis properties are presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
