Notes: Abstract The output from a stabilized, tunable single-mode laser is split into two beams which cross the molecular beam perpendicularly and at an angle of β to the beam axis. Tuning the laser frequency across the unshifted and Doppler-shifted absorption profile of the molecular transition yileds the velocity distribution of the molecules in the beam for individual quantum states. The internal state distribution among vibrational and rotational levels in the beam can be determined by comparing the fluorescence simultaneously induced in the beam and in a cell with molecules in thermal equilibrium.

Notes: Abstract The experimentally obtained accuracy and principal limitations of laser wavelength meters based on two different interferometric designs are discussed. Methods of calibrating these instruments and some experiments for testing their accuracy are presented. Finally, a comparison is given between different kinds of Lambda meters.

Notes: Abstract The output beam of a continuously tunable GaA1As-diode laser with external cavity is phase-modulated at 800 MHz in an electrooptic LiTaO3 crystal. The amplitude of the rf voltage applied to the EOM is modulated at 80 kHz in order to allow lock-in detection. Using a multipass absorption cell the detection limit of the absorption coefficient α could be pushed down to αmin ≧2 × 10−10 cm2212;1. The sensitivity of the techique is demonstrated by examples of overtone transitions in C2H2 and H2O vapor.

Notes: More than 8000 completely resolved rotational lines in the E 1Σ+u →X 1Σ+g, E 1Σ+g →(2)1Σ+g, E 1Σ+u →(1)1Πg, E 1Σ+u →(3)1Σ+g, D 1Σ+u →(2)1Σ+g, C 1Σu →X 1Σ+g, and D 1Σ+u →X 1Σ+g transitions of Cs2 have been accurately measured with the techniques of Fourier transform spectroscopy, Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy, and optical optical double resonance. The wave numbers of all these rotational lines were determined with an accuracy of 1 to 5×10−3 cm−1. A thorough and simultaneous analysis of all the measured data yields molecular constants, potential energy curves, and dissociation energies for six different excited electronic states of the Cs2 molecule.

Notes: Highly excited Rydberg states of 7Li2 have been measured by two-step excitation with two narrow band pulsed dye lasers in a collimated lithium beam. A complex many-line two-photon ionization spectrum has been observed which consists of sharp lines whose natural widths are smaller than the laser line width (0.03 cm−1). The spectrum has been analyzed with the help of multichannel quantum defect theory. Radial electronic dipole transition moments for the second excitation step were calculated and provided the key to the analysis. The spectra correspond to the excitation of s and d Rydberg series with n∼18–40. The series are affected by strong rotational l uncoupling as well as electronic s–d mixing. The analysis yields accurate values for the vibrational and rotational constants for the X 2Σ+g state of Li+2 and an improved value of the ionization potential of Li2.

Notes: The combined results of optical radio frequency double resonance and of hyperfine structure measurements in the spectral range around 593 nm show that the variations of hfs splittings within a vibronic band are due to the irregular behavior of the Landé factors in the excited state, rather than caused by variations of the hfs coupling constant OI. The observations can be explained by spin–orbit coupling and vibronic coupling.

Notes: With two cw single mode dye lasers selective two-step excitation of Rydberg levels of the Li2 molecule is achieved which is detected by optical double resonance polarization spectroscopy. The Doppler-free DR signals allow accurate measurements of rotational perturbations which cause level shifts and intensity anomalies due to interference phenomena. The experimental results are discussed and molecular constants for the deperturbed Rydberg states are given, which, together with the coupling matrix elements allow the accurate reproduction of the measured spectra.

Notes: Based on resonant two-photon ionization of 21Li3 with cw lasers and mass-selective detection of 21Li3+ ions by a quadrupole mass spectrometer, isotope-selective rotationally resolved spectra of vibronic bands in the electronic A 2E″←X 2E′ system have been recorded. The complex but completely resolved spectra could be analyzed using optical–optical double resonance techniques in combination with accurate ab initio calculations which provide potential energy surfaces and rovibronic term values for both electronic states. A detailed comparison between experimental and theoretical results for the (vs′=0, vb′=0, va′=0)←(vs″=0, vb″=0, va″=0) band demonstrates excellent agreement. The coupling between pseudorotation and rotational motion is shown to produce complex level patterns which, however, can be accurately represented by an effective pseudo/rotation Hamiltonian in terms of rotational and coupling constants that directly provide structural information. For both electronic states the nuclear dynamics is adequately described as a motion on a single adiabatic potential surface with a geometric phase π for closed loops around the conical intersection at D3h geometries. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using the method of Doppler-free double resonance polarization spectroscopy transitions from selectively pumped levels (v', J') of the D1Σ+u state down to levels (v‘, J‘) of the X 1Σ+g state with v‘= 0–140 have been measured with high accuracy. A long range analysis, based on 21 outer turning points of the IPA potential with v‘=110-130 and on calculated exchange energies and second order van der Waals coefficients Cn with n=6, 8, 10, and 12 leads to a dissociation energy De =3649.5±0.8 cm−1 (0.452 49 eV). The influence of the third order C11 contribution and the hyperfine structure on the correct value of De are briefly discussed.
